Use an AI agent’s browser tools to inspect the page, handle or hide the obstruction, then capture the viewport, a specific element, or the full page. First identify what kind of popup you are seeing: a cookie banner or modal is page content; an alert or confirm box is a browser dialog; a new tab is a separate page. The right fix depends on that distinction.
Use the browser agent to inspect, handle, and capture
- Open the target URL. Navigate to the page and wait until the content and overlays you need to assess have rendered. Navigation completing does not necessarily mean the page is visually ready.
- Inspect a fresh accessibility snapshot. Use the agent’s snapshot tool to find visible controls and determine what is covering the content. In Playwright MCP, screenshots are for visual inspection; use
browser_snapshotto identify and interact with page elements. See the Playwright MCP screenshots documentation. - Choose whether to change the page or only the image. If it is appropriate to dismiss the obstruction, activate a clear page control such as its close button or a consent choice. If you only want it absent from the image, use a screenshot mask or capture-time CSS instead.
- Refresh the snapshot after an interaction. A dismissal can change the page and invalidate old element references. Vercel’s agent-browser guide recommends taking a fresh snapshot after handling a covering banner or modal before retrying a blocked click.
- Capture the scope you need. Take a viewport screenshot for the current screen, an element screenshot for one component, or a full-page screenshot for the scrollable document. Inspect the saved image to confirm the result.
Identify the popup before choosing a fix
Cookie banners, signup overlays, and site modals
These are usually elements in the webpage. When a banner covers the control you need, use its visible consent or close control where appropriate, then take a fresh snapshot and retry. If the page should remain untouched, mask the element or apply capture-time CSS. A mask covers the matched element’s bounding box with a colored overlay; it does not dismiss the underlying interface or record consent. A CSS rule can hide the element in the screenshot, but a broad selector may also remove content you meant to keep.
JavaScript dialogs
alert, confirm, prompt, and beforeunload are browser dialogs, not ordinary page elements. Playwright documents that it automatically dismisses these if no dialog listener is registered. If your automation registers a listener, it must accept or dismiss the dialog; otherwise page actions can stall. See Playwright’s dialog guide.
Popup tabs or windows
A page-opened tab or window is a separate browser page, not an overlay to mask. Playwright exposes a popup event for it. If the desired content opens there, handle that page and capture it rather than the original tab. The Playwright Page API documents popup events and screenshot options.

Choose viewport, element, or full-page capture
- Viewport: captures what is currently visible. Use it for a quick visual check or when the relevant content fits on screen.
- Element: captures one matched component, such as a chart, card, or form. This avoids unrelated page content.
- Full page: captures the document beyond the visible fold. In the Playwright MCP screenshot tool,
fullPagecannot be combined with a target element. - Mask or style: changes only how selected content appears in the image, not the underlying live page. A mask can leave a conspicuous colored rectangle; styling can hide the obstruction more cleanly but can accidentally hide wanted content.
For interactive work, rely on the accessibility snapshot to locate controls and use the screenshot to verify the visual result. As Playwright’s documentation puts it: “Screenshots are for looking at, not for acting on — use browser_snapshot to get refs to interact with.”

Troubleshoot common capture problems
The click is blocked by a banner or modal
Inspect a fresh accessibility snapshot, locate the overlay’s control, and handle it before retrying. Refresh the snapshot after the page changes instead of reusing stale references.

The popup remains in the screenshot after masking
A mask covers the matched region; it does not close or remove the page element. Check that the locator matches the visible obstruction. If you need it absent rather than covered, use a carefully scoped capture stylesheet or interact with its page control.
Page actions stop responding around an alert
Check whether a dialog listener is registered. A registered listener must accept or dismiss the browser dialog; without a listener, Playwright’s documented default is to dismiss it.

The screenshot contains the wrong tab
Check whether the site opened a popup page. Capture the separate page if that is where the target content appeared.
The image omits content below the fold
Use a full-page capture rather than a viewport capture. If you are using Playwright MCP, do not combine fullPage with a target element.

FAQ
Does hiding a cookie banner mean the visitor has consented?
No. A screenshot mask or capture-only style changes the image, not the live page state or a visitor’s consent choice.
Can an element screenshot also be full-page?
Not with the Playwright MCP screenshot tool: its documentation says fullPage and a target element cannot be combined.
