If FFmpeg is still running but its network output has failed, FFmpeg’s fifo muxer may retry that output instead. These are separate recovery layers, and neither by itself guarantees gapless playback or that YouTube will accept the next connection.
First identify what failed
Check the process and its logs before changing settings. The key question is whether FFmpeg terminated or is still alive:

- FFmpeg exited: use a process supervisor to launch a new instance.
- FFmpeg is still running, but output is failing: consider FFmpeg’s FIFO output recovery options.
- YouTube receives the stream, but delivery or quality is poor: investigate the encoder, source, CPU, credentials, and outbound connection. A restart policy does not fix those underlying faults.
A disappearing RTSP input is another failure mode: FFmpeg can remain alive while its source is unavailable. Do not mistake that for FFmpeg itself exiting; restarting the process and restoring a missing input are different jobs.

Restart FFmpeg after it exits
Use a supervisor on the host
Run the FFmpeg command under a service manager or another process supervisor that can start a fresh process after termination. On Linux, systemd is one option. A January 2025 user-posted FFmpeg mailing-list example uses Restart=always and RestartSec=5; those are illustrative values, not a universal service recipe or a guarantee of recovery within five seconds. Adapt the service to your host and stream, and make sure it records logs and handles intentional stops the way you expect. Test it by stopping FFmpeg, then check both the supervisor’s status and FFmpeg’s new logs. A service showing that it restarted proves only that a process was launched—not that YouTube accepted the feed.
Check the result in YouTube
After a restart, verify reception in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends testing, previewing the stream, and monitoring stream health and messages. A restarted encoder may reconnect, but the available guidance does not establish universal reconnection timing, gapless playback, or preservation of the same watch event across every FFmpeg build and stream configuration. Use FFmpeg output recovery only if FFmpeg stays alive
FFmpeg’s fifo pseudo-muxer can try to recover a failed output while FFmpeg continues processing. It does not relaunch an FFmpeg process that has exited. In the FFmpeg documentation, attempt_recovery defaults to false, recovery_wait_time to five seconds, max_recovery_attempts to unlimited, recover_any_error to false, and queue_size to 60 packets. These are documented defaults, not a promise about how quickly a particular failure will recover.
The manual includes an RTMP example using -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -attempt_recovery 1, and a one-second retry interval. Treat that as an example to adapt to your actual audio/video mapping and test before relying on it in production; one second is not a universal retry recommendation.

Understand the queue tradeoff
If the FIFO queue fills, the encoder blocks by default. Setting drop_pkts_on_overflow can let encoding continue, but packets—and therefore stream content—may be omitted. restart_with_keyframe defaults to false. Choose behavior deliberately: waiting can stall encoding, while dropping can create missing content. Neither option substitutes for a supervisor when FFmpeg exits.
Verify YouTube credentials and diagnose failed restarts
The encoder sends its feed using the configured stream URL and stream key. If the key was reset, update the encoder with the current credentials; YouTube explains stream-key management in Manage live stream settings.

If FFmpeg starts but the stream does not appear or remains unhealthy, check the failure at the relevant layer rather than repeatedly restarting it:

- Connection rejected or no feed appears: verify the stream URL and key, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection errors.
- Unstable or degraded stream: check encoder errors, CPU load, a local recording if available, and the outbound internet connection. YouTube lists these checks in its live-stream troubleshooting guidance.
- Input has disappeared: determine whether the source is reachable and whether FFmpeg is still running; a process restart alone may not restore an unavailable source.
For a separate primary/backup encoder setup, YouTube recommends testing failover by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, then checking that the player rolls to the backup. That procedure tests encoder failover; it is not evidence that restarting one FFmpeg process will produce uninterrupted playback.
Choose recovery by failure type
