To get more time from your current charge, reduce power use in Settings > System > Power & battery: choose a more efficient power mode, turn on Energy saver, dim the display, shorten screen and sleep timeouts, and check which apps are using power. These changes can reduce performance, smoothness, syncing, or connection availability, depending on what you adjust.
Which Windows settings should you change first?
Windows 11 groups most battery controls under Settings > System > Power & battery. Start with the adjustments that fit how you use the laptop; labels and available controls can differ by device and Windows build.

Choose an efficient power mode
Open Start > Settings > System > Power & battery. Under Power mode, select Best power efficiency while unplugged if you can accept some performance reduction. Balanced is the middle ground; Best performance prioritizes speed over power savings. If the setting is missing or unavailable, the PC’s hardware or manufacturer configuration may control it. Turn on Energy saver
In Settings > System > Power & battery > Energy saver, choose when it turns on based on battery level, or enable it manually in Settings or Quick Settings. Energy saver reduces some system activity and background processes, so syncing or other background behavior may be limited. Microsoft describes Energy saver and other battery settings.

Reduce display power use
Open Settings > System > Display and lower brightness to a comfortable level. If available, open Advanced display and select a lower refresh rate when it suits your work. Lower refresh rates use less power but make motion look less smooth. Dark mode may help on OLED screens; the same saving should not be assumed for every LCD laptop.

Shorten screen and sleep timeouts
Go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. Some builds use the label Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. Shorten the On battery times for turning off the display and putting the PC to sleep to match your work habits. This reduces power use when you leave the laptop unattended; exact labels vary.

Check apps using power
Open Settings > System > Power & battery > Battery usage and look for apps consuming substantial power. For supported apps, you can restrict background activity, but do so selectively: it may delay sync or notifications. Windows offers these controls only for supported apps. Microsoft explains background permissions.

For eligible graphics-heavy apps, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics and choose Power saving for the app. This can favor lower power use over graphics performance.

Switch off connections you do not need
Use Airplane mode when you do not need internet, Bluetooth, or other wireless communications, or turn off an unused radio individually. The trade-off is losing that connection until you enable it again.

Adjust video playback if the option is available
Open Settings > Apps > Video playback and select Optimize for battery life. Some PCs also offer lower-resolution playback on battery. These options can reduce video quality.

There is no general Microsoft figure for how many minutes or what percentage these adjustments add across Windows laptops; results depend on the laptop, battery condition, workload, and chosen settings.
What settings commonly drain a laptop battery?
Bright displays, high refresh rates, a laptop left awake with its screen on, and demanding or frequently active apps can all increase power use. Background sync and wireless connections also use power, though their impact depends on what is running and connected. Use Battery usage to check your own device rather than assuming one app or setting is the cause.
Why is my laptop battery draining so fast?
First check whether the drain coincides with high display use, a demanding app, background activity, or a laptop that is not sleeping when unattended. If runtime remains unusually short after reviewing those factors, the battery may have lost capacity with age. Settings can reduce current power consumption, but they cannot restore worn capacity.

Generate a Windows battery report

Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

Run
powercfg /batteryreport. -
Open the HTML report at the file location Windows displays. Review Installed battery, Recent usage, and Battery usage for capacity and usage information.
The report provides clues, not a repair or definitive diagnosis. If its capacity information and your usage pattern suggest degradation, ask the laptop manufacturer or a qualified repair provider about service. A replacement battery must match the exact laptop model and compatible part number.
Should you leave Energy saver on?
You can set Energy saver to turn on automatically at a battery threshold or enable it manually when you want to reduce some background and system activity. Use it when the possible reduction in syncing or background behavior is acceptable; otherwise choose a threshold or enable it only when needed.

How can you slow long-term battery wear?
Getting more time from today’s charge and preserving battery capacity over months or years are separate goals. For lithium-ion battery care, Microsoft recommends avoiding frequent deep discharges, keeping charge roughly between 20% and 80% when practical, and avoiding high temperatures. These are general recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular lifespan or runtime.
If storing the laptop for a long time, Microsoft recommends a charge of about 40%–60%, a cool, dry location, and periodic checks so the battery does not deeply discharge. If the battery swells beyond the enclosure, stop using it; handle it cautiously and do not press or puncture it. See Microsoft’s battery-care guidance.
Are these steps the same on Windows 10?
This walkthrough is for Windows 11. Windows 10 menus may differ, and Microsoft support for Windows 10 ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but no longer receive free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes from Microsoft.
