Make an evidence pack by saving the entire relevant webpage and its surrounding context, recording the exact URL and capture date and time, and keeping a screenshot alongside a PDF or saved HTML when practical. Then open every file to check that it shows what you intended. A screenshot tool can document what appeared on a screen; it cannot guarantee that a court will accept the material.
What to include in a website evidence pack
For each page, keep a visual record and enough identifying information for someone else to understand what it depicts. Capture the whole relevant page where possible, not just a cropped quotation. Include surrounding context—such as comments, profile details, or the identity of a poster—if it is needed to understand the material.

- The exact page URL.
- The date and time the page was captured.
- A screenshot showing the relevant content and context.
- A PDF or saved HTML copy when practical, checked for missing or broken content.
- A clear filename and, for multiple pages, a short index associating each file with its URL and capture time.
The BC Society of Transition Houses recommends recording the URL and capture date and time and capturing the full webpage where needed. Its guidance notes that some courts may not accept only a portion of a page. Read the BC Society of Transition Houses guidance.
Choose a capture method

The BC Society of Transition Houses cautions that saving a PDF through the print function does not always capture the entire website. Treat the PDF as a copy to inspect, not proof that every element was preserved.

Capture and organize the page
- Open the exact page. Copy its full URL, including any path or relevant query string, into your index or notes. Keep the page identity with the files.
- Capture the page and context. Use your device’s screenshot function. Prefer a full-page capture where available; otherwise take enough screenshots to show all relevant material and context. Device instructions vary. The Florida Courts-hosted guide includes examples for Windows, Mac, iPhone/iPad, and Android and advises checking instructions for the specific device. - Save a PDF if useful. On a desktop browser, open Print and choose Save as PDF. If available, enable headers and footers to show the website link and date. Reopen the file and inspect every page for omitted content.
- Keep HTML as an additional copy when practical. Retain the screenshot separately as a visual record. Locally saved HTML may not preserve all page elements or work correctly offline, so inspect it rather than assuming it is complete.
- Name and index the files. Use filenames that identify the page and capture time, and keep a short index mapping each filename to the exact URL and date/time. This is a practical organization method, not a formal court standard established by the cited guidance.
- Check the handoff. Open the files on the device or account where they will be stored or shared. Keep an additional copy somewhere secure, and consider who can access a device or storage location—especially if the content is sensitive.
- Check applicable requirements before relying on it. Ask the relevant court or organization about its requirements. The Florida Courts-hosted guidance specifically recommends checking whether a court can play video and which format it accepts.
What screenshots and saved pages can—and cannot—show
A screenshot records a visual appearance; a URL and capture time help identify the page and when it was recorded. A PDF or HTML copy can add another view of the material, but either may omit or fail to preserve parts of a site. Review the files themselves and keep the originals unchanged where possible.
There is no universal assurance that a generic evidence pack will be admissible or sufficient in every jurisdiction. A vendor’s metadata, hash, or chain-of-custody feature is a product claim, not proof that a court will accept a capture. Follow local procedural requirements and seek qualified legal advice for a specific case.
