To share a moment without publishing a new video, use More > Clip. To create a separate upload, use YouTube Studio’s Clips and Shorts tools or the mobile app’s Edit into a Short option, if your video is eligible.
Choose the right kind of YouTube clip

The viewer Clip is a shareable link, not a downloadable or independently uploaded edit. The other methods produce a separate upload or draft. You do not need an external editor or special equipment to use these basic YouTube workflows.

Make and share a Clip from a video
Use this method when you want someone to watch a short moment in the original video. YouTube Help describes Clips as 5–60 seconds long and played on a loop from the original video’s watch page.
- Sign in to YouTube and open the video.
- Select More > Clip.
- Enter a title of up to 140 characters. Use the selection slider to choose a segment between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Select Share clip, then copy the link, embed it, or choose an available social or email sharing option.
The Clip points back to the source. Anyone opening it must also be able to access the original video. Clips may be removed if the source is deleted, made private, or violates YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube says Clips made from unlisted videos remain available.

Create a separate video clip in YouTube Studio
Use the Studio workflow to take an excerpt from a video you uploaded and prepare it as a new video. You can select a passage from the transcript or set its start and end times on a timeline.
- In YouTube Studio, go to Content > Videos and select the uploaded video.
- Open Clips and Shorts, then select Create clip or Short > Video clip.
- Select the transcript text you want and confirm, or set the start and end timestamps in the timeline editor.
- Preview the excerpt. If the option is available and useful, add an intro or outro video.
- Select Create draft, then complete the upload flow. YouTube recommends linking to the source video in the new clip’s description.
The tool uses the transcript for selection and for captions in the Short workflow. Available auto-captions can be styled or disabled in the preview. AI suggestions and outlines are only available in select countries and languages; availability can change, so check the options shown in your Studio account.

Make a Short from your own uploaded video
Use “Edit into a Short” in the mobile app
- In the YouTube mobile app, open the watch page for your own eligible public long-form video.
- Tap Remix > Edit into a Short.
- Select up to 60 seconds, then add text or filters as desired and upload.
Shorts made through this route link back to the original video. The option is not available for private or unlisted videos or videos with third-party copyright claims. If it does not appear, check the video’s Shorts remixing or sampling setting in Studio.

Upload a finished Short from a computer
If you have already edited the excerpt into a file, YouTube’s computer upload guidance allows Shorts up to three minutes long when the video is square or vertical. This general upload allowance is separate from the 60-second maximum for selecting a segment with mobile Edit into a Short.

Check rights before you publish
Using YouTube’s editing tools does not grant rights to copyrighted material in the video. YouTube says copyright-protected material in an uploaded Short must be approved for use. If a copyright owner submits a valid takedown request, the Short can be removed and your channel may receive a copyright strike. Review the permissions for music, footage, and other third-party material before uploading.
