You can run prerecorded gaming footage as a YouTube livestream by creating an encoder stream in YouTube Studio, building a playlist from local video files, and sending that playlist to YouTube with FFmpeg. For one file, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option repeats the input indefinitely. For several files, use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer when their media properties are compatible, or the concat filter when you need to normalize or re-encode them.
That loop does not make a stream gapless, self-healing or independent of the computer running FFmpeg. Test your files and settings privately before going public, and keep the streaming computer and network available for the duration of the broadcast.

Before you start: confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube’s stated livestream eligibility guidance calls for a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check the channel’s status and complete any setup YouTube requests in YouTube Studio before preparing the FFmpeg output. YouTube supports encoder streams for gameplay.

Create an encoder stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create a new encoder stream or schedule one. Follow the current prompts for stream details and visibility.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown by YouTube. The URL is the ingest endpoint; the key identifies your broadcast to YouTube. Use the endpoint YouTube supplies for that stream rather than copying an old endpoint from an example.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in a command, screenshot, log, or public repository. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the FFmpeg configuration.
- Leave the Live Control Room ready for preview. You will start FFmpeg first, then check that YouTube receives the signal before you make the stream public.
Choose how FFmpeg should join the gameplay files
One video file repeated forever
For a single source file, -stream_loop -1 tells FFmpeg to loop the input indefinitely. It is an input option, so put it before the relevant -i. This repeats the file; it does not guarantee that the transition from the end to the beginning will be seamless.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "gameplay.mp4" -f flv "YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is a structural example, not a universal, ready-to-run command. Replace the endpoint and key with the values from Live Control Room, and replace the bracketed options with settings appropriate to your file and current YouTube recommendations. Do not put a real key in a published command. Confirm your installed FFmpeg build and test the output before using it for a public broadcast.
Several files with the concat demuxer
The concat demuxer reads a text playlist and can avoid re-encoding when the files are suitable for concatenation. Compatibility matters: mismatched codecs, stream layouts, time bases, or other media properties can cause errors or awkward boundaries. Do not assume arbitrary files will join cleanly just because they appear in one list.

Create a text file such as playlist.txt, with one entry per file:
file 'gameplay-01.mp4'
file 'gameplay-02.mp4'
file 'gameplay-03.mp4'
Then use the playlist as the input. The input-side looping option still belongs before -i:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i "playlist.txt" -f flv "YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
The example assumes local files and a playlist you control. Use paths and quoting that work in your operating system and FFmpeg version. Test the transition between every pair of files, including the last file back to the first.

Several files that need normalization or re-encoding
Use FFmpeg’s concat filter when inputs need to be normalized or when the stream-copy route is unsuitable. The filter can combine decoded streams and apply processing, but requires encoding the resulting output, which uses CPU or hardware-encoder capacity. The filter graph must account for the actual number and layout of video and audio streams; there is no single correct graph for every playlist.
FFmpeg’s FAQ distinguishes the concat demuxer, useful for compatible inputs and possible stream-copy workflows, from the concat filter, the appropriate route when re-encoding is needed. Choose based on file compatibility, whether you need transitions or normalization, available encoding capacity, boundary behavior, and how you will recover if the process stops.
Set the output to match YouTube’s current ingest guidance
YouTube’s encoder recommendations can change, so check the current YouTube Help guidance and the Live Control Room settings for your stream before settling on codec and bitrate. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its streaming tips recommend upload bandwidth with 20% headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a successful broadcast.

- Ingest protocol: use the RTMPS endpoint provided by YouTube for the stream.
- Keyframes: target a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds, following YouTube’s encoder guidance.
- Bitrate and upload capacity: select a bitrate within YouTube’s current recommendation for the chosen resolution and codec. Keep total stream bitrate below available upload capacity, with the recommended 20% headroom.
- Resolution and frame rate: choose settings the source footage and encoder can sustain, and confirm they align with the current YouTube guidance. Avoid assuming that a high-resolution source automatically makes a stable high-resolution livestream.
- Audio: verify the source has the intended audio stream and that it reaches the output. A video-only file or incompatible audio layout may require explicit handling.
FFmpeg options are position-sensitive: input options go before their input, and output options apply to the output that follows. The example commands deliberately leave encoding options as placeholders because source media, FFmpeg builds, available encoders, and YouTube’s current recommendations vary. Do not paste settings meant for another file or endpoint without checking them.
Start the stream, preview it and monitor it
- Run FFmpeg with a test file or an unlisted stream first. Watch its console output for input, timestamp, encoding, or connection errors.
- Wait for the YouTube preview. In Live Control Room, confirm that the picture and sound arrive as expected before starting the public broadcast.
- Check the opening and playlist boundaries. Look for black frames, audio dropouts, unexpected pauses, or a failed transition at the end of a file.
- Go live when the preview is sound. Keep the computer awake and FFmpeg running. Monitor the broadcast and the network rather than assuming an infinite input loop makes the whole service unattended.
- Plan how the broadcast will end and how archives will be handled. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that every longer stream is cut off at exactly 12 hours or that all longer streams are archived; check current YouTube behavior and manage the broadcast accordingly.
Make a gaming rerun channel responsibly
A technical ability to replay footage does not grant rights to the game, soundtrack, overlays, or other material in the recording. Review the copyright permissions that apply to the game and any included music or third-party content before broadcasting. Reused or repetitive footage can also raise questions under YouTube’s channel policies, particularly if you plan to monetize; assess the current YouTube rules for your channel rather than treating a successful encoder connection as policy approval.
Use your own gameplay or material you have permission to broadcast, and make the channel’s purpose clear to viewers. Keep a record of relevant permissions and be prepared to remove or replace a file if you discover a rights issue.

Troubleshooting common FFmpeg rerun problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not show a preview | Wrong ingest URL or key, a key that was reset, connection trouble, or FFmpeg output settings YouTube does not accept. | Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the endpoint and protocol, inspect FFmpeg’s output, and check the current YouTube encoder guidance. Reset a key if it may have been exposed. |
| The playlist fails at a file boundary | The neighboring files may have incompatible streams, codecs, parameters, or timestamps. | Test files individually and at their join. Use the concat demuxer only when inputs are suitable; normalize or re-encode with the concat filter when necessary. |
| There is a gap or jump when a file repeats | -stream_loop -1 repeats input but does not promise gapless playback; file duration, timestamps, and encoding can affect the boundary. |
Inspect the end and beginning of the file, test the loop privately, and consider a normalized re-encoded output if the source is unsuitable for seamless repetition. |
| The stream buffers or drops frames | Upload capacity may be insufficient or unstable for the total bitrate, or the computer may not sustain the selected encoding settings. | Reduce output demands to a level the connection and encoder can maintain, preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom, and use a more reliable network connection where available. |
| FFmpeg reports an option or input error | An option may be in the wrong position, the installed build may differ, or the file path or playlist syntax may be invalid. | Check the installed FFmpeg documentation, put input options before the corresponding -i, confirm paths and quoting, and test a single input before troubleshooting the full playlist. |
| The stream stops after the computer sleeps or loses connection | A local FFmpeg process depends on its host and network; an infinite loop does not restart a failed process or restore a disconnected computer. | Keep the host awake, monitor the process and connection, and define a recovery plan. FFmpeg’s loop flag alone is not an automatic-recovery service. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer and connection to remain part of the broadcast, StreamNeo runs uploaded video as a YouTube livestream from the cloud. The setup is: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly service is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for prerecorded uploads, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
