To make a thumbnail from a video, save a clear frame as an image, optionally edit it, then upload it in the destination platform’s thumbnail controls. For YouTube, a standard video thumbnail is usually landscape (16:9); Shorts use a vertical format (9:16), and the available custom-thumbnail controls can vary by account and device.
1. Choose and save a frame from your video
Open the footage in a video editor or player that lets you inspect individual frames. Scrub to a sharp, representative moment that makes the subject easy to recognize, then pause. Avoid a frame with motion blur, a closed-eye expression, or an important subject obscured.

Save the still at the highest useful resolution available from the source. The exact command depends on the editor. In Adobe Premiere, use Export Frame:
- Open the clip or sequence in Premiere and move the playhead to the frame you want.
- In the Source or Program Monitor, select Export Frame.
- Choose a filename, image format, and destination, then select OK.
Adobe says the Export Frame icon is not shown by default; if it is missing, add it through the monitor’s Button Editor. Premiere’s Export mode can also produce high-quality stills in formats such as DPX, TIFF, TRG, and PNG. See Adobe’s Premiere instructions (page updated January 21, 2026).

2. Edit the still only if it needs it
The saved frame is already an image, so editing is optional. If the crop does not suit the destination, adjust it in an image editor. You can also make modest brightness or contrast adjustments or add a short headline, provided it remains legible at small size and does not misrepresent the video.
Canva documents a workflow for uploading a video snapshot, adding text or design elements, adjusting the image, and downloading a JPEG or PNG. It is a finishing option, not a requirement for extracting a frame. Its own thumbnail guidance lists 1280 × 720 pixels, a minimum width of 640 pixels, a 16:9 ratio, and a 2 MB maximum; for current YouTube upload compliance, use YouTube’s guidance below, which distinguishes upload limits by device. See Canva’s thumbnail guidance.

3. Match the image to YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s Help page recommends 3840 × 2160 pixels for standard video thumbnails and 2160 × 3840 for Shorts. It states a minimum width of 640 pixels for video thumbnails and a minimum height of 640 pixels for Shorts. Use a 16:9 layout for a standard video or 9:16 for a Short, and export as JPG or PNG.
Recommended Free Tools
| Upload context | Recommended dimensions and shape | Stated size limit |
|---|---|---|
| Standard video | 3840 × 2160; 16:9 | Mobile: 2 MB; desktop: 50 MB |
| Short | 2160 × 3840; 9:16 | Mobile: 2 MB; desktop: 50 MB |
| Podcast thumbnail | Follow the platform’s current controls | Desktop: 50 MB |
These are YouTube Help recommendations and limits, not a promise that every account or upload screen will expose identical controls. The same Help page says a verified account is required to upload custom thumbnails. Check the current requirements in your own Studio, especially if uploading from a phone. YouTube may resize an image whose dimensions do not match its requirements without changing its aspect ratio, which can leave black bars; getting the crop right before upload avoids relying on automatic resizing. The resizing behavior is described in the YouTube Data API thumbnail documentation, updated June 1, 2026.

4. Upload the thumbnail in YouTube Studio
For a standard video
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content and select the video.
- In the Thumbnail section, choose Upload file and select your image. You may also see YouTube’s suggested thumbnail options.
- Save the change. It may take time for the new thumbnail to appear everywhere.
For YouTube’s current instructions, see Add custom thumbnails on YouTube.
For a Short
Shorts thumbnail controls are not identical across accounts and devices. YouTube Help says custom thumbnail uploads for Shorts are available through YouTube Studio on a computer and require account verification. A YouTube Team announcement dated July 24, 2026 says creators in the YouTube Partner Program could begin uploading fully custom Shorts thumbnails, while the feature would expand to more creators over time. It also describes three suggested Shorts frames on desktop and frame selection in the YouTube mobile app. Check your own Studio and app controls for current availability; rollout and eligibility can change. 5. Check the crop for vertical videos
For a vertical video, YouTube warns that a 16:9 custom thumbnail is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore, and subscription pages. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history, and on non-mobile platforms. Design for the vertical video rather than assuming a landscape thumbnail will display unchanged in every location.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Keep the image accurate and compliant
A thumbnail should represent the video and follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube’s help page identifies nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content as reasons a thumbnail may be rejected and a strike issued. A striking frame or added text cannot guarantee more clicks; choose an image that clearly and honestly conveys what viewers will find.

Or let it run in the cloud
If making a thumbnail is part of preparing a YouTube channel to run continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option for keeping uploaded videos live around the clock. It does not make thumbnails or stream from a camera: you upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without leaving a computer or home connection on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; monthly service is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, or start the free first day.
