In OBS Studio, use a Media Source with Loop for one video, or a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for several. Set one output frame rate in Settings → Video → Common FPS Value; OBS will encode the stream at that rate even when the files have different frame rates. Test the playlist before going live, because a loop setting does not guarantee gapless transitions or identical motion cadence across mixed-frame-rate clips.
Choose the OBS source for your files
One video file
Add a Media Source to your scene, choose the file, and enable Loop in the source properties. OBS documents this option for repeating a media file.

A playlist of videos
Add a VLC Video source, select the files in the order you want them to play, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. This source requires VLC to be installed. Keep shuffle disabled if the sequence matters; OBS treats shuffle as a separate playlist setting.
Set one output frame rate for the live stream
Open Settings → Video → Common FPS Value and choose the output rate for the stream. OBS describes this setting as the desired output FPS. You do not need a separate stream for each source frame rate: OBS encodes the program at the configured output rate. That does not mean every original frame is retained, or that mixed-rate footage will have identical motion cadence after encoding.

- 30 fps: A reasonable starting point for typical prerecorded material.
- 60 fps: Consider it when smoother motion matters and the computer and upload connection can sustain it. OBS notes that streaming at 60 fps can be more taxing than at 30 fps.
These are practical choices, not mandatory settings. Check motion in a test stream, especially when the playlist combines clips with different frame rates.
Configure OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Install OBS Studio. Install VLC too if you plan to use a VLC Video playlist source.
- Create a scene and add your source. Choose Media Source for one file or VLC Video for a playlist, then enable the relevant loop option.
- Choose the canvas and output resolution. Set these in OBS to match the stream you intend to send.
- Set the output FPS. In Settings → Video → Common FPS Value, choose 30 or 60 fps as appropriate for the content and available system resources.
- Set up the YouTube encoder stream. YouTube’s live setup instructions guide you through creating or scheduling the stream and connecting an encoder. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the stream key as a password: do not share or publish it.
- Allow for first-time activation. YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours.
YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital streaming format. OBS is the software encoder in this setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS and supports encoder frame rates up to 60 fps; it can automatically detect the encoder settings you chose. See YouTube’s encoder settings and recommendations.

Match bitrate and keyframes to the output
For H.264, use the YouTube bitrate recommendation for the output resolution and frame rate rather than one generic bitrate. The figures below are YouTube’s current recommendations; the page was accessed in 2026.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so check YouTube’s current table if you use a different output or codec. YouTube’s encoder guidance and bitrate recommendations explain the supported settings.

Test the loop before you rely on it
- Start the stream in OBS and inspect it in YouTube’s Live Control Room before sharing it with viewers.
- Listen for audio problems and watch for stutter, unexpected changes in motion, or a mismatch between audio and video.
- Watch the points where one clip changes to the next and where the playlist wraps to its beginning. A loop control does not guarantee gapless boundaries for every file combination.
- Check stream health and audio/video quality during the broadcast, not only at startup.
YouTube’s encoder guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its live-stream tips also recommend previewing and monitoring the broadcast. Review YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Troubleshooting mixed-frame-rate loops
- The stream does not repeat: Confirm that Loop is enabled on the Media Source, or Loop Playlist is enabled on the VLC Video source. For VLC Video, confirm VLC is installed.
- The playlist plays in an unexpected order: Review the selected file order and disable shuffle if you need a fixed sequence.
- Motion looks uneven between clips: Confirm the intended output FPS in Settings → Video → Common FPS Value, then test the affected clips in the actual stream. Mixed source rates can produce different motion cadence; the documented settings do not establish how every mismatch will look.
- The stream stutters or the computer struggles: Try 30 fps instead of 60 fps if the content permits, since OBS notes 60-fps streaming can be more taxing. Check that the output resolution and bitrate match your intended stream and YouTube’s recommendations.
- YouTube reports a stream problem: Check the stream key and URL in OBS against YouTube Studio, then review YouTube’s stream-health information and the encoder settings you selected.
- You cannot go live after enabling the feature: If this is the first live-stream setup, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube to enable it.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
Before looping prerecorded material, make sure you have the rights or permission to broadcast every video and its audio. A loop setting only controls playback in OBS; it does not grant rights or establish that a stream complies with YouTube’s rules. Review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies for the content and channel, particularly if you plan to run the loop continuously.
