LAN and invitations cost no additional hosting fee, while dedicated servers use free official software but require your own computer and network setup.

Choose the temporary-server method first
The right setup depends on edition, network location and whether the host must remain in the world. Java and Bedrock are separate editions: players on Java can join Java-hosted games, and Bedrock players can join Bedrock-hosted games, but the editions do not cross-join.

If everyone is physically connected to the same router, LAN or an invitation is usually faster than installing server software. If even one player is outside that network, use a dedicated server or a hosted Realm. Decide this before creating the world: moving a world between a hosted session and a dedicated server requires copying files and checking version compatibility.
What to prepare before the session
Make an edition list before anyone downloads anything. Ask each player whether they will use Java or Bedrock, then choose the matching host method. A Java server cannot accept a Bedrock client, and a Bedrock Dedicated Server cannot accept a Java client. Also write down the Minecraft release installed on each computer or console. A matching edition with a mismatched release can still prevent a connection.
#1 Best Overall
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
- Choose the host: For LAN, the host is the person whose world is open. For a dedicated server, select a computer that can remain powered on, connected and undisturbed for the full play window.
- Choose the world: Create a fresh temporary world or copy an existing one. Make a backup before replacing files, changing versions or experimenting with server settings.
- Choose privacy settings: Keep a Java whitelist or Bedrock allowlist ready for a private group. Share any address or invitation only with the intended players.
- Check platform rules: Console players may need the paid online multiplayer subscription required by their platform, even when the Minecraft setup itself has no separate hosting charge.
- Plan the shutdown: Reserve a few minutes at the end to stop a dedicated server cleanly and back up the world instead of closing the terminal abruptly.
For a one-night event, avoid changing several variables at once. Test one friend’s connection first, then send the final details to the rest of the group. This catches edition, release, account and firewall problems while there is still time to fix them.
Option 1: Open a temporary Java world to LAN
Java’s LAN feature is the quickest way to play for one evening without creating a separate server directory. The host’s computer runs the world, and closing that world ends the session. Minecraft describes starting a Java LAN server as a simple process because no dedicated server download or separate configuration folder is required.
Steps
- Start Java Edition and create a new world or load the world you want to use.
- Press Esc to open the pause menu, then choose Open to LAN.
- Choose the game mode for visiting players and decide whether cheats should be enabled. These choices are made before the LAN world starts.
- If needed, set a LAN port in the dialog; otherwise leave the generated setting in place.
- Choose Start LAN World.
- Have friends on the same local network open Multiplayer and select the discovered LAN world. If it does not appear, verify that every player is connected to the same network and that the host’s firewall permits Minecraft.
LAN is not an always-online server. Friends cannot return after the host leaves the world, and players outside the local network normally cannot connect directly without a different hosting arrangement. Putting a public address in the chat does not turn LAN discovery into internet hosting; outside-LAN access requires a dedicated server or hosted service and appropriate network configuration.
LAN pitfalls to check early
- A guest Wi-Fi network or client-isolation setting can prevent devices on the same premises from seeing one another.
- A computer firewall can block Java even when the devices are on the same router. Allow Minecraft or Java through the firewall, then restart the world with Open to LAN.
- All participants must use Java Edition. A Bedrock player on the same Wi-Fi still cannot join the Java LAN world.
- Closing the host’s world, signing out or shutting down the computer ends the shared session. Save before leaving if anyone wants to preserve progress.
Option 2: Invite Bedrock friends to a one-off game
Bedrock’s built-in invitation flow is suitable when the players are already connected through the host’s Microsoft/Xbox friend list. It keeps the world attached to the host rather than creating an independent server process. This is often the simplest choice for a short session involving Bedrock devices across the internet.
Steps
- Open Bedrock Edition and load the world you want to play.
- Open the in-game menu and choose Invite to Game.
- Select the friends who should join and send the invitations.
- Keep the world loaded while friends play. When the host leaves, the invitation session does not continue as an always-online server.
Every player must use Bedrock Edition and a compatible current release. Console players may also need the online multiplayer subscription required by their platform. Confirm that the invitation is going to the correct Microsoft/Xbox identity; a similarly named account or an offline profile will not receive the intended access.
When an invitation is not enough
Invite to Game is a shared-world session, not a server that continues independently. If the group wants to play while the original host is away, or wants a world that remains available between nights, move to a Bedrock Dedicated Server or Realms. Those options also make it easier to apply an allowlist and keep a predictable connection point for repeat sessions.
Option 3: Run a temporary Java dedicated server
A Java dedicated server is the flexible choice for friends on different networks. It is free to download from Minecraft, but the host supplies the computer, Java runtime, firewall permissions and, when necessary, router configuration. The official Java download is compatible with Java Edition only. Minecraft warns that privately made servers and home networks are operated at the owner’s risk and are not supported by its help service.

What you need
- A computer that can remain powered on and connected for the entire session.
- The official Minecraft: Java Edition server JAR. The official server software is free to download; that does not remove the need for your own hardware, electricity or internet connection.
- A compatible Java Runtime Environment installed on the host.
- A Minecraft release that matches the release installed by every player.
- Permission to change the host computer’s firewall and, for outside-LAN players, possibly the router.
Initial installation
- Make a new, dedicated folder for the temporary server and place the official Java server JAR inside it.
- Launch the JAR with the installed Java runtime. The first launch creates the server’s configuration files, including
eula.txt. - Open
eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and accept it only if you agree to its terms. Save the file. - Open
server.propertiesand set the world name, game mode, difficulty and other session settings you need. - For a private event, enable the server whitelist and add each player’s username. A whitelist prevents uninvited accounts from joining if the address becomes known.
- Launch the server again and wait for the console to report that it is ready before asking players to connect.
Use a separate folder for each temporary experiment. This keeps generated configuration and world files together and makes it easier to identify the correct backup. Do not delete eula.txt, the properties file or the world folder while the server is running.
Let players connect
Players must choose Java Edition and use a compatible release. Friends on the same home network may be able to connect using the host computer’s local address. Friends elsewhere need the host’s reachable address, and the host may need to allow the server through the operating-system firewall and configure port forwarding on the router. The official Minecraft download guidance specifically notes that outside-LAN connections can require both firewall and port-forwarding configuration.
Network configuration is the part most likely to make a supposedly temporary setup take longer than expected. The router, firewall and server process all need to be working at the same time. If a friend cannot connect, first verify that the console says the server is ready, then check the firewall, router rule, edition, release and address in that order.

Send connection details privately to the intended players, keep the whitelist active and remove access after the event. Minecraft’s own guidance says home-network and privately made server setups are at the owner’s risk, so do not treat a temporary server as a reason to expose unnecessary services.
End the session safely
- In the server console, enter
stopand submit it. - Wait for the process to finish saving the world before closing the terminal or shutting down the computer.
- Copy the world folder to a backup location if the group may play again.
- After confirming the backup, delete the temporary server directory if you no longer need it. Remove any router port-forwarding rule and firewall exception that you created solely for this session.
A clean stop matters even for a world you plan to delete. It gives the server time to write the latest world state and avoids confusing a later troubleshooting session with a partially saved folder.
Option 4: Run a temporary Bedrock Dedicated Server
The Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS) is Minecraft’s official server software for Bedrock Edition. The current download page lists packages for Windows and Ubuntu Linux and identifies the software as free. Requirements are version-sensitive, so check the current download page before installing.
Published system considerations
| Item | Current listed consideration |
|---|---|
| Windows | Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later |
| Windows Server | Windows Server 2016 or later |
| Linux | Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM |
| Available storage | 180 MB to 1 GB |
| Connectivity | Broadband internet |
These figures are current package considerations rather than a promise that every world will perform identically. Treat them as version-sensitive, and recheck the download page when you install a later release.

Installation and configuration
- Download the current Bedrock Dedicated Server package for Windows or Ubuntu Linux.
- Extract the ZIP archive into an empty folder.
- Launch the supplied executable or command-line file. The first run generates world and configuration files.
- Edit
server.propertiesfor the temporary world’s settings. Configure permissions and the allowlist so only the intended group can join. - To use an existing world, copy that world’s folder into the server’s
worlds/directory as documented for BDS. - Allow the server through the host firewall and configure network access if players will connect from outside the local network.
- Give players the address and connection details only after the server is running.
Keep the extracted folder intact while the server is active. The executable, configuration files and worlds/ directory work as one installation. Copy the world folder only after the server has stopped, and use a backup rather than moving the only copy when experimenting.
All players must use Bedrock Edition on a compatible current release. Java players cannot join this server. A Bedrock player on a console may still be subject to that console’s online-service requirement.
Close and preserve the world
Stop BDS using its normal clean shutdown procedure, wait for world data to finish saving, and then close the process. Preserve the world folder if the group might return. A saved folder can be copied into a later server installation, provided the game version and server configuration remain compatible.
Realms: the hosted alternative
Minecraft Realms is an official subscription-based private-server service. It removes the need to keep your own computer running and handles online hosting for the Realm. Because plans, prices and included limits can change, check the current Realms plan page in the Minecraft launcher or account interface before subscribing. No current price or player-limit figure is stated here.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Realms is useful when players are spread across different networks and the host does not want to configure a firewall, router or dedicated-server process. It is less suitable if you only need a single short session and do not want a recurring subscription. Unlike LAN or Invite to Game, the Realm remains hosted under the subscription rather than disappearing when the original host leaves the world.
Compare the total convenience rather than only the advertised subscription amount. A Realm reduces home-network administration, while self-hosting has no software fee but uses your computer, broadband connection and time. Verify the current plan terms, renewal behavior and included limits in the official account interface before paying.
Cost, control and availability compared
LAN and Bedrock invitations are included multiplayer features, so there is no additional server-hosting bill. A dedicated Java or Bedrock server also uses free official software, but “free” means you provide the host machine, storage, electricity, broadband and technical setup. Router or firewall changes may be required for friends outside the LAN. Realms is the paid convenience option: it is hosted for you, but the subscription price and plan details can change.

Edition and version checks before anyone joins
- Edition: Confirm that everyone is on Java or everyone is on Bedrock. The editions do not cross-join.
- Release: Match the server’s Minecraft release to each player’s installed release. A mismatch can prevent login even when the address is correct.
- Java runtime: A Java dedicated server needs a compatible Java Runtime Environment on the host.
- Network location: Decide whether players are on the same LAN or coming through the internet. LAN discovery does not replace internet access configuration.
- Account identity: For Bedrock invitations and allowlists, use the correct Microsoft/Xbox account. For Java, add the exact player username to the whitelist.
- Privacy: Use a Java whitelist or Bedrock allowlist, and share the address privately.
- World safety: Back up the world before changing versions, replacing files or deleting a temporary server folder.
- Console access: Check the platform’s paid online-subscription requirement for console players.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The LAN world is not visible
- Confirm every player is connected to the same local network rather than a guest or isolated Wi-Fi network.
- Check that everyone is running Java Edition and a compatible release.
- Allow Minecraft or Java through the host firewall, then restart the world with Open to LAN.
- Make sure the host actually selected Start LAN World; merely opening the pause menu does not publish the world.
An outside player cannot reach a dedicated server
- Verify that the server process is running and finished starting.
- Check the host firewall rule and router port-forwarding configuration.
- Confirm that the player is using the correct edition, release and address.
- Do not test an outside address only from inside the same home network; some routers do not support that form of loopback.
- Test with one trusted friend before inviting the whole group, so a single network error does not become a group-wide delay.
A player is rejected despite having the address
- Check the edition and release first.
- For Java, confirm the username was added to the whitelist and that the whitelist is active.
- For Bedrock, confirm the account is on the allowlist and that the invitation was sent to the correct Microsoft/Xbox identity.
- On consoles, verify that online multiplayer is enabled through the platform’s required subscription.
- Check that the server finished loading the world; an address is not useful while the process is still starting or has stopped.
The world disappears after the host leaves
This is expected for Open to LAN and Invite to Game. Those features share the host’s loaded world; they do not create an always-online server. Use a dedicated server or Realms when players need to return without the original host in the world.
Progress is missing after restarting
Confirm that the server was stopped cleanly and that you reopened the same world folder. Keep one clearly labeled backup and avoid copying a world while its server process is still running. If you changed releases, restore the backup before trying additional changes.
A practical one-night checklist
- Write down whether the group uses Java or Bedrock.
- Choose LAN or an invitation when everyone can use the host’s loaded world; choose a dedicated server or Realms for internet-wide access or independent availability.
- Match the Minecraft release on every device.
- Create the world and set game mode, difficulty and privacy controls.
- Use a whitelist or allowlist for a private group.
- Test one friend’s connection before sharing the details with everyone.
- Keep the host computer, world or Realm available for the planned play window.
- Stop a dedicated server cleanly, back up the world and remove temporary network access when finished.
Which method should you use?
Use Java Open to LAN when all Java players share one network and the host is happy to stay in the world. Use Bedrock Invite to Game for a similarly short Bedrock session with friends already connected through Microsoft/Xbox. Use a Java or Bedrock dedicated server when players are in different homes, when you need allowlists and server settings, or when the world should remain available while the host is not playing. Choose Realms when avoiding home-network administration matters more than avoiding a subscription.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make a temporary Minecraft server for free?
Yes. Java Open to LAN and Bedrock Invite to Game are included features, and the official Java and Bedrock dedicated-server software is free to download. Dedicated hosting still uses your computer, internet connection, storage and electricity, while Realms is a subscription service.
What is the easiest way to play Minecraft with friends for one night?
Use Open to LAN if everyone is on Java and the same local network. Use Invite to Game if everyone is on Bedrock and already connected through the host’s Microsoft/Xbox friend list. Both end when the host leaves.
Can Java and Bedrock players join the same temporary server?
No. Java players can join Java-hosted games, and Bedrock players can join Bedrock-hosted games. The editions do not cross-join.
How do friends outside my home network join a self-hosted server?
Run the matching Java or Bedrock dedicated server on a computer that stays online. Allow it through the host firewall and, when required, configure router port forwarding. Share the reachable address privately and keep a whitelist or allowlist enabled.

Do I need to pay for Minecraft Realms for one session?
Realms is an optional subscription-based hosted service. It can be convenient for players on different networks, but check the current plan, price, renewal terms and included limits before subscribing because they can change.
What happens when I close a LAN world or leave an Invite to Game session?
The shared session ends because the world is attached to the host. It does not remain an always-online server. Use a dedicated server or Realms if friends need to return without the original host.

How do I protect a temporary server from strangers?
Enable the Java whitelist or Bedrock allowlist, add only the intended accounts, and send the address or invitation privately. Remove temporary firewall and router access after the session.
How much computer capacity does Bedrock Dedicated Server require?
The current Bedrock download page lists Windows 10 version 10.0.15063 or later, Windows Server 2016 or later, Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or later, 4 GB RAM, 180 MB to 1 GB available storage and broadband internet. Requirements are version-sensitive, so recheck the current page.
How should I shut down a temporary dedicated server?
Use the server’s normal clean shutdown procedure: enter stop in the Java console, or use BDS’s normal shutdown process, wait for the world to save, then close the process. Back up the world and remove temporary network rules afterward.
The Bottom Line
For the shortest free session, choose Java Open to LAN or Bedrock Invite to Game. For friends on different networks, use the matching official dedicated-server software, install the required Java runtime for Java hosting, configure firewall and possible port forwarding, protect the world with a whitelist or allowlist, and stop it cleanly. Choose Realms when you prefer an official hosted service and accept a subscription.
