Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match-stream_loop -1 repeats an input when it reaches the end; it does not restart FFmpeg after an unreadable or corrupted local file makes the process exit. For that, run FFmpeg under an external supervisor or wrapper that logs the failure, waits, checks the media, and relaunches with a known-good fallback when needed. HTTP reconnect options address HTTP input connections—not local files or a failed YouTube publishing connection.
First identify what failed
“File error” can mean several different things, and the right recovery depends on where FFmpeg stopped. Check the final lines of stderr and the process exit status before changing flags.

- Normal end of file: The input was read through to its end. Use input looping if the media is otherwise valid.
- Corrupt packets, but FFmpeg continues: A packet-discard option may let supported formats skip some damaged data.
- File cannot be opened or demuxed: Looping cannot help if FFmpeg cannot read the input. Validate or replace it.
- HTTP source disconnect: HTTP protocol reconnect options may apply, depending on the error and configured retry conditions.
- Output or YouTube publishing failure: This is distinct from a local input error. Diagnose the publishing connection and YouTube stream health separately.
Do not treat every stopped stream as the same kind of disconnection: a loop, packet-discard flag, HTTP retry, and process supervisor address different failure points.

Use -stream_loop -1 for a valid file that reaches EOF
FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as an infinite input loop. It does not promise to recover from every file-open, demux, or decode failure. Put the option before the -i for the input it controls; FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

What FFmpeg error options can—and cannot—do
Try discarding corrupted packets only when that matches the failure
-fflags +discardcorrupt tells FFmpeg to discard corrupted packets for supported inputs. It can help when some damaged packets can be skipped, but it does not repair the container, make an unreadable file open, or guarantee decoding will continue. See the FFmpeg component documentation.

Do not confuse error handling with restarting
-xerror stops and exits on error. -max_error_rate controls an exit-code threshold for decoding failures; crossing that threshold does not terminate processing. Neither option starts a new FFmpeg process. Consult the command-line documentation for the behavior supported by your installed build.
HTTP reconnect flags are for HTTP inputs
FFmpeg documents HTTP-specific reconnect behavior, including reconnect-on-disconnect, reconnect-at-EOF, retrying network errors and selected HTTP status codes, and retry limits. Those options do not retry a local-file read and are not evidence that a YouTube RTMP/RTMPS output will resume after failure. FFmpeg documents protocols separately in its protocol documentation.

Make a local-file stream recover after FFmpeg exits
If a local file error ends the process, recovery requires something outside that process. Use a service manager or wrapper to capture the exit, wait before restarting, check the input, and choose a fallback or stop instead of repeating a permanent failure in a tight loop. The precise configuration depends on your operating system and supervisor.
- Capture the evidence. Record FFmpeg’s exit status and stderr so the next attempt is based on the actual failure rather than a generic “stream disconnected” diagnosis.
- Apply a bounded delay. Wait before relaunching. Avoid rapid, unlimited restart loops that repeatedly open the same broken file.
- Validate the intended media. Check that the file exists and can be read or probed by your chosen validation process before using it again.
- Select a known-good fallback if needed. If the original remains invalid, switch to alternate media or stop and alert an operator. Restarting the same bad file cannot make it readable.
- Keep the recovery policy observable. Log each restart and the reason for selecting a fallback so an unattended stream does not conceal a persistent failure.
This is an operational design, not a built-in FFmpeg guarantee. No universal restart command applies across service managers and operating systems.

Choose the mechanism that matches the failure
| Situation | Suitable mechanism | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Valid file reaches EOF | -stream_loop -1 before -i |
Recovery from an unreadable file or a failed FFmpeg process |
| Some damaged packets in a supported input | -fflags +discardcorrupt |
Repair of the whole file or guaranteed continued decoding |
| FFmpeg exits after a persistent local-file failure | External supervisor plus validation and fallback | Automatic recovery by FFmpeg alone |
| HTTP input disconnects or receives configured retryable errors | HTTP protocol reconnect options | Local-file recovery or RTMP output recovery |
| YouTube stream is unstable | Check encoder settings, upload headroom, stream health, and failover | Correction of a broken input file |
Check YouTube’s stream settings separately
For publishing issues, compare your encoder and connection with YouTube’s encoder settings. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and CBR, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval that does not exceed 4 seconds. Use its current settings table for bitrate values appropriate to your resolution, frame rate, and codec rather than applying one bitrate to every stream.

Its streaming tips recommend about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and testing encoder failover. Those checks help with publishing reliability; they do not validate a local media file. Keep the stream key private: YouTube says it tells the encoder where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. See YouTube stream settings.

Run an unattended FFmpeg job without terminal input checks
For a background invocation, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin or redirecting standard input. This avoids a terminal-related suspension mode; it does not add restart behavior or validate the file.
