You can make OBS start streaming when it launches by adding its official --startstreaming parameter to an automated Windows launch. That can restore a stream after a reboot, but it is not a complete recovery system: OBS does not wait for your router or internet connection to come online, and automatic reconnect is intended for a connection that drops after OBS has started. Configure YouTube and OBS, set up the launch, then test the whole recovery path before relying on it.
What this setup does—and what it cannot guarantee
OBS Project documents --startstreaming as “Automatically start streaming.” When Windows launches OBS with that parameter, OBS opens using its configured profile and scene collection and attempts to start the stream. OBS also has an automatic reconnect setting in Settings → Advanced, which can help if an established connection is lost.

Those features cover two different events: the launch parameter starts OBS streaming, while automatic reconnect can respond to a connection loss after OBS is running. Neither is a promise that OBS will detect and repair every failure. In particular, the launch parameter does not wait for Windows startup tasks, a router, or an internet connection to become ready. An OBS community discussion reports that an initial connection attempt made before network equipment is ready can fail.

Prepare YouTube and OBS before automating startup
Choose the right YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, choose or create the intended encoder stream and review its stream settings.
- Find the YouTube Live server URL and stream key for that stream. Enter them in OBS as required by the encoder setup. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Check whether the broadcast is scheduled and whether YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options are set as you intend. These controls govern whether the encoder can start or stop streaming; they do not mean every scheduled broadcast automatically becomes publicly live as soon as OBS sends data.
For a scheduled stream, follow the instructions shown in YouTube Studio. You may need to wait for the Live Control Room preview and click Go live. Verify the intended mode in Studio rather than assuming that starting OBS makes the broadcast public.

Confirm OBS is ready to stream
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and confirm the selected YouTube service or server URL and the stream key for the intended broadcast.
- Confirm the correct profile and scene collection are selected. The launch parameter starts the configured OBS setup; it does not choose or validate your content for you.
- Open Settings → Advanced and review Automatically Reconnect. Choose settings appropriate to your connection and test them; the feature is for reconnecting after a connection loss, not proof of a successful first connection after boot.
- Start a test stream before automating anything. Check the encoder output and YouTube Live Control Room to make sure the intended feed arrives and the correct broadcast is selected.
Set Windows to launch OBS and start streaming
Use a Windows startup or scheduled launch mechanism that opens the OBS executable with the --startstreaming parameter. OBS’s launch-parameter guidance also says that automated Windows launches should use the folder containing obs64.exe as the working directory. This is important even when the executable path itself is correct.
- Locate the OBS executable, normally named
obs64.exefor a 64-bit installation. Use the actual path on your PC rather than assuming the installation folder. - In the automated launch configuration, set the program or executable to that
obs64.exefile. - Add
--startstreamingas the launch argument, after the executable path. Do not append it as part of the executable’s filename. - Set the working directory (sometimes described as “Start in”) to the directory that contains
obs64.exe. - Save the launch configuration and check that it points to the OBS installation you actually use. If you maintain multiple OBS profiles or scene collections, confirm the configuration that opens by default is the one intended for unattended streaming.
The required pieces are the executable, the --startstreaming argument, and the correct working directory. Windows startup and scheduled-launch dialogs vary, so use the labels available in your Windows version; the important point is to configure those three values rather than relying on a shortcut that only opens OBS.

Handle the router and internet timing gap
A PC can finish booting before a router, modem, Wi-Fi connection, or internet service is ready. If OBS launches and tries to stream during that gap, the initial attempt may fail. OBS’s documented launch parameter does not include an online-wait feature.

This is a practical workaround, not a guaranteed OBS feature. The available documentation does not establish one universal Windows retry configuration, so test the exact mechanism you choose rather than assuming it will recover every time.

Test the complete recovery path
- With the stream configured, perform a controlled Windows restart.
- Confirm OBS opens with the intended profile and scene collection and attempts to stream.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for the incoming stream, preview, and broadcast status. If it is scheduled, verify whether Studio requires you to click Go live.
- Repeat a test with network access unavailable when OBS first launches, if you can do so safely. Observe whether your delayed start or retry arrangement handles the timing gap.
- Restore network access and check whether the stream recovers. Do not count on automatic reconnect to solve an initial failed connection unless your own test confirms that behavior for your setup.
OBS recommends testing settings before a stream. A successful manual start alone does not prove the unattended restart path works; the reboot and network timing are part of the test.

OBS opens, but no stream reaches YouTube
- Check OBS’s Stream settings: confirm the YouTube service or server URL and the stream key belong to the intended stream.
- Check the Live Control Room: confirm that YouTube shows an incoming feed and whether the broadcast needs a manual Go live action.
- Check network readiness: if the PC started before the router or internet service, the first connection attempt may have been too early. Test a delayed launch or a connectivity-aware retry.
The stream starts and then drops
- Review OBS’s automatic reconnect setting under Settings → Advanced, then test an actual interruption.
- Check the encoder output and any OBS error messages. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking encoder software, encoder health or errors, CPU load, and outbound internet connectivity.
The wrong scene, profile, or broadcast appears
- Confirm which OBS profile and scene collection open with the automated launch.
- In YouTube Studio, verify that the configured stream key and stream settings match the intended broadcast. Keep the key private; replace it if it has been exposed.
The PC loses power during an outage
A UPS for the PC and network equipment may help bridge a short power interruption, but it does not restore an internet-service outage or configure OBS to resume. Size a UPS for your actual equipment load and needs; no particular runtime or guarantee follows from using one.
