How to Make Charcoal in Minecraft (Java and Bedrock)

Smelt any log or stripped log in a furnace with starter fuel to make charcoal. This guide covers the exact steps, fuel planning, burn capacity, uses, troubleshooting and Bedrock efficiency caveats.

To make charcoal, smelt any wooden log or stripped log in a furnace with a fuel item in the separate fuel slot. After the smelt completes, take the charcoal from the output slot and use it as renewable fuel or for several fire and lighting recipes.

What you need before you start

Charcoal is the practical substitute when you have wood but have not found underground coal. The recipe does not require a special workstation: the entire process uses a furnace.

  • One or more logs: Any wooden log works. Stripped-log variants are accepted as well.
  • A furnace: Craft and place one where you can access its three slots.
  • Starter fuel: Put a valid furnace fuel in the bottom slot. Planks, sticks and wooden tools are convenient early-game choices, along with any other fuel item you already have.
  • An output space: Leave room in your inventory for the charcoal, or it will remain in the furnace until collected.

You do not need coal to begin. A small amount of wood can start the first cycle, after which the charcoal you produce can keep later cycles running.

Step-by-step: make charcoal in a furnace

1. Collect a wooden log

Break a tree trunk and pick up at least one log. The log does not have to be converted into planks first. If you already have a stripped log, that works too; stripping the bark does not prevent it from being smelted.

For a larger supply, collect several logs before returning to the furnace. Charcoal is made one input item at a time, so a larger batch saves repeated trips between the forest and your base.

2. Craft and place a furnace

Use the standard furnace recipe in your crafting interface, then place the furnace on a reachable solid block. Open it to see the input, fuel and output positions.

The furnace has separate slots for the material being processed and the fuel that powers the operation. A log in the wrong slot will not begin smelting, even if a fuel item is present elsewhere in your inventory.

3. Put the log in the top input slot

Move the wooden log or stripped log into the furnace’s upper slot. This is the item that will be transformed into charcoal.

4. Add fuel to the bottom slot

Place planks, sticks, a wooden tool or another valid furnace fuel in the lower slot. The furnace consumes fuel from this dedicated slot; simply carrying fuel in your inventory is not enough.

For the first cycle, use a small amount of wood fuel rather than converting every log into planks. The goal is only to power the initial smelt. Once charcoal appears, it can serve as the fuel for subsequent log batches.

5. Wait for the smelt to finish

The Minecraft beginner tutorial states that each item takes 10 seconds to smelt. The furnace’s progress indicator shows when the current operation is complete. Do not remove the input prematurely if you want the cycle to finish.

6. Collect the charcoal

When the output slot contains charcoal, move it to your inventory. The furnace can then process another log if you leave additional input and fuel available.

How the furnace process works

Charcoal production follows the normal furnace workflow: an item goes in the top slot, fuel goes in the bottom slot, and the finished product appears in the output slot. If either input is missing, the progress bar stops.

Each log produces charcoal as its smelted result. The source material is not limited to one tree species, and stripped logs are valid inputs, so you can use whichever wood is most accessible in your world.

The cited Minecraft Wiki charcoal entry gives charcoal a burn time of 80 seconds and says one charcoal can smelt up to eight items. That makes a completed piece substantially more useful than the small starter fuel used to produce it, especially when you are processing a batch of logs, food or other furnace materials.

Choosing starter fuel when you have no coal

Planks

Planks are usually the simplest first fuel because they are made from the same logs you gathered. Convert only enough wood to power the initial cycle, then switch to charcoal when it is available.

Sticks

Sticks can also start the furnace if you have them in your inventory. They are useful when you want to reserve planks for building, but organize the furnace load so the fuel you add is sufficient for the intended smelt.

Wooden tools

Damaged or obsolete wooden tools can be placed in the fuel slot instead of being discarded. This is a convenient way to recover some value from equipment you no longer need.

Other valid furnace fuels

Any item the furnace accepts as fuel can power the first cycle. The important distinction is that the material being smelted belongs in the top slot while fuel belongs in the bottom slot.

Use fuel efficiently

Match the amount of fuel to the size of the batch whenever possible. The Minecraft Wiki smelting tutorial recommends avoiding fuel that burns longer than the work you have queued, because unused burn time is wasted when the furnace has no input left.

For a small emergency batch, load only the fuel needed for the logs currently in the input queue. For a long session, prepare several logs and enough fuel to keep the furnace active while you work nearby. Once you have charcoal, its published 80-second burn time and capacity of up to eight smelted items make it suitable for organized batches.

Keep the furnace supplied rather than repeatedly starting and stopping it. Place the next logs in the input slot before the current fuel runs out, and collect the output when you return. This reduces idle time without changing the recipe.

What charcoal is used for

Charcoal is more than a temporary substitute for coal. The official Minecraft guidance lists these uses:

  • Furnace fuel: Burn charcoal to smelt or cook other items.
  • Torches: Use it in torch crafting for early lighting and mine illumination.
  • Campfires: Include it in campfire recipes.
  • Fire charges: Use it as one of the ingredients for fire charges.
  • Soul torches: Use it in soul-torch crafting.

Because trees can be replanted, charcoal gives a renewable early-game fuel source. It is especially useful before you establish a reliable coal supply or when you want to reserve mined coal for another purpose.

Charcoal compared with coal and other wood fuels

The choice between charcoal, mined coal and basic wood fuel depends on what is available and which edition you play. The cited material establishes charcoal’s burn figure, but it does not provide matching burn capacities for coal, planks or sticks, so those cells are intentionally marked as not stated rather than estimated.

Option Availability Burn capacity per item Setup effort Important qualification
Charcoal Renewable from logs or stripped logs 80 seconds; up to 8 smelted items Furnace plus a starter fuel item Made from wood, so it is available wherever trees are available
Coal Mined resource Not stated in the cited material Requires finding and mining coal, then using a furnace normally Useful when you already have a supply, but not required for charcoal production
Planks Crafted from logs Not stated in the cited material No extra processing beyond crafting planks Best treated as starter fuel when beginning a charcoal cycle
Sticks or wooden tools Crafted or obtained from wooden equipment Not stated in the cited material Use what is already in your inventory Useful for the first smelt or for consuming unwanted wooden items
Bedrock slab options Edition-specific wood-fuel alternative Exact value not stated here Depends on the blocks and crafting resources available The beginner tutorial notes that slabs in Bedrock can be more efficient than converting wood into charcoal

Java and Bedrock Edition considerations

The core recipe is the same in Java and Bedrock: smelt a log or stripped log in a furnace with fuel. The difference is fuel efficiency, not the charcoal input itself.

In particular, the beginner tutorial notes that Bedrock slabs can be more efficient than turning wood into charcoal. Therefore, charcoal should not be described as the universally most efficient wood-based fuel in every edition. If your goal is the lowest possible fuel cost rather than a renewable supply, compare the options available in your edition and use the one that fits your batch size.

When an update changes furnace behavior or fuel values, check the instructions for your exact edition and version. The 10-second-per-item figure and the 80-second charcoal burn figure are the published values cited for the current reference pages, not a guarantee that every future mechanic will remain unchanged.

Common problems and fixes

The furnace is not smelting

  • Confirm that a log or stripped log is in the top input slot.
  • Confirm that fuel is in the bottom slot, not merely in your inventory.
  • Check that the item you placed as fuel is accepted by the furnace.
  • Make sure the output slot is not blocking the operation with a different item type or a full stack.

The log disappeared but no charcoal is visible

Look at the output slot and your inventory. If the furnace finished while you were away, charcoal may already be waiting in the output slot. Collect it before adding more items if the slot is full.

You used a stripped log and it did not work

Stripped logs are accepted inputs. Recheck the slot placement and fuel rather than converting the stripped log back into another wood form.

You ran out of fuel halfway through

Add another valid fuel item to the bottom slot. The unfinished operation can continue once the furnace has fuel again. For future batches, count the logs you intend to process and load fuel that matches that workload instead of relying on a single small item.

You cannot find coal at all

Coal is optional for this process. Gather a log, use planks, sticks, a wooden tool or another valid starter fuel, and complete one charcoal cycle. Use the resulting charcoal to expand production.

A practical early-game workflow

For one immediate torch or cooking session

  1. Collect a log.
  2. Place a furnace.
  3. Put the log in the top slot.
  4. Add a few planks or sticks in the bottom slot.
  5. Wait for the 10-second smelt to finish.
  6. Collect the charcoal and use it for your next furnace job or lighting recipe.

For a sustained supply

  1. Gather a larger batch of logs before starting.
  2. Place several furnaces if you need parallel processing and have the materials to do so.
  3. Use a small starter-fuel load to create the first charcoal.
  4. Feed the resulting charcoal back into the furnaces with additional logs.
  5. Keep fuel and logs organized in separate inventory slots so you can reload quickly.
  6. Stop adding fuel when no further input is queued, preventing burn time from being spent on an empty furnace.

Bottom line

When coal is unavailable, charcoal is straightforward: put any log or stripped log in a furnace, place starter fuel beneath it, wait for the smelt, and collect the result. The finished charcoal supplies renewable fuel and supports torches, campfires, fire charges and soul torches. Plan batches around the furnace’s burn time, and remember that Bedrock-specific fuel alternatives can sometimes be more efficient than converting wood into charcoal.
