Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe biggest CPU saving is often to stop re-encoding video that is already compatible with your YouTube stream. Try stream copy first; if conversion or filtering makes encoding necessary, use a faster encoder preset, reduce resolution or frame rate only if the picture still meets your needs, and then consider compatible hardware encoding. The right choice depends on your source file, output settings, FFmpeg build and machine—there is no reliable universal CPU-saving percentage.
First check whether FFmpeg needs to encode the video
FFmpeg’s copy mode moves encoded packets without decoding, filtering or encoding them. It can reduce processing work without introducing another generation of video compression. The loop itself does not require a re-encode: -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely.

If the source’s codecs, timestamps and format are suitable for the stream, try this command shape:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL"
This is an example, not a tested command for your particular file. Confirm that the selected streams exist and that the source and destination are compatible. Replace the destination with your YouTube ingest URL and stream key safely; do not publish or share the key. FFmpeg documents stream looping and stream copy in its documentation.

When stream copy will not work
Stream copy cannot apply filters, and it is not supported for every source and destination combination. If you need to scale, add an overlay, change frame rate or color, or otherwise filter the video, FFmpeg must decode and encode that video. If only one stream needs conversion, avoid re-encoding the other: for example, copy video while encoding audio, or copy audio while encoding video. FFmpeg allows codec choices per stream.
If encoding is necessary, make the encoder favor speed
For software encoding with libx264, the preset is a key speed-versus-compression-efficiency control. A faster preset may use less processing time, but can produce a larger file or a different quality result at the same bitrate. The best choice depends on the content and the machine, so compare settings rather than assuming one preset will suit every loop.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-c:a copy
-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMP_URL"
veryfast is an example to test, not a universal recommendation. If CPU remains too high, try a faster preset supported by your installed encoder and inspect the resulting picture. FFmpeg also documents encoder controls such as tune and rc-lookahead; changing them affects encoder behavior, but neither is a guaranteed CPU fix for every prerecorded live loop. Do not add -tune zerolatency automatically: a prerecorded loop may not benefit from a setting aimed at a particular latency goal.

Processing fewer or smaller frames can reduce the work required when video must be encoded. You can lower the output resolution or frame rate, or prepare a correctly sized, pre-encoded source so the live process does not repeatedly scale it. These are workload choices, not a substitute for checking stream health and picture quality. Choose settings that preserve the detail and motion your viewers need.

YouTube’s H.264 ingest guidance gives these recommended bitrates:
| Output mode | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates, not CPU targets. The values are from YouTube Help’s guidance accessed in 2026; the page publication date is not shown. Check the current YouTube live encoder settings and bitrate guidance for the codec, resolution and frame rate you plan to use.

Consider hardware encoding after simplifying the stream
If re-encoding is unavoidable and software encoding still uses too much CPU, a compatible hardware encoder may shift some video work away from the CPU. FFmpeg documents hardware-accelerated encoding paths, but whether one is available depends on your hardware, operating system, drivers, codec and FFmpeg build. No particular GPU or amount of CPU reduction is established here.
- Check which encoders your installed FFmpeg build exposes.
- Confirm that your hardware and drivers support the selected codec and encoder.
- Test the resulting image and YouTube stream health; hardware encoding is not automatically the best-quality or lowest-effort option.
See the hardware-acceleration sections of the FFmpeg documentation for examples. Treat them as platform-dependent examples, not proof that a specific encoder will work on your machine.

Keep YouTube ingest settings valid and test a representative loop
YouTube’s live encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Use the recommendations that match your chosen codec and output mode; a CPU-saving change should not leave the ingest settings unsuitable.
- Use a representative segment. Include motion and audio similar to the actual loop, rather than testing only a static or silent section.
- Change one thing at a time. Start with stream copy if possible. Otherwise test a faster preset, an acceptable lower output mode, or a supported hardware encoder.
- Watch both the encoder and YouTube. Note CPU load, visible artifacts, dropped frames or encoding lag, and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Keep the setting only if the whole stream works. A lower CPU reading is not a win if picture quality, audio, or stream health becomes unacceptable.
YouTube advises creators to test before going live and monitor stream health during the event. It also says it automatically detects the encoder settings chosen and transcodes live streams into multiple viewing formats. That viewer-side transcoding does not remove the need to send a valid, stable feed from FFmpeg.
Troubleshoot common CPU and stream problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
CPU stays high with -c:v copy |
The command may still be encoding another stream, applying a filter, or using a source/destination combination that cannot be copied as configured. | Review the codec options and filters; confirm the mapped streams. Copy each compatible stream and convert only the stream that needs it. |
| Stream copy fails to start or YouTube rejects the feed | The source stream or container may not be compatible with the chosen output or ingest requirements. | Check the input’s codecs and format. If conversion is required, encode only the incompatible stream and use YouTube’s settings for the selected output. |
| Encoding lag persists with software encoding | The chosen preset or output workload may be too demanding for the machine. | Test a faster supported preset, then consider an acceptable reduction in resolution or frame rate. Validate image quality and stream health after each change. |
| A hardware encoder is unavailable | The installed FFmpeg build, drivers, operating system or hardware may not support the encoder you selected. | Check the encoders exposed by your build and verify platform and driver support before revising the command. |
| CPU is lower but viewers see poor quality or stream warnings | The speed change may have altered compression quality or made the output settings unsuitable. | Compare a representative moving segment, review YouTube’s current ingest recommendations and restore the last setting that produced an acceptable stable stream. |
