Set the preview image in the page’s HTML
Add these tags inside the <head> of the exact page people will share. Replace the example values with information and an image for that page:

The metadata needs to be available in the initial HTML response from the shared page. Apple says link previews do not run JavaScript and do not follow meta redirects, although they do follow server-side redirects. Do not rely on client-side code to add the tags after the page loads or use a meta refresh to send the preview reader elsewhere.

Serve useful, consistent metadata to desktop and mobile visitors. Apple says a client should not need to change its User-Agent header to receive useful metadata.
Choose an image that works at preview size
Use a clear image that represents the specific page, not just the site generally. Apple recommends an image at least 900 pixels wide. Images under 150 pixels wide may be ignored or shown as icons. Avoid putting essential text in the image: it may be unreadable when scaled down, so put the wording in the title or description tags instead.

Provide an icon fallback
If the preview image is too small or low-quality, Messages may use an apple-touch-icon, favicon or icon specified by a link element. Apple recommends square icons at least 108 pixels per side. Keep both the page-specific image and fallback icon reachable at their public URLs.

Apple documents a 1 MB limit for the main page resource and a 10 MB combined limit for associated resources, including icons, images and videos. These are technical limits stated in Apple’s guidance, not estimates of typical preview size.

Debug a wrong or missing iMessage preview
- Check the exact shared URL. Confirm it resolves to the page whose image you want, and choose an image that represents that page.
- Inspect the published HTML response. Verify that
og:imagepoints to the intended image andog:titleis present and specific. Check the server response, not only the rendered page in a browser; JavaScript-injected metadata may not be available to the preview. - Open the image URL directly. It must be publicly reachable. Check for access restrictions or a redirect that prevents the image from loading.
- Check redirects and metadata delivery. Server-side redirects are followed, but Apple says meta redirects are not. Make sure the destination page itself returns the relevant tags without requiring JavaScript.
- Review image and resource dimensions. Compare image width, icon dimensions and page/asset sizes with Apple’s recommendations and limits above.
- Share the published URL again. Apple’s documentation does not specify a guaranteed cache-refresh interval or a preview-cache purge mechanism. A metadata change therefore does not guarantee that an existing conversation’s preview updates immediately.
