Put the page’s Open Graph metadata in the initial HTML response, before client-side JavaScript runs. Use server-side rendering, static generation, or a prerendering layer to return page-specific tags, then inspect that response and validate the URL with the sharing platform where the preview fails. A browser showing the finished page does not prove a link-preview crawler sees the same content.
Why JavaScript-rendered pages can have blank or incorrect previews
A browser normally downloads a page, runs its JavaScript, and then displays the resulting interface. A link-preview crawler may instead read the initial HTML without running the application code that inserts metadata. If that first response is only an app shell, the crawler may have no page title, description, or image to use.
Google Search has its own crawl, render, and index pipeline, including JavaScript execution, but that does not mean social or messaging preview crawlers behave the same way. Google Search Central notes: “Keep in mind that server-side or pre-rendering is still a great idea because it makes your website faster for users and crawlers, and not all bots can run JavaScript.” See Google’s JavaScript SEO documentation.
What metadata the page should return
Place metadata in the document’s <head> and return it in the original HTML for each shareable URL. The Open Graph Protocol defines four required basic properties: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. An og:description is optional but generally useful. The protocol also specifies that when a property appears more than once, the first declaration takes precedence, so avoid conflicting duplicate tags. See the Open Graph Protocol.

Use the actual canonical share URL and a page-specific image that the crawler can fetch. Microsoft Teams, for example, accepts standard HTML title and description fields or Open Graph equivalents and recommends a thumbnail or both title and description; its guidance recommends including all three for best results. That is Teams-specific advice, not a universal requirement. Microsoft Teams sharing guidance.
How to check what the crawler receives
- Fetch the exact URL people share. Inspect the raw HTML returned by the server, particularly its
<head>. Confirm the title, description, canonical URL, and image are present there—not only in the browser’s post-JavaScript DOM. - Check every route independently. A single-page app may serve the same shell for every path. Verify that each shareable route returns its own values rather than generic or missing tags.
- Check public access. The page and image must be accessible to the intended crawler. Microsoft states that Teams can share an authenticated URL but will not create its preview for that URL.
- Use the target platform’s own preview or debugger workflow, when available. Compare what it reports with the raw response. One platform’s successful preview does not prove that another will render the same card.
Choose a rendering approach that returns metadata early
| Approach | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Server-side rendering (SSR) | Dynamic pages whose metadata depends on route-specific or frequently changing content. | The server renders the right tags for the requested URL in the initial HTML. |
| Static generation | Pages whose content and metadata can be generated ahead of time. | Each published route has its own correct HTML and updated metadata after rebuilds. |
| Prerendering | An existing app cannot readily adopt SSR or static generation and needs crawler-ready rendered HTML. | The service or infrastructure handles the relevant routes, returns the right metadata, and adds an operational dependency you can support. |
These approaches solve the same core problem in different ways: the crawler must receive unique, usable metadata without relying on client-side execution. Google recommends server-side or prerendering because not all bots can run JavaScript. For a vendor’s description of the prerendering use case, see Prerender’s Open Graph guide.

Common preview failures and fixes
- The browser looks right, but the preview has no title or image: the metadata may be added only after JavaScript runs. Put it in the initial server response using SSR, static generation, or prerendering.
- Every route shows the same card: the server may be returning generic app-shell metadata. Generate tags from the requested route and check the raw HTML for each URL.
- The title or image is stale or inconsistent: inspect for duplicate Open Graph properties; the first declaration takes precedence under the protocol. Also compare the platform’s fetched result with the current response. Platform caches and refresh behavior vary, and no single cache duration applies across services.
- The page works for signed-in users but has no preview: the crawler may not have access to authenticated content. Make shareable content and its image publicly fetchable if a preview is required; Teams explicitly does not create a preview for authenticated URLs.
- One platform works and another does not: do not infer that all preview crawlers render JavaScript from a successful result elsewhere. Validate on the platform where the issue occurs.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A screenshot can help inspect the page’s rendered appearance, but it does not replace returning Open Graph tags in the initial HTML or validating metadata with the target sharing platform. One GET request produces an image or PDF; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/article -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers say which outcome occurred. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Google’s ability to render JavaScript mean link-preview bots can do it too?
No. Google documents its own rendering pipeline and cautions that not all bots run JavaScript. Test the specific sharing platform.
Will a screenshot API add Open Graph tags to my page?
No. A screenshot captures rendered appearance; the page itself must return its share metadata in initial HTML for crawlers that do not run application JavaScript.
