First identify which kind of lag you have: rendering lag means OBS cannot compose frames fast enough, encoding lag means it cannot encode them fast enough, and dropped frames mean the network is failing to deliver them. In OBS, open View > Stats while streaming and use the affected counter to choose a fix; changing network settings will not solve a GPU bottleneck, and lowering resolution alone may not solve unstable connectivity.
Check what kind of lag OBS is reporting
OBS distinguishes missed frames during rendering, skipped frames during encoding, and frames dropped while sending the stream. Streamlabs describes the same broad categories as compositor overload, encoder overload, and network problems. The labels in other streaming apps can differ, so use that app’s performance view or log if it provides one. Streamlabs’ explanation of the frame categories is a useful cross-check.
- Rendering lag: OBS is struggling to compose the scene, often because the GPU is busy.
- Encoding lag: The selected encoder cannot process frames quickly enough; CPU load is common with software encoding.
- Network-dropped frames: OBS cannot send the stream reliably at the selected bitrate, or the connection to the ingest server is unstable.
Use the counter that rises during the problem, rather than reacting to a general impression that the stream looks choppy. If more than one category rises, address each separately and change one setting at a time.
Fix rendering lag caused by GPU or scene load
Rendering lag occurs before encoding: OBS cannot prepare the scene frames at the requested pace. The OBS Project recommends checking for competing GPU-heavy work on macOS and reducing the rendering workload. Its guidance is in OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Check Activity Monitor. Open Applications > Utilities > Activity Monitor and inspect resource use while the lag is happening. Quit only applications you recognize and can safely close, especially other GPU-intensive apps.
- Reduce output load. In OBS, open Settings > Video and try lowering the output resolution or frame rate. If 60 fps is not holding, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. Change only one value, stream or record a test, then compare the rendering-lag counter.
- Simplify the scene. Remove unnecessary sources, reduce browser sources, disable costly filters, and use smaller source assets where practical. Recheck the counter after each change so you know what helped.
- Free GPU capacity in the captured app. If you are gaming or capturing another demanding application, lower its graphics load or cap its frame rate. The captured app and OBS share system resources, so leaving capacity for compositing can help.
Do not use the Windows-only suggestion to run OBS as administrator on a Mac; it does not apply to macOS.
Fix encoding lag by choosing an encoder for your Mac
OBS encoder advice depends on whether your Mac uses Apple Silicon or an Intel processor. To check, choose Apple menu > About This Mac; the overview identifies the chip or processor. Then check the encoder choices actually available in your OBS installation.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
| Mac hardware | OBS streaming encoder guidance | What to try if encoding still lags |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Silicon | Test Apple VideoToolbox H.264 hardware encoding. OBS documents VideoToolbox support for Apple Silicon streaming. | Lower output resolution or frame rate, or reduce encoder demands. Hardware encoding can move work away from the CPU, but does not guarantee smooth performance for every Mac or scene. |
| Intel Mac | Use x264 for OBS streaming. OBS says VideoToolbox on Intel Mac does not provide the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. | Lower output resolution or frame rate. If using x264, a faster preset can reduce CPU pressure; available controls and labels can vary by OBS version. |
OBS documents the architecture distinction in its hardware encoding guide. Avoid switching encoders blindly: first establish that the skipped-frames counter is the one increasing. A different encoder will not repair rendering overload or network drops.
Fix dropped frames caused by the network
Network drops mean the connection cannot reliably sustain the stream’s outgoing bitrate or reach the selected ingest server. Start with stable upload performance rather than a speed-test peak. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide gives 75% of total upload speed as a starting point for bitrate. Treat it as a rule of thumb, not a guarantee; the service’s bitrate limits and other network traffic also matter.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Lower the bitrate. In OBS, go to Settings > Output, set Output Mode to Advanced if needed, then adjust the streaming bitrate under the streaming encoder settings. Reduce it in steps and test whether dropped frames stop; lower bitrate also means lower video quality.
- Try another ingest server. If the stream destination offers server selection, test a different ingest server. A problem that changes with the server may be route- or server-specific.
- Compare another destination as a diagnosis. If practical, test another streaming service. If drops occur only with one destination, that points toward a destination or route issue, not necessarily your Mac.
- Test wired networking. If you are on Wi-Fi, try Ethernet with a known-good cable and, if your Mac lacks an Ethernet port, a compatible adapter. Confirm the adapter works with your Mac model before buying anything.
- Check local network interference. Restart the modem or router if appropriate. Temporarily test whether a VPN or security software is interfering only if you can do so safely; restore protection immediately after the test.
- Escalate persistent issues. If drops continue despite a suitable bitrate and local checks, contact your ISP. Congestion or routing outside your home may not be under your control.
OBS also offers dynamic bitrate to reduce dropped frames when the connection cannot keep up. It can lower quality as conditions change, and OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying connection problem. Use it as a fallback, not a substitute for diagnosing the connection.
Use this short decision path
- Rendering counter rises: Check Activity Monitor, reduce scene complexity or output load, and free GPU capacity in the captured app.
- Encoding counter rises: Verify Mac architecture, choose the appropriate OBS encoder, and reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoder demands if needed.
- Network dropped-frames counter rises: Reduce bitrate relative to stable upload, test another server, and compare wired networking with Wi-Fi.
- More than one counter rises: Fix one category at a time and retest; one symptom can mask another.
