Move the publishing job to the VPS by copying the Pi’s actual FFmpeg inputs and recreating its working command—not by guessing at a new setup. First inventory the command, media and stream settings; then prepare secure access, install a compatible FFmpeg build, test YouTube ingest, and run the publisher under systemd. If the Pi captures a physical camera, that capture source needs its own plan: a VPS cannot directly use a camera attached to your Pi.
What must move—and what may need to stay
The title does not establish your Pi model, camera, input files, FFmpeg build, or VPS provider. The safe migration is therefore to preserve your existing stream’s inputs, mapping, codecs and output behavior, changing only what the new host requires.
- If FFmpeg reads a video file, playlist, image sequence, overlay or other local asset, copy it to the VPS and update the path.
- If a camera is physically connected to the Pi, the VPS cannot inherit that local capture device. Either transport the camera feed to the VPS by a separate method, or keep capture on the Pi and move only encoding or publishing.
- If the Pi command depends on another process—such as a camera program piping output into FFmpeg—that process and its data path must also be accounted for. Do not assume Pi-specific camera commands work on a generic VPS.
1. Record the Pi configuration before changing it
Save the exact command and record the details needed to reproduce it. Keep the YouTube stream key out of screenshots, shared notes, source control and shell history.
- Input type and every input path; audio source; stream mapping; filters; and any upstream process.
- Output URL structure, container or muxer options, codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval.
- FFmpeg version and build options. Run
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -buildconfon the Pi and retain the output for comparison. - Where the stream key is supplied, so you can replace that mechanism with a protected secret on the VPS.
FFmpeg’s command-line model applies many options to the next input or output. Preserve the order and quoting of a command that already works; changing option placement can change which stream or file an option affects. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation.

2. Choose and secure the VPS
Size for the work, not the word “streaming”
A VPS that sends already-encoded media is a different workload from one that decodes, filters and re-encodes video. Estimate CPU needs from the resolution, frame rate, codec, number of concurrent streams and whether the VPS will encode. No fixed instance size is appropriate without those details.
Compare candidate services on their India region and measured route to YouTube ingest, sustained CPU performance if encoding, outbound bandwidth and transfer policy, storage, recovery-console access, operating-system compatibility, and total price and billing terms. An India location alone does not guarantee a better route or lower latency; measure from the actual instance. Provider regions, plans and egress policies are provider-specific and should be checked before purchase.
Establish remote access before tightening the firewall
Prepare and test SSH access before changing firewall rules. On Ubuntu, allow SSH before enabling UFW, check the active rules, and keep the provider console or another recovery route available while editing SSH configuration. Incorrect remote SSH changes can lock you out. Consult Ubuntu’s firewall guidance and OpenSSH server guidance.

A publisher that only sends video to YouTube generally needs outbound DNS and streaming connectivity, not publicly open inbound media ports. Confirm the VPS provider permits the required outbound traffic and that DNS and TLS work from the instance; do not assume an egress policy.
3. Install FFmpeg and recreate the command
Install a distribution package or vetted build that includes the protocols, demuxers, input devices, encoders and filters your command uses. Check the VPS build before relying on a codec or hardware encoder; a package with the same FFmpeg version number may not have the same features as the Pi build. FFmpeg documents RTMP as a multimedia streaming protocol over TCP/IP; preserve the working URL structure and output/container options when adapting the existing command. See the official protocol documentation.
- Copy required media and supporting files to the VPS, then verify their paths and permissions.
- Install and inspect FFmpeg. Confirm the required protocols, encoders, filters and input support are present in that build.
- Recreate the Pi command with updated paths and the VPS’s protected stream-key source. Keep input/output option order and shell quoting intact.
- Run a controlled test before making the service persistent. Check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s ingest status rather than treating a running process as proof of a healthy stream.
Do not put the stream key in a public command, world-readable service file or shared log. Use a restricted secret file or another protected mechanism appropriate to your system and ensure only the service account can read it.

4. Match YouTube Live’s encoder settings
YouTube recommends RTMPS when the encoder supports it, describing it as a secure extension of RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate encoding. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Match the selected codec to the actual FFmpeg build and YouTube ingest settings. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
YouTube Help’s published H.264 bitrate recommendations, on the page accessed in 2026, include:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstall| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not guarantees of visual quality or a substitute for measuring stable VPS upload capacity. Choose the recommendation for your resolution, frame rate and ingest codec; YouTube lists AV1 and H.265 guidance separately. Leave enough network headroom for the stream to remain stable rather than sizing exactly to a nominal bitrate.

Test with representative audio and motion. In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the new publisher is arriving and review stream health and any ingest messages before ending the old feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing and monitoring stream health.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Keep FFmpeg running with systemd
Run FFmpeg under a service manager so an SSH disconnect does not terminate the publisher. Use a dedicated unprivileged account where practical, absolute paths, a controlled working directory and restricted secret permissions. Ubuntu’s systemd guidance recommends Restart=on-failure for long-running services; a short restart delay can avoid rapid retries. Repeated failures can still hit systemd start-rate limits. See Ubuntu’s systemd.service documentation.
A minimal unit structure looks like this; replace the example paths and command with your working configuration, and arrange secret access securely rather than placing a live key in the unit:

[Unit]
Description=YouTube FFmpeg publisher
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=streamer
WorkingDirectory=/srv/stream
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg -re -i /srv/stream/input.mp4 -c copy -f flv rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_PROTECTED_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
The command above illustrates unit layout only; -re, input, codecs, muxer and destination must match your real source and YouTube workflow. Do not blindly use -c copy if the existing stream needs encoding or filtering.
After saving the unit, reload systemd, enable and start it, then inspect its state and logs:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-ffmpeg.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-ffmpeg.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service -f
Automatic process restart cannot fix a bad stream key, missing input, full disk, blocked egress or rejected codec. Use service status and logs to find the underlying failure. For systemd behavior and restart settings, consult the service manual.
6. Test, cut over and keep a rollback path
- Where appropriate for the channel, test against a private or otherwise non-public event using representative sound and motion.
- Verify the VPS has the correct input, protected key access, readable logs and healthy YouTube ingest. Reboot-test the service if practical and confirm it starts as intended.
- Keep the Pi configuration intact but stopped until the VPS has proved stable. Avoid running both publishers with the same key at once unless your specific YouTube workflow explicitly supports it; overlapping publishers can interrupt or replace the active feed.
- For cutover, deliberately stop the Pi publisher, start the VPS service, then verify ingest and program output in Live Control Room.
- If the VPS fails, restore the Pi command and input path. The exact rollback differs depending on whether the Pi captures a physical camera or only reads media files.
Troubleshooting common migration failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits immediately on the VPS | Missing file, wrong path or unsupported input/protocol | Check the absolute input path, permissions, FFmpeg error output and whether the VPS build supports the input and protocol. |
| Encoder or filter is unavailable | The VPS FFmpeg build differs from the Pi build | Compare ffmpeg -version and ffmpeg -buildconf; install a build with the required component. |
| Service fails while the same command works interactively | Different user, working directory, environment or secret permissions | Use absolute paths, confirm the service account can read inputs and secrets, and inspect journalctl. |
| YouTube does not show a healthy ingest | Wrong key or destination, incompatible output, blocked outbound traffic, or unstable bitrate | Check the protected key source, RTMPS destination structure, codec and output options; test DNS/TLS and egress, then review Live Control Room messages. |
| Repeated automatic restarts stop | The underlying error persists or systemd’s start limit is reached | Inspect service logs and correct the input, key, network or codec issue before restarting the unit. |
| Pi camera input is unavailable on the VPS | The capture device is physically attached to the Pi | Transport the feed separately to the VPS or retain capture on the Pi and migrate only the publishing/encoding stage. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video looping on YouTube rather than preserve a custom Pi capture pipeline, StreamNeo is a managed alternative. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud keeps the stream running without a computer, OBS or home connection staying on.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card.
StreamNeo’s monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a way to publish a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or its pricing page, then start the free first day.
