Plan an intro that serves the video
Start with the viewer’s payoff
Before editing, write one sentence that says what the viewer will get from this video. Use that promise to shape the opening: show a relevant moment, pose the question the video answers, or state what you will demonstrate. YouTube’s guidance recommends considering the opening during the writing stage and planning the shots and footage you need. Use a simple structure
- Hook: give viewers a quick, relevant reason to keep watching.
- Channel identifier: add your channel name, logo, or a familiar visual motif if it helps viewers recognize your videos.
- Transition: move into the subject without an unrelated animation or long pause.

Choose an editing tool
Use YouTube Create on a supported phone
YouTube Create is a free mobile editing app, described by YouTube as free of charge and without ads. Availability depends on country or region and device. YouTube’s help page lists Android phones with at least 4 GB of RAM and iPhone XR or later running iOS 17 or later, as well as a Google sign-in and supported-region eligibility. Check the current YouTube Create availability and requirements before relying on it, since eligibility can change.

Use the editor you already have
YouTube recommends beginning with equipment and software you already own; phones and computers may include editing software. If your intro needs more complex motion or a particular feature, compare editors by cost, device and file compatibility, available text and animation controls, and how easily they use your existing footage. A paid editor is optional, not a prerequisite.

Make the intro step by step
- Collect only what you need. Choose the video moment, channel name or logo, and any background footage that supports the video’s promise. Avoid adding elements just because a template includes them.
- Assemble the hook first. Put the most relevant image or statement at the beginning. Keep it consistent with the subject and energy of the main video.
- Add channel identity sparingly. Use familiar colors and typography, and include your channel name or logo only if it improves recognition. Keep text readable on a phone screen.
- Set the pace. Remove dead time, unnecessary title cards, and animations that delay the content. Make the transition into the video feel intentional.
- Preview the finished opening in context. Watch it immediately before the main content, not only as a standalone clip. Check that the promise in the intro matches what the video actually delivers.
Keep branding consistent without confusing asset sizes
Use the same visual identity across videos where it suits your channel: colors, typography, and a logo or name can connect the intro with your existing profile image, banner, and video watermark. YouTube’s channel branding guidance lists platform asset specifications, including a recommended banner size of 2560 × 1440 pixels, a safe area of 1235 × 338 pixels at minimum upload dimensions, and a minimum watermark size of 150 × 150 pixels. Those are specifications for channel branding assets, not recommended dimensions for an intro video.

- Upload the completed video through YouTube Studio and fill in its title and visibility details.
- Preview the video, including the opening, before publishing.
- Review YouTube’s copyright checks and make sure you have the necessary rights for the material you used. The upload workflow includes checks; consult YouTube’s upload guidance for the current steps.
- After the video has audience data, use YouTube’s retention patterns to see where viewers skip or leave. If the opening appears to lose viewers, consider whether it delays the topic or sets an expectation the video does not meet. Retention data can inform revisions, but it does not establish that a particular intro length will improve performance.
Cards and end screens are separate optional video elements; they do not replace a clear, well-paced opening.
