For each URL, navigate with a suitable readiness condition, save a uniquely named screenshot, record errors, and close resources. Puppeteer’s documented capture method is Page.screenshot(); whether to use a viewport, clip, or full-page capture depends on what you need.
What you need before processing a URL list
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU, memory, storage, and outbound bandwidth for your actual pages and capture settings. No universal minimum size is established; measure your workload before settling on a plan.
- Node.js 22.12 or later. Puppeteer currently documents Chrome for Testing support on Debian/Ubuntu and openSUSE/Fedora, for x64 and arm64. Check the current system requirements against your VPS image and architecture.
- A compatible browser installation. Installing the
puppeteerpackage normally downloads Chrome for Testing. If your package manager blocks install scripts, that download may be skipped. - A URL list and a directory with enough space for the generated files.
An India location may matter when you want compute geographically closer to Indian users or services. AWS lists Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2) as India regions; this confirms availability of those locations, not that AWS is the cheapest or best choice for your workload. Compare providers on geography, resources, storage, bandwidth, current cost, and how you can maintain browser dependencies and sandboxing.

Before running a large batch, verify that Chrome is installed and starts successfully. Puppeteer’s installation guide describes its browser download behavior. If you intentionally manage Chrome separately, ensure its version remains compatible with the Puppeteer version you install.

Install Puppeteer and the Linux browser dependencies
Install on Debian or Ubuntu
On a Debian/Ubuntu server, install Node.js 22.12 or later using a trusted method appropriate to your OS image. Then create a project and install Puppeteer:

Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide lists Debian/Ubuntu packages for certificates, fonts, GTK/ATK, NSS, GBM, Pango, X11, and related libraries. Use that guide’s current package list rather than assuming every image has the same dependencies: Puppeteer troubleshooting. For an unresolved-library diagnosis, the guide recommends checking Chrome with ldd chrome | grep not (substitute the actual browser executable path).
Keep Chrome’s sandbox enabled. The troubleshooting guide says running without a sandbox is strongly discouraged. Do not make --no-sandbox a routine fix for launch failures, especially on a server that visits arbitrary public URLs; correct the host configuration and dependencies instead.
Confirm the browser can launch
After installation, run a small capture before submitting a long list. The script below launches Puppeteer’s managed browser, visits one page, saves a screenshot, and closes the browser. A launch error at this stage is easier to diagnose than one discovered partway through a batch.

Viewport, full page, or a specific area
page.screenshot() captures the page. Its fullPage option defaults to false; set it to true when the whole document is needed. A normal viewport or a clip is better when every output should have fixed dimensions. For one particular element, Puppeteer also provides ElementHandle.screenshot(). See the screenshot API options for path, image type, encoding, clip, and other details.

Wait for the page you actually need
The official screenshot example navigates with waitUntil: 'networkidle2', but that condition is not a universal guarantee that a page is visually complete. Sites with persistent network activity, lazy-loaded images, delayed fonts, or content inserted by scripts may need a different readiness condition. You can wait for a meaningful selector after navigation, or use a deliberate site-specific delay when there is no reliable selector. Choose and test the condition against the sites in your list.
Run a bounded bulk screenshot script
This example reads one URL per line from urls.txt, saves a separate PNG for every input line, records success or failure in results.jsonl, and limits concurrent browser pages. It uses one browser process for the batch and closes each page after its job. The concurrency value is an initial implementation choice, not a Puppeteer recommendation: start conservatively and raise it only after measuring the actual workload on your VPS.

});The job timer in this compact example rejects a job but does not cancel an in-progress browser operation; the page is then closed in the error path. For stricter job cancellation or graceful shutdown, manage active pages explicitly and stop accepting new work when a timeout or termination signal occurs. The navigation timeout limits navigation, while the job timeout gives the overall operation a separate bound.

node bulk-shots.cjsFiles are named with both the input index and a hash of the URL, so repeated URLs still produce separate outputs and ordinary URL characters cannot create unsafe filenames. The JSON Lines log lets you identify which inputs failed without losing the rest of the batch. Treat the list as untrusted input: only process destinations you are permitted to access, and consider network-level controls if this service will accept URLs from other users.
Scale safely and estimate operating cost
Measure before increasing concurrency
There is no source-established safe concurrency value, minimum VPS size, or screenshots-per-hour figure for this workload. Run a representative sample at low concurrency, then increase the number of simultaneous pages in small steps while observing CPU, memory, disk use, navigation failures, and elapsed time. Real pages vary substantially in scripts, image weight, and responsiveness; a result from one URL set is not a general throughput promise.
Plan for time, storage, and network use
- Use per-navigation and per-job time limits so one slow page does not hold a worker indefinitely.
- Estimate disk space from your own output format, viewport or full-page choice, and number of URLs. Remove or archive files according to your retention needs.
- Account for outbound bandwidth and any provider charges that apply to your server. Current provider pricing and a best-value VPS plan are not established here.
- Keep browser and Puppeteer versions controlled; recheck dependencies when you change the base OS image or architecture.
- Retry selectively. Record the URL, attempt, and error; avoid immediately retrying every failure at high concurrency, which can intensify load on your server or the destination site.
Troubleshoot common failures
Chrome executable missing or browser download skipped
Cause: installation scripts were disabled or the browser binary was not downloaded. Fix: check the Puppeteer installation guide and install a compatible browser explicitly if managing it yourself; confirm the executable exists before launching the batch.
Chrome exits with missing shared-library errors
Cause: the VPS image lacks one or more browser dependencies. Fix: install the Debian/Ubuntu dependencies listed in Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide, then inspect unresolved libraries with ldd chrome | grep not using the real Chrome path.

Browser launch fails around sandboxing
Cause: host sandbox configuration or permissions are unsuitable. Fix: configure the host so Chrome’s sandbox can run and consult the troubleshooting guidance; do not treat --no-sandbox as the standard remedy.
Navigation times out or the screenshot misses content
Cause: the site remains active after navigation, content appears asynchronously, or the chosen readiness condition does not match the page. Fix: test a suitable waitUntil setting, wait for the required selector or asset, and tune the timeout to the sites in your workload.
Batch is slow or the VPS runs out of memory
Cause: too many heavy pages are open at once, or full-page captures and site content demand more resources than the server provides. Fix: lower concurrency, test viewport capture if a full document is unnecessary, and measure resource use before resizing the server or raising parallelism.

Cause: filenames are derived from a non-unique part of the URL or a fixed output name. Fix: include a per-input index or unique identifier in every path, as the example does.

Can the same script save JPEG or WebP instead of PNG?
Yes. Change the output filename extension and the screenshot option’s type to 'jpeg' or 'webp' where supported by the installed browser; consult the screenshot API documentation for current options.
Does a Mumbai or Hyderabad VPS guarantee faster screenshots?
No. Region names establish where compute is located, not a specific latency or capture-speed result. Measure from your intended server location against your target sites.
Can I capture only one page element?
Yes. Puppeteer supports ElementHandle.screenshot() for capturing a particular element.
