A screenshot request alone cannot log in or grant access. With Playwright, sign in through the site’s normal flow, verify the final page, and capture the viewport, an element, or the full page.
Use an authorized browser session
Choose a browser context the agent is allowed to use. It may create an isolated browser context and sign in with an authorized account, or use a page you explicitly share if the browser tool supports that. Do not assume a new agent browser inherits cookies from your everyday browser. For example, VS Code documents that an agent-opened page is isolated unless you share a page with it; sharing can be revoked. See VS Code’s browser tools documentation.

Use the website’s ordinary sign-in flow. Do not attempt to bypass authentication, access controls, or bot checks. A successful click on a sign-in button is not proof that authentication finished: redirects and cookie-setting steps may still be in progress.

This Node.js example uses Playwright’s documented pattern: wait for the post-login URL, check for a signed-in page marker, then capture the protected page. Replace the example URL, selectors, and credentials with values for a service and account you are authorized to use. Store credentials in environment variables rather than source code.

}The URL pattern, input names, button, and heading are illustrative; inspect the target site and use its actual elements and expected post-login destination. Playwright’s guidance notes that a login flow can set cookies across several redirects, so wait for a final URL or reliable signed-in marker before proceeding. See Playwright authentication.
Save state only when a later context needs it
If the agent must restart or create a new browser context, save the authenticated context’s storage state and load it into the next context. Playwright documents cookies, local storage, IndexedDB, and passkey-based authentication in its storage-state workflow. Do not create or expose a state file unless persistence is needed.

});Keep the state file out of source control and restrict access to it: it can contain cookies and headers that could be used to impersonate the account. Playwright’s documentation recommends treating it as sensitive and placing it in an ignored location. Ordinary storage-state files do not persist sessionStorage; if the site relies on it, a separately scoped save-and-restore step is required. Authentication state can also expire, so a later run must detect a login redirect and refresh the session through the authorized flow. See Playwright’s authentication guidance.
Choose what the agent should capture
After checking that the protected page—not a login redirect or access-denied screen—is displayed, choose the screenshot scope that matches the task. Playwright documents viewport, selected-element, and full-page screenshots, along with image type and scale options. See Playwright screenshot tools.

- Viewport: capture the currently visible screen when the agent needs to inspect the page as a user sees it.
- Element: capture a component such as a report panel when the rest of the page is irrelevant.
- Full page: capture the entire scrollable page, useful for long content. Lazy-loaded content may require scrolling or waiting before capture.
Set the image format and scale according to the consuming tool and resolution needs. Screenshots support visual inspection of layout and bugs; they are not a substitute for accessibility information when the agent needs to understand structure or interact with page content.
Keep authentication data and screenshots private
Both reusable session state and screenshots can expose account data. Store files in access-controlled locations, exclude authentication state from commits and logs, and share captures only with authorized people. OpenAI’s computer-use guidance likewise warns that screenshots may contain sensitive page or account information and should not be exposed to unauthorized users or application logs.

For parallel tests or agents that change server-side data, use separate authorized accounts where appropriate rather than sharing one account’s session. The right session-sharing behavior depends on the browser product: use only a documented sharing capability, and do not assume cookies transfer between tools. A managed option also exists: Cloudflare Browser Run documents agent browser sessions that can inspect live pages and capture screenshots; it is not a prerequisite for the Playwright workflow.
Troubleshoot common failures
- The capture shows the login page. The sign-in may not have completed, a redirect may still be underway, or the session may have expired. Wait for the final URL and an authenticated-only marker; if either fails, stop rather than saving a misleading screenshot.
- The state file works in one run but not another. Confirm that you saved it after authentication completed and restored it into the intended context. If the site depends on
sessionStorage, ordinary Playwright storage state will not carry it over. - The page opens but key content is missing. Wait for a page-specific heading or selector before capture. For content loaded as the page scrolls, use a full-page capture and ensure the content has had a chance to load.
- The agent cannot see the user’s existing login. An isolated context does not automatically share the regular browser’s cookies. Use an authorized login in the agent context or explicitly share a signed-in page if the selected browser tool provides that feature.
- A screenshot or state file is exposed. Restrict access, remove it from logs or unintended storage, and refresh the session if its state may have been disclosed. Treat authentication files as credentials in effect.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI agent use my existing browser login automatically?
Not unless the browser tool explicitly provides access to that signed-in page. Otherwise, sign in within the agent’s authorized context.
Does Playwright storage state include sessionStorage?
No. Playwright’s ordinary storage-state file does not persist sessionStorage; a site that depends on it needs separate handling.
Can an API screenshot call log in to a protected page by itself?
No. The request must have authorized access to the page; a screenshot endpoint does not grant access or replace authentication.
