How do I make a YouTube intro?
Build the opening around the question a viewer has after seeing your title and thumbnail: “Is this the video I expected, and is it worth staying for?” Answer that promptly, without promising a result the video does not deliver.

- Open on the video’s real hook. Lead with the result, a question the video answers, a relevant problem, or a moment that makes the topic concrete.
- Orient the viewer. Briefly say what they will get from the video. Mention the plan only if it helps viewers understand what is coming.
- Begin the main content. Avoid delaying the substance with unrelated housekeeping or a long logo animation.
- Keep recurring branding purposeful. A short identity cue may suit your format, but it is not automatically useful. Check whether viewers leave or skip during it.
There is no universal script or ideal intro duration established by YouTube’s guidance. The right opening depends on the promise of the individual video and how its audience responds.
How long should a YouTube intro be?
YouTube does not set a recommended intro length. Its “Intro” audience-retention measure reports the percentage of viewers still watching after the first 30 seconds; 30 seconds is the measurement point, not a target for how long your intro should last. Use that report to assess whether the first 30 seconds match the title and thumbnail and hold viewers’ interest. If a fixed opening seems to delay the topic, try a more direct version. YouTube recommends experimenting with opening styles; change one element at a time as a practical way to interpret results, rather than assuming a particular format will work for every video.
How do I tell whether viewers are clicking away?
In YouTube Studio, open the video’s audience-retention report and inspect the graph. YouTube says retention data typically takes 1–2 days to process, so it may not appear immediately. Compare similar-length videos where possible, and look at the shape of the graph rather than reading one point as a complete explanation.

- Gradual decline: viewers are leaving over time. Review whether the pacing and content continue to meet the expectation set by the title and thumbnail.
- Dip: viewers may have skipped that section or stopped watching. Check what happens at that moment; the graph alone does not prove why they left.
- Spike: viewers may have rewatched or shared a moment, or the section may have been unclear. Inspect the content before deciding which explanation fits.
- Top moment: note what held attention and consider whether a similar, relevant approach belongs earlier in a future video.
Use the graph to find where attention changes, then inspect the video itself for a plausible cause. It is a diagnostic, not proof that one edit caused a change or that a particular retention result guarantees success.
What should I put in a YouTube outro?
Complete the video’s main payoff before asking viewers to do anything else. Then make one concise, relevant handoff—such as a closely related video or playlist—rather than stacking unrelated requests. Keep the final visuals clear and leave enough time for an end screen without covering information viewers still need to see.

YouTube end screens can occupy the last 5–20 seconds of a video, and the video must be at least 25 seconds long. They can promote videos and encourage subscriptions, among other uses. Check the current editor and your Analytics: viewers can hide end screens, and they are unavailable in some contexts, including videos set as made for kids. Their display can also vary with performance, viewer behavior, device, and context. YouTube’s end-screen guidance describes the feature and its availability.
After publishing, check the end-screen element click rate in YouTube Analytics. Keep the invitation if it is relevant and useful to viewers; revise it if the destination or presentation does not serve the video’s audience.

Can info cards help direct viewers to another video?
Info cards can link to a relevant video, playlist, channel, or eligible external link. YouTube says creators can add up to five cards; external links require participation in the YouTube Partner Program, and cards are unavailable on videos set as made for kids.
