You can make a YouTube stream recover after a power outage, but no single setting does the whole job. Power must return, the PC must start, Windows must launch OBS and tell it to stream, the network must be ready, and YouTube must accept the feed. YouTube’s Auto-start handles only the last part: it does not power on your computer or open OBS.
What has to happen for an automatic restart
Think of recovery as a chain. If any link fails, the stream may stay offline even though the others worked.

- Power: electricity returns, and the PC is configured to turn itself on.
- Windows and OBS: Windows starts, OBS launches, and OBS is instructed to begin streaming.
- Network: the router and internet connection are ready before OBS tries to connect.
- YouTube: the encoder reaches YouTube Live Control Room using the correct stream URL and key, and YouTube accepts the feed.
Configure and test each stage. A successful normal restart does not prove the network will be ready after a real outage, and an established stream’s reconnect behavior is not the same as an initial connection attempt made while the internet is unavailable.
Configure the PC and OBS to recover
1. Tell the PC to turn on when power returns
Open the computer’s UEFI/BIOS firmware settings and look for a power-recovery option commonly named “Restore on AC Power Loss,” “AC Back,” or “After Power Failure.” Choose the option that powers the machine on when AC power returns.

Names, availability, and menu locations vary by PC and motherboard. Check the manufacturer’s manual for the exact instructions; there is no universal path to this setting. If the firmware does not offer a power-on-after-outage option, the computer may require a person to press its power button after power returns.
2. Start OBS with streaming enabled
Windows can be configured to launch OBS at startup, but launching the application alone may leave the stream stopped. An OBS Project forum response recommends adding the --startstreaming argument to an OBS shortcut and placing that shortcut in the Windows Startup folder, or using Task Scheduler. This is community guidance, not a guarantee for every OBS version or Windows setup, so verify the behavior on your own PC.

- Configure the OBS shortcut or scheduled task using the approach appropriate to your Windows setup.
- If using the shortcut approach, add
--startstreamingto the shortcut’s target after the OBS executable path, preserving the existing path and spacing. - Set the shortcut or task to run when Windows starts, with any required user account and permissions.
- Restart Windows and confirm OBS opens, begins encoding, and attempts to connect to YouTube.
Windows or OBS may start before the router or internet connection is usable. If that happens, a delayed launch or a retry/check script may be needed. Test any delay against your actual equipment rather than assuming a fixed waiting period will work.

3. Enable Auto-start for the stream
In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room for the relevant stream and turn on Auto-start. YouTube says, “When these settings are on, you can start or stop streaming from your encoder.” In practical terms, Auto-start lets the encoder control starting or stopping the YouTube stream; it does not start the PC or OBS. If you reuse a stream’s settings, YouTube says the Auto-start and Auto-stop selections are copied too. See YouTube’s live stream settings guide.

4. Check the stream URL and key
Make sure OBS is configured with the YouTube stream URL and the stream key for the intended broadcast. YouTube describes the stream key as the information the encoder uses to send the feed. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it unnecessarily. If you reset the key in YouTube, update OBS with the replacement before expecting the stream to reconnect. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection workflow.
Plan for network recovery and short outages
Allow for router and internet startup
A PC that boots quickly can reach OBS before the modem, router, or internet service is ready. Community advice in the OBS Project forum recommends delaying or retrying OBS startup, or using a script that waits for connectivity. Since network equipment and service recovery times differ, test the sequence on the actual setup. An automatic reconnect after a stream has already been established is not proof that OBS will make a successful first connection when the network is still down.

Use a UPS only for the runtime it can provide
A UPS can keep the PC and network equipment powered through a brief interruption, depending on the connected load and available battery runtime. It cannot guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast, and it does not replace the PC’s automatic-start configuration if the outage lasts longer than the UPS can support. Choose equipment based on the load and runtime you need; no particular capacity or model can be recommended without those details.

- With the stream configured, perform a normal Windows restart. Confirm the PC boots without manual input, OBS launches, and OBS begins encoding and attempts to stream.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room and the public watch page to confirm the broadcast is live.
- Test what happens when the network is unavailable during startup, if you can do so safely. Confirm whether OBS retries or whether your chosen delay/check approach lets it connect once service returns.
- When safe, test a brief power interruption and verify the same stages. Avoid interrupting equipment in a way that risks data loss or damage.
- After each test, identify the first stage that failed—power-on, Windows/OBS startup, network readiness, encoder credentials, or YouTube acceptance—and correct that stage before relying on recovery.
There is no single guaranteed recovery time or behavior for every PC, firmware, network, OBS configuration, and YouTube stream. A successful test on the equipment you plan to use is the practical check that the chain works.

Troubleshoot a stream that does not restart
