For a custom dropdown rendered in a webpage, have the agent click its trigger, wait until the menu is visible, then capture the page before selecting an option. With Playwright, use page.screenshot() for the surrounding page or locator.screenshot() for a crop of the menu. A native HTML <select> is different: Playwright’s selectOption() sets a value or label; its documentation does not promise a screenshot of the expanded native popup.
Capture a custom dropdown while it is open
A custom dropdown is part of the webpage, so an AI agent can open it like a user and capture the rendered state. Use a stable accessible locator that matches the page’s actual trigger and menu.

- Navigate to the page and locate the trigger by its role and accessible name.
- Click the trigger.
- Wait for the menu or a representative option to become visible.
- Take the screenshot before clicking an option, which may close the menu or change the page.
For example, this JavaScript assumes page is an initialized Playwright Page and that the site exposes a button named “Choose a category” and a visible listbox when opened:

Choose the screenshot scope
Capture the viewport or full page
page.screenshot() captures the current page view. For an open overlay, a viewport screenshot is often the clearest record because it shows the menu in the state currently on screen. Use the full-page option when the whole scrollable document matters, rather than just the visible view. Playwright screenshot documentation
Crop to the menu
Use the menu’s locator when only the dropdown region is needed:

Handle native select controls differently
A native HTML <select> is not the same as a custom menu made of webpage elements. Playwright documents selectOption() for choosing an option by value or label. That changes the selected value; the API documentation does not describe it as opening and photographing the platform’s expanded popup.

Make captures more reliable
- Wait for a meaningful visible state, such as the listbox or an option, rather than relying on an arbitrary delay.
- Keep the screenshot before any click that selects an item or dismisses the menu.
- If animations make captures inconsistent, Playwright’s locator screenshot API provides an animations option. Check its exact behavior for the Playwright release installed in your project. Playwright locator screenshot API
- When using an element crop, confirm the menu is not covered and that the needed portion of a scrollable menu is in view.

Will a screenshot show the expanded popup for a native select?
That is not guaranteed by Playwright’s documented selectOption API. It selects a value or label; it does not promise to display the native popup in a screenshot.
