How to Make a YouTube Podcast Stream With a Now Playing Screen

Create a YouTube podcast livestream with OBS, then add a compatible Browser Source overlay—or use episode artwork and a title you update manually.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make a YouTube podcast stream with a now playing screen, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, send your audio and scene from OBS, and add a Browser Source for a compatible overlay—or use text and artwork you update yourself. The overlay is not a built-in YouTube feature, and automatic episode detection depends on whether it can read your audio source.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says first-time live streaming can take up to 24 hours to become available. Its current help guidance also lists channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance for the rules that apply to your account.
  • OBS Studio installed on the computer that will send the broadcast.
  • The podcast audio, a suitable background or episode artwork, and a title for the episode.
  • Permission to livestream the audio and visuals on YouTube, including permission for the archived replay if you intend to keep it available.

If you are capturing a live microphone rather than playing a finished episode, add a microphone or other audio input in OBS. A finished audio file or podcast feed does not require a new microphone.

Create the YouTube live event

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
  2. Create a new stream or schedule one. Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details. Choose private or unlisted for a test if appropriate.
  3. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube if available, or enter the server and key from Live Control Room.
  4. Keep the stream key private: it is the credential that lets an encoder send a feed to your YouTube stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room before broadcasting.

For encoder-based streaming, YouTube’s setup guide covers connecting an encoder and starting an event: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Build the podcast scene in OBS

OBS scenes are assembled from sources such as audio inputs, images, text, media, and browser pages. For a straightforward podcast stream, start with one scene and add only the elements viewers need to identify and follow the episode.

  1. In the Scenes dock, create a scene for the podcast.
  2. In Sources, add the audio: a media source for a local episode file, a microphone input for a live recording, or the appropriate captured application audio for your playback setup. Check the OBS audio meters while it plays.
  3. Add an Image source for the show logo or episode artwork. Add a Text source for the show name, episode title, or other useful information.
  4. Arrange and resize the sources so the title and artwork remain legible at a glance. Avoid placing important text where the player controls or other on-screen elements may cover it.

OBS documents the available scene building blocks in its Sources Guide.

Add an automatic now-playing overlay

  1. Choose an overlay that supports the exact source playing your podcast audio. A tool that reads song details from a music player may not be able to identify an episode from a local file, podcast RSS feed, YouTube video, or YouTube Music player.
  2. Get the overlay URL from its provider. In OBS, use Sources > + > Browser to add a Browser Source, then enter that URL. Set the source width and height to match the overlay’s intended viewport.
  3. Position and size the source in the scene. If the provider supports transparency, use it to place the title or artwork over your background without covering the rest of the layout.
  4. Test the overlay with the actual podcast source. Confirm it displays the right episode title and artwork, and check whether it refreshes when the audio changes.

OBS Browser Source displays a web page inside the scene; its viewport dimensions affect how that page is shown. See the OBS Browser Source guide for details.

Two examples found in the OBS community and a third-party overlay site are Music on stream, which describes a browser-based current-song overlay and lists YouTube and YouTube Music among its inputs, and Glitch Studios’ Now Playing overlay, which describes displaying artist, title, and album art. Those descriptions do not guarantee that either service can read your particular podcast source or identify episode metadata. Song recognition can also fail for muted, non-music, or difficult-to-fingerprint audio.

If automatic detection does not work

Use an OBS Text source and Image source to show the episode title and artwork manually. For a pre-recorded episode, a static scene with those elements is a dependable fallback; change the text and image when you switch episodes. Automatic detection is optional, not a requirement for a clear now-playing display.

Choose stream settings and test the broadcast

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS where available and describes H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval. A podcast scene with static artwork generally does not need elaborate motion graphics. Choose a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain rather than copying a high setting blindly; check stream health in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live stream settings.

  1. Start the episode or microphone feed in OBS and check that the audio meters respond.
  2. Start the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room.
  3. Check the preview for the correct audio, episode title, artwork, and synchronization. Listen for echo or unintended desktop audio.
  4. For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room when the preview is ready.
  5. When finished, stop the encoder and end the event in Live Control Room.

YouTube recommends testing before an event and monitoring stream health while live. Its encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify current archive behavior if your planned broadcast is unusually long.

Copyright and replay rights

YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. A match can trigger a warning and placeholder image; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed content may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Do not assume that a subscription to a music service grants permission to broadcast its music publicly. Check that you own or have permission to use the episode audio, intro music, artwork, and any video in a YouTube livestream—and confirm that the permission also covers an archived replay if you keep one.

Troubleshooting common problems

Problem Likely cause What to do
You cannot start a live stream Livestreaming may not be enabled yet, or the channel may not meet an eligibility requirement. Check the channel’s live-streaming status and the current YouTube eligibility guidance. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
YouTube receives no OBS feed The selected service, server URL, or stream key may be wrong, or the event may not be configured as expected. Compare OBS Settings > Stream with the stream URL and key in Live Control Room. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS.
The stream has no sound or has echo The intended audio source may not be active, or OBS may also be capturing another audio source. Check the OBS audio meters and listen to the Live Control Room preview. Disable unintended desktop or duplicate audio capture.
The title or artwork is wrong or does not update The overlay may be reading a different player, may not support episode metadata, or may not recognize the audio. Confirm the exact input source the overlay supports. If it cannot read the episode reliably, switch to manually maintained OBS text and image sources.
The stream is interrupted after a copyright warning YouTube may have matched third-party material, or the rights owner may not have allowlisted the channel. Review the rights for every audio and visual element, including replay use. Resolve the rights issue with the relevant owner before restarting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a pre-recorded podcast stream that keeps running without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on, it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. For a podcast with a now-playing screen, prepare the visual in the video you upload; StreamNeo does not provide the OBS overlay workflow described above. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
