If your Galaxy is sitting on “Downloading…Do not turn off target” after a flash, first decide whether the firmware operation is still actively running. If the progress has finished, failed, or stopped and the phone is simply stuck, hold Volume Down and Power/Side together for about seven seconds, until it restarts. Samsung’s support guidance gives this as the general way out of Download/Odin Mode.
Do not interrupt an active firmware write just because the screen contains a warning. If the phone returns to Download Mode after restarting, remove its case and check for a pressed or faulty button. For a failed update that Smart Switch recognizes, use MORE → Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization. Repeated failure, an unknown firmware state, or a suspected hardware fault is a reason to stop experimenting and arrange Samsung service.

Confirm that it is really Download Mode
Samsung uses Download Mode, also called Odin Mode, for diagnostics and software installation. The screen commonly says “Downloading…Do not turn off target.” That message is not the same as Android Recovery, a boot loop at the Samsung logo, or a normal update screen with a moving progress indicator.

Accidentally entering Download Mode does not by itself prove that a flash is taking place. Samsung’s support explanations distinguish an idle device that entered the mode from a technician actively using it to install software. The warning not to turn off the phone is especially important during an active installation. If you started a flash and can still see meaningful progress, leave the cable connected and follow the flashing tool’s instructions rather than forcing a restart.

The exact Galaxy model, region or carrier edition, bootloader version, firmware package, and outcome of the flash are often decisive. Because those details are not known here, the steps below deliberately use Samsung’s general recovery path instead of prescribing another firmware package or a model-specific key combination.
Use the safe first step when the flash is finished or stopped
Force-restart the phone once
- Press and hold Volume Down and the Power or Side button at the same time.
- Keep both buttons held for approximately seven seconds. Samsung Electronics Service Korea specifies at least seven seconds; Samsung US and Samsung Australia describe the same general combination and duration.
- Release the buttons when the device restarts. Give it time to attempt a normal boot before pressing any other keys.
Button names and layouts vary by Galaxy design. On a model that labels its power key “Side,” use that key. If your model uses a different arrangement, check its model-specific Samsung manual rather than guessing at a key sequence. This restart only exits the mode; it does not reinstall firmware or repair a failed flash.
When not to force a restart
Do not use the restart sequence to interrupt a clearly active firmware write. A progress indicator that is advancing, a flashing utility that reports an operation in progress, or instructions from an authorized technician are reasons to wait. If the process has failed, stopped for a long time, or left the phone on the Downloading screen with no active operation, the seven-second restart is the appropriate general first action.

Remove anything pressing the keys
Power the phone down if possible, remove its case, and repeat the restart with the handset bare. Samsung specifically identifies contact with the physical buttons, including a poorly fitted case, as a cause of Download Mode returning. Check that Volume Down and the Power/Side key move normally and are not wedged by grit, adhesive, or a damaged case.

Separate a button fault from a software failure
If the device repeatedly enters Download Mode even without a case, a stuck or damaged button is possible. Do not keep cycling the same key combination for hours: repeated attempts cannot correct a physically defective switch. Note which key feels abnormal and arrange service inspection.
Record the state before changing anything else
- Write down the exact model number shown on the label, SIM tray, box, or any Samsung screen you can still reach.
- Record the country or carrier variant and the firmware file or tool used, if known.
- Note whether the flash reported success, failure, an error code, or no completion message.
- Photograph the Download Mode screen and any error text for support.
These details help Samsung determine whether the issue is a failed update, incompatible software, a bootloader mismatch, or a hardware problem. They also prevent an advisor from recommending firmware for the wrong regional variant.
Choose the next step based on what happens after the restart

Use Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery after a failed update
Samsung’s Phone Recovery Guide documents an emergency path for supported update failures. It is most appropriate when an official update did not complete and Smart Switch can identify the device, not as a blanket replacement for model-verified manual flashing.
Open the emergency recovery command
- Disconnect the Galaxy from the computer.
- Restart the Smart Switch computer application.
- Reconnect the phone with a USB data cable compatible with the Galaxy’s connector.
- In Smart Switch, open MORE, then choose Emergency Software Recovery and Initialization.
- Select the device listed for recovery and follow the prompts shown by Smart Switch.
The exact screens can vary by Smart Switch release and operating system. Read each confirmation carefully; Samsung’s guidance does not guarantee preservation of personal data in every emergency-recovery situation.

If Smart Switch does not recognize the phone
- Disconnect and reconnect the cable, then retry the recovery.
- Use a different USB port directly on the computer rather than an unpowered hub.
- Try another known-good cable that supports data, not merely charging. A cable is a connection aid, not a firmware repair.
- Reinstall the Smart Switch device driver using the option provided by Samsung’s recovery documentation, then reconnect the phone.
If recovery repeatedly fails on one computer, Samsung documents entering the emergency recovery code on another computer. Keep that code exactly as displayed; do not substitute a code from a different device or session.
Battery-removal instructions need a model check
Some older Samsung recovery instructions include removing and reinserting the battery. Most current Galaxy phones have sealed batteries, so do not pry open the handset or tell yourself that a removable-battery step applies universally. Only remove a battery when the phone was designed for user removal and Samsung’s instructions for that exact model say to do so.
Understand the risks of another flash
Samsung warns that installing unsupported software through Download Mode can damage the device, may affect warranty coverage, or leave it susceptible to hacking. “Unsupported” includes software intended for another model, region, bootloader level, or carrier variant, even when the file name looks similar.

Do not download a replacement firmware package based only on the phone’s marketing name. Before any manual procedure, a technician would need the exact model identifier, regional or carrier code, bootloader/binary compatibility, and a verified source for the package. Without those facts, another flash can make the failure harder to diagnose.

Arrange Samsung service or an authorized repair assessment when any of these conditions applies:
- The phone returns to Download Mode after the bare-device restart.
- A Power/Side or Volume button feels stuck, loose, or physically damaged.
- Smart Switch cannot recognize the device or emergency recovery fails repeatedly.
- You do not know which firmware was flashed, or the package may belong to another model or region.
- The phone becomes unusually hot, disconnects repeatedly, or shows additional hardware symptoms.
Samsung US advises a walk-in service center or scheduled repair when a Galaxy continues booting into Download Mode. Samsung Electronics Service Korea likewise recommends inspection when the Downloading screen returns after the restart procedure. Give the technician the model, region or carrier, flash tool and file used, completion or error message, and every step already attempted.
Back up any data that is still accessible before service. Do not assume emergency recovery, a factory reset, or a board-level repair will preserve files; the cited Samsung instructions provide no blanket data-preservation guarantee.

Common mistakes to avoid
Confusing an idle screen with an active flash
The phrase “Do not turn off target” is a warning, not a diagnosis. Confirm whether a flashing operation is actually running before interrupting it.
Holding random key combinations
Use the documented Volume Down plus Power/Side sequence for about seven seconds. Randomly adding Volume Up or connecting and disconnecting cables can move the phone into another service screen and make the state less clear.
Leaving a tight case installed
A case pressing a side key can recreate Download Mode immediately after every restart. Remove it before deciding that the software is irreparably damaged.

Repeating unofficial flashes without model data
Every additional attempt can introduce a different firmware mismatch or erase useful diagnostic information. Stop when the model, region, bootloader level, or flash result is uncertain.
Assuming a charging cable is sufficient
Smart Switch recovery requires a reliable data connection. A cable that only charges may not allow the computer to identify the phone; switch to a compatible data cable and another USB port before concluding that recovery is unavailable.
