With Playwright, request the full scrollable page using fullPage: true. That captures the document from top to bottom, but the API does not guarantee how every site’s sticky header will appear in that tall image. If the header must be visible in a particular state, capture the header separately while it is visible, then inspect both images.
Choose what the screenshot needs to show
| Capture | What it shows | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| Viewport | The currently visible screen, including a sticky header if it is visible at that moment. | You need to preserve a particular on-screen state. |
| Full page | The full scrollable document in one tall image. | You need the page from top to bottom. |
| Header element | A crop bounded by the header element. | You also need a separate image of the header in its visible state. |
Playwright documents fullPage: true as the way to capture the full scrollable page. A locator screenshot captures an element within its bounds; it is a useful separate capture, not a universal guarantee about sticky-header rendering during full-page capture. See the Playwright screenshots guide and locator screenshot API.
Capture the full page and the header with Playwright
This Node.js example opens a page, scrolls through it to give scroll-triggered content a chance to load, then saves a full-page image and a separate header crop. Replace the URL and selector with those used by your site. Install Playwright and its browser before running it.
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
try {
await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle' });
// Allow content triggered by scrolling to render before full-page capture.
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const step = Math.max(300, Math.floor(window.innerHeight * 0.8));
for (let y = 0; y < document.documentElement.scrollHeight; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await new Promise(resolve => setTimeout(resolve, 150));
}
window.scrollTo(0, 0);
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
const header = page.locator('header').first();
await header.waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await header.screenshot({ path: 'header.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The scroll delay is an example, not a guarantee that a particular site’s lazy-loaded images or data are ready. Replace it with a wait for a meaningful selector or page-specific completion condition when possible. If the header is only sticky after scrolling, scroll to the desired position and capture the header there. If you also need the whole page, keep the full-page and header images as separate artifacts.
Make the capture repeatable for an AI agent
- Set the viewport. Use the same width and height for each run; responsive layouts can change both the header and document height.
- Wait for the right page state. Navigate to the target URL, then wait for a stable selector or required content rather than assuming navigation alone means all page content is ready.
- Trigger scroll-loaded content. Scroll through the document and wait for the relevant sections or images to appear before taking the full-page image.
- Capture the document. Use
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true }). - Capture a required header state explicitly. If the header must be shown as it appears in the viewport, take a viewport or header-element screenshot at the intended scroll position.
- Inspect the output. Check the header, overlays, missing sections, and repeated content. A successful screenshot call does not itself verify that the image meets the task.
For an AI workflow using Playwright MCP, the screenshot tool supports viewport, element, and full-page capture. Its documentation says full-page capture cannot be combined with an element target. The scale option selects CSS-pixel or device-pixel output: CSS scale tracks CSS layout dimensions, while device scale produces higher-resolution output. See Playwright MCP documentation.

Stabilize screenshots used in tests
For visual regression checks, use the same browser and execution environment for the baseline and later captures. Playwright Test’s toHaveScreenshot() waits for two consecutive screenshots to match before comparing with the stored expectation. Screenshot options include animation handling, masks, clipping, and injected styles, which can reduce variation. They do not guarantee pixel-identical output across different operating systems, browser versions, settings, hardware, power sources, or headless modes. See Playwright visual comparisons and the PageAssertions API.
Troubleshooting missing or repeated sticky headers
- The header is absent from the long screenshot: Full-page rendering behavior can depend on the page’s implementation. Capture the header separately while it is visible, and inspect the resulting images.
- The header appears more than once: Check the image and compare it with a viewport capture. A full-page image and a viewport image represent different capture scopes; do not assume the full-page result preserves only one visible sticky state.
- Sections or images are missing: The page may load content on scroll. Scroll through it, wait for the target content to render, and then capture. Prefer a page-specific selector or ready condition over a fixed delay where available.
- The header crop fails: Confirm the selector matches a visible element. Replace
headerwith the site’s actual selector if needed, and wait for the intended header state before calling the locator screenshot. - Test screenshots differ between runs: Hold viewport, browser, and host environment steady. Use Playwright’s screenshot assertion controls for animations, masks, clip regions, or style injection where appropriate; these reduce some sources of variation but cannot make different environments identical.

ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server for AI agents. The API can return an image or PDF; its clean-shot options remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Turn those steps off if you need them. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; response headers report the page verdict and billing status. These features do not guarantee a particular sticky-header rendering, so inspect the result when that state matters.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a full-page screenshot always include a sticky header exactly once?
No. The documented full-page option captures the scrollable page, but it does not guarantee a universal sticky-header result. Inspect the target page’s image and capture the header separately if its visible state is essential.
Can Playwright MCP capture a full page and a header element in one screenshot call?
No. Its documentation says full-page capture cannot be combined with an element target; make separate captures.
