There is no single iPhone setting called “Auto Network Switch.” The right control depends on what you want: use cellular data alongside Wi-Fi, fall back to cellular when Wi-Fi is unavailable, automatically join a saved Wi-Fi network, or join a nearby Personal Hotspot. Apple’s labels and menu paths can vary by iOS version and region; the steps below reflect its iOS 26 guidance.
Use cellular data alongside a connected Wi-Fi network
If you want cellular data to help while your iPhone is connected to a particular Wi-Fi network, use Apple’s Use Connectivity Assist option. Apple describes it as using cellular data in addition to Wi-Fi; it is a per-network control.

- Open Settings and tap Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Info button next to the connected network.
- Turn on Use Connectivity Assist, if the option appears.
Cellular data use may count toward your plan or incur charges, depending on your provider. See Apple’s Wi-Fi settings guide for this option.

You do not need to enable Connectivity Assist for ordinary cellular fallback. Apple says iPhone automatically connects to the carrier’s cellular data network if a Wi-Fi network is not available. That automatic fallback is distinct from using cellular data in addition to an active Wi-Fi connection. See Apple’s iPhone internet connection guide.

Control automatic joining of a saved Wi-Fi network
Auto-Join determines whether iPhone automatically connects to a particular known Wi-Fi network. It does not control when the phone falls back to cellular.
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
- Tap the Info button next to the saved network.
- Turn Auto-Join on or off.
Turning Auto-Join off keeps the saved network available for manual connection. If you forget the network instead, iPhone removes its saved details, including its password. Apple explains both choices in its guides to known Wi-Fi network auto-join and forgetting a Wi-Fi network or preventing automatic joining.

Choose whether to join a nearby Personal Hotspot automatically
For a nearby Personal Hotspot, use the separate Auto-Join Hotspot preference. Open Settings > Wi-Fi > Auto-Join Hotspot and select an available choice, such as Ask to Join or Automatic. This setting concerns hotspot connections, not Wi-Fi-to-cellular switching. See Apple’s Instant Hotspot guide.
