To show an image in a Slack preview for your website, add an Open Graph og:image tag to the page’s HTML <head>, using the full URL of the image you want Slack to display. Slack’s classic link unfurling crawls shared URLs and looks for Open Graph and X Card metadata. Make sure the Slack message contains the full page URL, including https:// or http://.
Add Open Graph metadata to the page
Put the metadata in the HTML document’s <head> for the exact page people will share. The Open Graph Protocol identifies og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url as its basic properties. It also describes og:description as optional and recommends og:image:alt when you specify an image.

<head>
<meta property="og:title" content="Page title">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/page-preview.jpg">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Description of the preview image">
<meta property="og:description" content="A short description of this page.">
</head>
Replace the example values with the page’s real title, canonical URL, image URL, and description. The image URL should point directly to the intended image; the page URL in og:url should identify the page being shared. The metadata should be present in the HTML head Slack fetches, not only added after the page renders in a browser.

Share a fully qualified page URL
In Slack, share the page address with its protocol, such as https://example.com/page. Slack’s documented classic unfurling flow applies to links it spots in messages and crawls to generate a preview. A bare domain or relative path is not the fully qualified link described in Slack’s guidance. Read Slack’s link unfurling documentation for its description of classic previews.
Diagnose a Slack link preview image that is not showing
- Inspect the HTML for the exact shared URL. Confirm the response’s document head contains the intended
og:imagetag. Check the page source or the HTML response your server returns, rather than relying only on what appears after client-side rendering. - Verify the image and page values. Confirm
og:imagepoints to the image you mean to use and that the page also providesog:title,og:type, andog:url. - Check the Slack message. Ensure it includes the full URL with
http://orhttps://. - Check for a Slack app handling that domain. If an app has a link handler for the domain, custom app unfurling may be involved; otherwise, Slack documents classic crawling as the fallback.
- Inspect your server and image resource if the tag is correct. Review whether the page and image can be fetched and served as expected. The cited Slack and Open Graph documentation does not establish a specific timeout, cache-refresh interval, or Slack image-file restriction to use as a fixed diagnostic rule.
Slack’s official documentation reviewed here does not specify a fixed cache expiration time for classic website previews, nor does it provide an official preview debugger. If you have just changed metadata, do not assume that a particular waiting period or refresh mechanism is guaranteed by these sources.

Classic previews and custom Slack app unfurling are different
| Approach | When it applies | What it requires |
|---|---|---|
| Classic link unfurling | Ordinary website pages that need a standard preview | Slack crawls the shared URL and looks for common Open Graph and X Card metadata. |
| Slack app unfurling | A developer wants custom content or interaction for a domain associated with an app | An app receives a link_shared event and uses Slack’s API and required scopes to attach a custom unfurl. |
For custom unfurling, Slack documents the chat.unfurl API and the links:write scope. Its API reference says a preview field is ignored when supplied for an unfurl to a message that has already been posted, so this API is not a way to force an ordinary classic image preview. See Slack’s chat.unfurl method.
