Use mysqlcheck, not mysqladmin, to check or repair a MySQL table. First identify the table’s storage engine, take a logical backup, run a check, and repair only engines that support it. REPAIR TABLE and mysqlcheck --repair apply to MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV; InnoDB requires a rebuild or dump-and-reload approach instead.

mysqladmin and mysqlcheck do different jobs
The command names are easy to confuse, but they are not interchangeable:

Oracle describes mysqlcheck as the client that “checks, repairs, optimizes, or analyzes tables.” It describes mysqladmin as a client for administrative operations. Therefore, mysqladmin repair is not a valid substitute for table repair. You can use mysqladmin before and during maintenance to confirm that the server is reachable and to see active work, but the table operation itself belongs to mysqlcheck or SQL statements such as CHECK TABLE and REPAIR TABLE.
Before touching a damaged table
Confirm the server and table engine
Connect to the same server instance that owns the table and verify the client/server versions used by your operation. If the engine is not known, inspect the definition:

SHOW CREATE TABLE table_name;The engine shown in the definition determines whether a repair command is appropriate. Do not assume that every table in a database uses the same engine.
Back up the table first
Repair can cause data loss in some circumstances, including cases involving file-system errors. Oracle’s guidance is to make a backup before a table-repair operation. A practical logical backup of one table is:
mysqldump db_name table_name > table.sqlKeep the dump somewhere separate from the live data. In production operations, test that the dump can be restored; a file that was created successfully is not proof that a recovery procedure works.
Plan for locks and duration
Table maintenance can lock tables and block applications that need them. A single-table check is usually easier to schedule than a database-wide operation. Checking or repairing every table can take considerable time, so coordinate the work with application owners and monitor connections while it runs.

Step-by-step: check one table with mysqlcheck
- Check server availability. Use
mysqladmin pingwith the account and connection options you normally use. A successful response confirms that the server is accepting connections; it does not check table integrity. - Run the default table check. The default operation of
mysqlcheckis--check:
mysqlcheck -u USER -p DATABASE TABLEReplace USER, DATABASE, and TABLE with the actual account, schema, and table. The -p option prompts for the password rather than putting it in the shell command.
- Read the result before deciding to repair. The underlying
CHECK TABLEreport can containstatus,error,info,note, orwarningrows. When no fault is found, the final status normally reportsOK. - Record the output. Save the command output with the date, database, table, engine, and server instance. It gives you a baseline for a later check and helps distinguish a real change from a transient connection problem.
Checking more than one table
Use a scope that matches the incident rather than immediately scanning every database:

A broad check increases lock exposure and runtime. Start with the table named in the error, then widen the scope if the symptoms or check results justify it.
Repairing MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV tables
REPAIR TABLE is limited to the MyISAM, ARCHIVE, and CSV storage engines. After a backup and a check that indicates corruption, repair one table with:

mysqlcheck --repair --all-databasesUse the database-wide forms only after considering lock duration, workload, and the possibility that unrelated tables do not need intervention.
Choosing repair depth
--quick: the fastest repair path. It attempts to repair only the index tree. Use it when speed matters and the reported problem appears limited to indexes, while recognizing that it is not a comprehensive repair.--extended: a more thorough operation that can take a long time. During repair it may produce garbage rows, so preserve the backup and validate the resulting table before returning it to normal service.--auto-repair: checks first and then repairs tables found to be corrupted. This is useful for a planned batch, but it can still lock tables and alter data without a separate approval step; use it only when that behavior is acceptable.
Do not describe the “100% consistent” wording associated with extended checking as a measured success rate. It is a statement about that check mode’s consistency guarantee, not a real-world probability that a repair will recover every row.
What to do with InnoDB tables
InnoDB can be checked, but REPAIR TABLE does not repair InnoDB. Running mysqlcheck --repair against an InnoDB table is therefore the wrong recovery path.
Rebuild the table after confirming the engine
A documented rebuild is:
ALTER TABLE table_name ENGINE = InnoDB;Use this only after confirming the table engine and planning for the operation’s lock and resource impact. The rebuild creates a new InnoDB representation and can take substantial time on a large table.

Dump and reload for version-transition problems
If the issue is associated with an incompatible server-version upgrade or downgrade, use the backup as the recovery artifact: dump the affected data, create or retain the correct table definition on the target server, and reload it. Validate row counts and application queries after the reload before discarding the original backup.
The engine distinction is decisive: a successful MyISAM repair command says nothing about an InnoDB table, and an InnoDB error should not be “fixed” by repeatedly running REPAIR TABLE.

mysqladmin cannot inspect or repair table structures, but its administrative commands help you decide when to run maintenance and whether the server is still responsive.

Run these commands against the same host, port, and credentials as mysqlcheck. A healthy ping or status response does not imply that a particular table is healthy.
Interpreting common outcomes
The check ends with OK
No fault was reported by that check. Keep the output as a baseline and investigate application-level errors, disk space, permissions, or connection issues separately rather than repairing a table that passed.
The report contains an error or warning
Read the complete report and confirm the engine from SHOW CREATE TABLE. For MyISAM, ARCHIVE, or CSV, take or verify the backup and choose an appropriate repair depth. For InnoDB, switch to a rebuild or dump-and-reload plan.
The command cannot connect
Use mysqladmin ping to distinguish an unavailable server from a table problem. Then verify the host, port, account privileges, password prompt, and whether the client is pointed at the intended instance. Do not interpret a connection failure as evidence of table corruption.
The repair is taking too long
Check mysqladmin processlist and mysqladmin status for active threads and workload. A thorough --extended repair or a database-wide operation can be lengthy by design. If the application cannot tolerate the lock, stop and reschedule rather than interrupting blindly; retain the pre-repair dump and document the point at which the operation was stopped.
The table still fails after repair
Do not loop indefinitely on the same command. Preserve the original dump and output, re-check the engine and server version, and consider restoring into a clean table or using the InnoDB rebuild/dump-reload path when applicable. Continued file-system errors must be resolved at the storage layer as well as at the SQL layer.
