To make an old Windows laptop faster, first identify what is slowing it down, then try reversible software maintenance before buying parts or resetting Windows. Use Task Manager to check for sustained CPU, memory, or disk pressure; back up important files before recovery; and verify your exact laptop model before purchasing replacement storage, memory, or a battery. If the laptop still has Windows 10, its support status is also part of the decision: Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025.
Start by identifying what is wrong
“Slow” can mean several different things: Windows takes a long time to start, apps open slowly, the laptop freezes, the fan runs often, the battery drains quickly, or the drive is nearly full. Note which symptoms you have and when they occur. That helps distinguish a software or storage problem from a worn battery or a broader reliability issue.

Check resource use in Task Manager
On Windows, open Task Manager and review its Processes, Performance, and Startup apps views. Look for CPU, memory, or disk use that stays high during ordinary work, rather than treating a brief spike as proof of a fault. In the Startup apps view, identify programs that launch automatically and consider disabling only the ones you recognize and do not need at startup.

Microsoft lists limited storage, too many startup apps, outdated software, and hardware that no longer meets modern performance needs among possible causes of a slow Windows PC. A high resource reading can point toward a bottleneck, but it does not by itself establish that a component should be replaced.

Try low-risk maintenance before changing hardware
Make one or a few changes, restart, and check whether the symptom improves. Several causes can contribute to a slowdown, and older hardware may show little improvement from software maintenance alone.
- Install available updates. Check Windows Update for available Windows updates and optional driver updates. The exact options depend on the Windows version and device.
- Run a malware scan. Use Windows Security to scan for malware. If you find a threat, follow the security app’s instructions to address it.
- Remove apps you do not use. Uninstall unused applications rather than keeping programs running or installed without a reason.
- Reduce startup work carefully. In Task Manager’s Startup apps view, disable only apps you recognize and do not need to launch automatically. Avoid disabling an item simply because its name is unfamiliar.
- Clear temporary files. Use Storage Sense, Cleanup recommendations, or Disk Cleanup, as available on your Windows version. Low disk space can reduce system performance, so check free space after cleanup.
- Reassess under normal use. Close apps and browser tabs you are not using, restart the laptop, and see whether the original problem persists.
Check storage before buying an SSD
Microsoft’s general guidance is that devices using slow storage such as an HDD are typically slower to use than devices using SSD or eMMC storage. That makes an SSD a possible upgrade for a laptop that still has a spinning hard drive, but it does not show that every laptop accepts one or guarantee a particular speed improvement.

Before buying an internal SSD for a compatible laptop, find the exact make and model and consult its manufacturer documentation. Confirm that the storage is replaceable and check the required form factor and interface. Do the same model-specific compatibility check before purchasing RAM or a replacement battery; a laptop’s age or appearance is not enough to identify compatible parts.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Adjust Windows settings if battery runtime is the problem
Windows settings can reduce power use, although they cannot repair a physically worn battery. Depending on the device, you can try enabling Energy saver, lowering screen brightness and refresh rate, shortening the display-off and sleep timers, and reviewing which apps use battery in the background. An efficiency-oriented power mode may also be available, depending on the hardware and manufacturer.

- UPGRADE WITH EASE: Using the 870 EVO SSD is as simple as plugging it into the standard 2.5 inch SATA form factor on your desktop PC or laptop; The renewed migration software takes care of the rest
Windows’ Best performance mode is not a default battery-life fix: Microsoft notes that it uses more power and may make the laptop warmer. Choose settings for the problem you are trying to solve—runtime, responsiveness, or heat—rather than assuming one mode improves all three.
Back up files before recovery
If maintenance has not resolved crashes or corrupted behavior, Windows recovery may be an option. First back up important files somewhere you can access independently of the laptop. Recovery choices differ in what they preserve and remove:
Rank #4
- Upgrade your laptop or desktop computer and feel the difference with super-fast OS boot times and application loads
- Exceptional performance offering up to 550MB/s seq. Read and 500MB/s seq. Write speeds
- Superior performance as compared to traditional hard drives (HDD)
- Ultra-low power consumption
- Backwards compatible with SATA II 3GB/sec
- System Restore keeps personal files but reverses system changes.
- Reset this PC removes apps and settings and gives you a choice about personal files.
- Some reinstall options remove everything.
Read the explanation for the specific option shown on your PC before confirming it. Do not assume that every recovery path keeps documents, applications, or settings.
Include Windows support status in the decision
For readers still using Windows 10, Microsoft ended free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC continues to work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. Check whether your particular PC is eligible before treating an operating-system move as an available fix; not every older PC can move to Windows 11.

Decide whether to repair or replace
Age alone does not settle the question. Consider whether the problem has a clear, fixable cause, whether the exact model supports the proposed part, whether it can receive needed updates, and whether the laptop remains reliable and useful after repair.
- A repair may be worth exploring when you have identified a specific bottleneck and the manufacturer documentation confirms a compatible, replaceable part.
- Consider replacement if the laptop cannot receive needed updates, has recurring errors, starts slowly, struggles with everyday tasks, has declining battery runtime or low storage, or continues to show consistently high CPU, memory, or disk use after reasonable maintenance.
- Compare expected usefulness, not age alone. Weigh the likely usefulness of the laptop after a compatible repair against the cost and expected life of that repair. The available guidance does not establish a universal price threshold.
Back up your files before moving to another PC. If the machine has several persistent symptoms rather than one identifiable, compatible repair, replacement may be the more practical path.
