Have the agent inspect the page structure, choose and verify the article’s DOM element, then screenshot that element rather than the whole page. In Playwright, that usually means a locator such as article or main—but neither is reliable on every site.
1. Inspect the page before choosing a target
Navigate to the page and wait for the content you need to appear. Then inspect the DOM or an accessibility snapshot to identify the primary content region. Playwright distinguishes these jobs: accessibility snapshots help an agent understand page structure and text; screenshots show visual layout. Try semantic landmarks first, but verify what each one contains. A page may have no <main>, more than one candidate, or an article region that also includes recommendations or other page furniture. Choose a narrower, site-specific selector if needed.

Once you have confirmed the selector, use the locator screenshot API. For example, if inspection shows the article is the page’s only appropriate <main> element:

await page.locator('article').screenshot({ path: 'article.png' });These are alternatives, not selectors to use blindly. Playwright captures the matching element clipped to its position and dimensions, and scrolls the locator into view first. If the element has been detached from the page, the screenshot call errors. 3. Decide whether you need one region or the whole article
An element screenshot captures the element’s bounds. If the target is internally scrollable, content outside its currently visible scroll area may not appear. Check the resulting image rather than assuming that selecting an article means every part of it will be included.
If the goal is the entire scrollable page, use a full-page capture instead of an element-target capture. Playwright’s agent CLI treats these as separate modes: its full-page option cannot be combined with an element target. See the Playwright agent CLI documentation. For a long article inside a scrollable container, determine how the page is structured and whether the desired output is the visible region or all of the content before choosing a capture strategy.

4. Validate the image and handle common failures
After capture, inspect the output for missing text, unwanted page chrome, overlays, or clipping. A screenshot is only as useful as the selector and page state behind it.
- The selector finds nothing: The page may not have that landmark, or content may not have loaded yet. Inspect the DOM or accessibility snapshot and choose a selector that exists on the page.
- The screenshot includes navigation or recommendations: The selected element is too broad. Find a more specific article or content container and inspect it again.
- The screenshot contains only part of a long region: The target may be internally scrollable. Element capture does not automatically expand that container to reveal hidden content.
- The target is detached: A page update may have replaced the element between locating and capturing it. Reinspect the current page and locate the element again.
- The element is obscured or the image looks wrong: Validate the page’s visual state and selector. An overlay or layout change can affect what appears in the capture.
The locator screenshot API supports a stylesheet option, which can help make captures repeatable or hide dynamic elements. Apply it narrowly and only when omitting those elements is appropriate. There is no universal selector or one-size-fits-all recipe for consent dialogs, sticky banners, lazy-loaded content, or site-specific delays; inspect how the particular page behaves.

Does an element screenshot include an entire long article automatically?
Not necessarily. It captures the target’s bounds and may show only the currently visible contents of an internally scrollable element.
