Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can often make an older Windows PC feel faster without opening the case, but the reliable method is diagnosis rather than a single “speed-up” switch. First identify whether the slowdown comes from a busy processor, exhausted memory, a saturated disk, a crowded system drive, too many startup programs, malware, or hardware that has reached its practical limit. Then change one cause at a time and check the result.
This sequence uses Windows’ built-in tools: Task Manager, Storage settings, Storage Sense, Disk Cleanup, Startup controls, Windows Security and Windows Update. It can improve boot time and everyday responsiveness, but it cannot turn aging hardware into a new computer. Microsoft cautions that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvement from these steps.

1. Observe the slowdown before changing anything
Start with evidence. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, select More details. The Processes tab shows which apps and background processes are using CPU, memory, disk and network resources; Performance shows whether a resource remains busy over time. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance is available in its PC performance tips.
Watch the values while reproducing the problem: open the programs that feel slow, start a browser session or wait through a reboot. A brief spike is normal. Sustained high use is more useful evidence. Close only applications you recognize and are not using; do not terminate an unfamiliar process simply because it appears near the top of the list.

| What you observe | Where to confirm it | First response | Risk or trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU stays near the top while one known app is active | Task Manager, Processes | Save work, close the app or reduce its workload; check for an update if it is repeatedly misbehaving | Closing an app can lose unsaved work |
| Memory remains nearly full and Windows starts paging | Task Manager, Processes and Performance | Close unused apps and browser tabs; remove unnecessary programs that launch at sign-in | Closing a tab or app ends that session |
| Disk activity remains high during ordinary use | Task Manager, Processes and Performance | Identify the recognized process, then check free space, updates and malware | Stopping a needed process can interrupt work |
| Startup takes much longer than it used to | Task Manager, Startup apps | Disable nonessential, recognized startup entries and restart | An app may no longer preload features such as sync or notifications |
Task Manager’s Startup apps page includes an impact label. Use it to prioritize programs you do not need immediately after sign-in, not as a reason to disable everything. If the problem is intermittent, note what was running when it occurred; that observation prevents random changes that are difficult to undo.
2. Check free space on the Windows system drive
Low disk space can reduce system performance. In Windows 10 or Windows 11, open Settings > System > Storage and inspect the system drive, usually C:. Windows breaks usage into categories such as installed apps, temporary files, documents and other files. Microsoft’s free-space guidance explains the same workflow for both versions.
Open the categories and read the filenames or descriptions before deleting anything. Remove only data you understand. Large videos, installers, old project folders and duplicate personal files often account for more space than Windows itself. If personal files are consuming the drive, move them to an external drive or another storage location and confirm that the copies open before deleting the originals. External storage is a way to create room; it does not by itself make the computer faster.
Use Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup deliberately
Storage settings may offer Cleanup recommendations. Review each recommendation, its size and its contents, then select only items you no longer need. You can also search the Start menu for Disk Cleanup, choose the Windows drive and inspect the available categories. A cleanup tool is not a substitute for reading what it will remove.
Be especially careful with Previous Windows installation(s). Deleting that category removes the ability to roll back to the previous Windows installation. Keep it if you recently upgraded and may still need that recovery option; remove it only when that trade-off is acceptable.

Configure Storage Sense instead of assuming it handles everything
Storage Sense works on the Windows system drive, normally C:. Its default behavior is to run when disk space is low and can remove temporary files and older items in the Recycle Bin. It does not automatically manage your Downloads folder or cloud content unless you select those settings. Microsoft documents the controls in Manage drive space with Storage Sense.
Open Settings > System > Storage > Storage Sense (use the Settings search box if your version labels the page differently). Choose whether Storage Sense should run automatically, then review the temporary-file, Recycle Bin, Downloads and cloud-file options individually. Do not enable removal of Downloads or cloud content until you understand which files will be affected and where another copy is stored.
3. Reduce startup work without disabling essential software
Programs that launch at sign-in lengthen startup and continue consuming memory or CPU afterward. You can manage them in Settings > Apps > Startup, or in Task Manager > Startup apps. Microsoft’s Startup applications instructions cover both Windows 10 and Windows 11.
- Open the Startup page and sort or scan the list for entries marked with high impact.
- For each candidate, identify the publisher and the app name. Disable only software you recognize and do not need immediately after sign-in.
- Leave security software, hardware utilities, accessibility tools and work-critical synchronization enabled unless you know the consequences of disabling them.
- Restart Windows and compare the time to a usable desktop and the responsiveness of your normal apps.
Disabling an entry does not uninstall the program. You can return to the same page and enable it again if a feature or notification you rely on disappears. A startup change is therefore safer than deleting an application, provided you keep track of what you changed.
4. Remove unused applications and background clutter
Uninstall programs you no longer use through Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Settings > Apps > Apps & features in Windows 10. Search for the program, check its publisher and select Uninstall. If you are unsure what an entry does, leave it in place and research its name through the publisher’s documentation rather than removing it at random.

Close unused applications and browser tabs when memory is tight. Some browsers keep background processes by design, so closing a visible window may not end every process; use the browser’s own settings if you need to control background activity. Restart Windows after uninstalling several programs or after a long session in which performance has degraded. A restart clears temporary states, but it will not fix a full drive, malware or a failing component.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Avoid “debloating” scripts and blanket instructions to disable Windows services. Services can provide updates, printing, networking, backups, accessibility or security. The safer approach is to change a named, recognized application and verify the result before making another change.
5. Test visual effects when the interface feels sluggish
Windows visual effects consume some system resources. Search the Start menu for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and open the matching Control Panel dialog. On the Visual Effects tab, select Adjust for best performance, then apply the change. You can instead keep selected effects, such as smooth fonts, if the full reduction makes the desktop unpleasant to use.
This setting changes presentation, not the underlying capability of the PC. Fewer animations, shadows and transparency effects can make menus feel more immediate on a resource-constrained system, but Windows will look plainer. If the change does not help, restore the previous selection; there is no reason to sacrifice appearance when visual effects were not the bottleneck.
6. Try Best performance power mode only when the trade-off is acceptable
On systems that expose power modes, open Settings and search for power mode, or navigate to the power and battery page. Select Best performance while testing responsiveness, then compare the result with the balanced option. Microsoft warns that a performance-focused mode can use more electricity, drain a laptop battery faster and make the device warmer.

Use it mainly when the computer is plugged in or when short-term responsiveness matters more than battery life. On a laptop that already runs hot, the extra heat can cause the processor to reduce its speed, defeating the purpose. If the difference is small, the balanced mode is the better everyday choice.
7. Scan for malware and install pending Windows updates
Malware can consume CPU and disk resources, so run a scan with Windows Security. Open Start and search for Windows Security, choose Virus & threat protection, and start a Quick scan. If the symptoms persist or the quick scan finds something, follow Windows Security’s recommended cleanup and scan options.
Check Settings > Windows Update for pending updates and restart when Windows requests it. Menu names can differ slightly between Windows 10 and Windows 11; the Settings search field can locate both Windows Update and Windows Security. Updates may temporarily increase disk or CPU use while they install, so judge performance after the installation and restart have completed.

Microsoft’s PC Health Check instructions describe an optional diagnostic app. It can report storage use and startup time and check whether the computer meets Windows 11 eligibility requirements. Those reports can help you decide whether a software cleanup is worthwhile or whether the machine is approaching its hardware limits.

Choose the change that matches the symptom
| Change | Main bottleneck addressed | Most noticeable symptom | Potential downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task Manager observation | Unknown CPU, memory or disk demand | Any slowdown, because it identifies the cause | Misidentifying a process can lead to an unsafe closure |
| Free-space cleanup | Nearly full system drive | General sluggishness, update failures or heavy disk activity | Deleting needed files; removing a previous installation eliminates rollback |
| Storage Sense configuration | Accumulating temporary files | Recurring low-space warnings | Downloads or cloud files may be removed if you explicitly enable those rules |
| Startup review | Too much work at sign-in | Slow boot and a busy desktop immediately after login | Delayed sync, notifications or hardware utilities |
| Uninstall unused apps | Unneeded software and background components | Persistent memory or disk use | Removing a program you still need |
| Visual-effects reduction | Limited graphics or system resources used by presentation | Slow menus, animations and window movement | Less visual polish |
| Best performance power mode | Conservative power-management settings | Responsiveness while plugged in | Higher power use, shorter battery life and more heat |
| Windows Security scan and updates | Malware or outdated system components | Unexpected CPU or disk activity and recurring instability | Scans and updates can temporarily use resources and require a restart |
Troubleshoot in an order that limits risk
- Observe: use Task Manager while the slowdown is happening and write down the recognized process or resource that stays busy.
- Check storage: inspect Settings > System > Storage, then review Cleanup recommendations, Disk Cleanup and Storage Sense settings.
- Trim startup: disable only nonessential entries you recognize, restart and test again.
- Reduce background load: uninstall software you no longer use, close unused apps and tabs, and avoid changing unfamiliar services.
- Test optional settings: try reduced visual effects or Best performance power mode one at a time, keeping the trade-offs in mind.
- Scan and update: run Windows Security and complete Windows Update, then restart.
- Reassess: if the same resource remains saturated, use PC Health Check for additional context and consider that the hardware itself may be the limiting factor.
Changing one category at a time makes cause and effect visible. If a change causes a problem, reverse that specific setting instead of making several more changes that obscure the recovery path.
Know what a tune-up cannot fix
Software housekeeping cannot add processing cores, memory capacity or faster storage. If Task Manager shows that a required application consistently consumes all available CPU or memory, or the disk remains busy despite adequate free space and clean startup items, the limitation may be physical. Microsoft states: “Older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps. In those cases, upgrading the device may be the best long-term solution.”
That conclusion is useful even when you are avoiding an upgrade: diagnosis tells you which fixes are worth keeping and prevents risky registry edits, service disabling or repeated cleanup from consuming your time.

Performance is separate from Windows support
Microsoft says support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. That end includes free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance and security fixes. A computer can feel faster after cleanup while still running an operating system that no longer receives normal Windows 10 support. Treat the performance steps as maintenance, not as a way to restore security coverage. Check Windows 11 eligibility with PC Health Check and review Microsoft’s current support information before deciding how to keep the device in service.
