1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe dependable way to convert a Minecraft Bedrock world to Java Edition is to export it as a .mcworld file, make a separate backup, and convert that copy with Chunker, Hive Games’ open-source desktop converter. There is no built-in Mojang or Microsoft in-game Bedrock-to-Java conversion command. Chunker can preserve much of the terrain and world data, but entities, player inventories, villages, strongholds, command systems and add-on content may require rebuilding or manual repair.

What the conversion actually does
Bedrock Edition and Java Edition store worlds differently. A converter translates the parts of a Bedrock save that have recognizable Java equivalents; it does not turn every file, mechanic and add-on into a perfect Java copy. Think of the result as a new Java world generated from your Bedrock world, not as a reversible edit to the original.

It is a desktop application from Hive Games, released as open source through its GitHub releases. Search results did not identify an official in-game converter supplied by Mojang or Microsoft. Because the availability of Chunker’s web version is disputed—one guide says it was retired at the end of 2024 while other pages still describe it—use the desktop release rather than depending on a browser tool.
Keep the original Bedrock save untouched. If a setting is wrong, a dimension is omitted, or the conversion fails, you can start again from that copy.

Prepare the world before exporting
Confirm that you have the right editions
You need access to the Bedrock world you want to move and a Java Edition installation on the computer where you will run the converter. Chunker asks you to choose a Java output version, so know which Java version you intend to open the finished world with. The currently supported Java versions for a particular Chunker release were not established; select the version that matches your installed game and change it only if Chunker’s release notes or interface specifically require another choice.
Make two independent backups
- Leave the existing Bedrock world in its normal save location.
- Export a separate
.mcworldfile and copy it to another drive or a clearly named backup folder. - Do not use the only copy of a valuable world as the conversion input.
An incorrect advanced setting can produce an unusable output. Keeping both the original save and the exported archive lets you retry without losing progress.
Move important items out of player inventories
Player inventories are not reliably converted. Before exporting, put tools, armor, valuables and other items you cannot replace into labeled chests in the world. Chests and other containers are among the data Chunker is reported to preserve, while the inventory attached to a player may disappear. Take screenshots or write down which chest contains each set of items.
Record locations that matter
Write down the coordinates of major bases, farms, portals, storage rooms and redstone machines. Also note which dimension each location occupies. A coordinate list gives you a way to find and inspect the same areas after conversion, even if a portal or entity has not survived the translation.
Step 1: Export the Bedrock world as a .mcworld file
- Open Minecraft Bedrock Edition and locate the world in the world list.
- Click the pencil-shaped Edit button beside that world.
- Scroll to the bottom of the world settings screen.
- Click Export World.
- Choose a local folder and save the resulting
.mcworldfile. Give it a name that identifies the world and the export date.
Do not overwrite the original world while saving the export. The .mcworld archive is the hand-off file for the desktop converter. If Bedrock cannot complete the export, resolve that problem first rather than attempting to rename a partial file and treating it as a valid backup.
Step 2: Get the desktop version of Chunker
Download Chunker from Hive Games’ official GitHub releases page. Chunker is described as open source and free in the available guides. Avoid third-party mirrors; a mirror is not the official release and gives you no reliable way to verify that the download has not been altered.

Install or unpack the release for your operating system, then start Chunker. Keep the exported .mcworld and your original Bedrock backup in separate folders while you work.
Step 3: Import the export and select a Java target
Use Chunker’s import screen to open the exported .mcworld. The application reads the Bedrock archive and presents conversion settings before it writes a Java world.
Choose the Java version you will actually use
Select the Java output version that matches the Java Edition installation you plan to open. Do not pick a version merely because it is the newest item in a list; a world saved for a different release can trigger compatibility warnings or fail to load. If you later decide to use another Java release, make a fresh conversion from the Bedrock backup rather than repeatedly converting an already converted world.

Review the mapped world settings
Chunker maps Bedrock settings such as difficulty, game mode and game rules to Java equivalents where possible. Read each displayed value instead of assuming every Bedrock option has an identical Java behavior. This is the point to correct an unintended peaceful setting, creative mode or rule before conversion.
Check every dimension
Review the dimension controls before starting. Multiple dimensions are among the data reported as convertible, but a dimension set to none is excluded and its data is removed from the output. If your world uses the Nether or the End, make sure those dimensions are selected rather than left at an exclusion value. This single setting can make a seemingly successful conversion appear to have lost large areas of the world.
Choose a new output location
Write the converted world to a new folder with a distinct name, such as a name that includes “Java” and the conversion date. Never point the output at the Bedrock save or at a Java world you still need. A separate destination makes it obvious which copy is safe to discard and which copy remains your fallback.
Step 4: Run the conversion
- Recheck the input file, Java target version, game settings and dimension selections.
- Start the conversion in Chunker and allow it to finish before closing the application.
- Wait for the output to be written to the new destination.
- Keep the original
.mcworldand Bedrock save until the Java copy has passed your checks.
A successful completion message means that Chunker produced an output; it does not prove that every build, entity or mechanic transferred correctly. Verification is a separate step.

Step 5: Open and verify the Java world
Launch Java Edition, open the single-player world list and load the converted world. Use the coordinate notes you made earlier to inspect representative areas rather than checking only the spawn point.
Use this verification checklist
- Visit the main base, storage rooms and the largest builds.
- Open several chests and confirm that their contents are present.
- Inspect the Overworld, Nether and End if the original used them.
- Compare biomes, terrain borders and important landmarks with your notes or screenshots.
- Check maps that were displayed in item frames or carried by players.
- Test farms, doors, minecarts, elevators and other redstone machinery.
- Look for villagers, animals, hostile mobs and armor stands that should have been present.
- Test command blocks and any command-driven systems in a controlled area.
- Save, close and reopen the Java world to ensure that it remains loadable.
Perform the first inspection in a copy of the converted output if you plan to experiment. Keep a clean converted copy until you know which repairs are necessary.
What Chunker is reported to carry over
The following categories are reported as convertible. “Reported” describes the capability described by the available guides; it is not a promise that every custom build will survive unchanged.
| World data | Expected result | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Blocks and terrain | Reported as converted | Compare large builds, unusual blocks and edges between explored areas. |
| Biomes | Reported as converted | Walk through key regions and check that biome-dependent areas still look correct. |
| Level settings | Mapped where a Java equivalent exists | Confirm difficulty, game mode and game rules after the first load. |
| Tile entities and containers | Reported as converted | Open chests and inspect storage, signs and other block-attached data. |
| Items in containers | Reported as converted | Check representative chests before dismantling the Bedrock backup. |
| Multiple dimensions | Reported as convertible | Ensure each required dimension was selected; “none” removes that dimension’s data. |
| In-game maps | Reported as converted | Open maps in Java and compare their coverage and markers. |
What will not reliably come across
| Feature | Conversion expectation | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| Mobs and animals | Not reliable | Expect to replace missing creatures and retest farms that depend on them. |
| Villagers | Not reliable | Plan to repopulate trading halls or breeder systems manually. |
| Armor stands and other entities | Not reliable | Inspect displays and recreate missing entities in Java. |
| Player inventories | Not reliable | Move important items into containers before export. |
| Villages and strongholds | Unsupported or limited | Do not assume generated structures will retain their Bedrock state; verify each one. |
| Mods, data packs, resource packs and behavior packs | Not converted | Install Java-compatible replacements separately, if they exist, and configure them for Java. |
| Redstone contraptions | May need adjustment | Test timing, powered blocks and moving parts instead of trusting a visual match. |
| Command blocks and command systems | May need adjustment | Review commands for Java syntax and retest each automated sequence. |
The limitations are especially important for survival worlds. A landscape can look intact while the villagers, inventory items or automation that made the world functional are gone.
Repair the converted world systematically
Restore inventory items from your storage plan
Use the labeled chests you prepared before export as the source of truth. Move items back into your Java inventory only after confirming that the containers themselves are correct. If a container is empty or damaged, return to the original Bedrock world and export again rather than guessing what was lost.
Rebuild entity-dependent areas
Trading halls, animal pens, mob displays and armor-stand decorations depend on entities that are not reliable conversion targets. Mark these areas on your coordinate list, then rebuild them one at a time. Test doors, beds, workstations and transport paths as you repopulate them.
Test redstone in small sections
Start with a safe copy and isolate one machine at a time. Verify input switches, clocks, pistons, observers, minecarts and output collection. A circuit that looks unchanged can behave differently because Java and Bedrock use different update and timing rules. Replace a machine only after you have identified which part fails.

Audit command blocks
Commands written for Bedrock may use syntax, selectors or assumptions that do not match Java. Trigger each command manually in a controlled area, read the feedback, and adapt the command before reconnecting it to a clock or redstone line. Keep a written list of the original commands so that a failed edit can be undone.

Handle packs and add-ons separately
Mods, data packs, resource packs and behavior packs are not converted. Remove the expectation that a Bedrock add-on will load in Java. Find a Java implementation of the same idea only after the base world works, and add one pack at a time so you can identify conflicts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting common results
The converter will not open the file
Confirm that Bedrock’s Export World action completed and that the file still ends in .mcworld. Re-export from the untouched Bedrock world and try again. Do not use a renamed folder or a partial download as a substitute for the archive.
A dimension is missing
Return to the conversion settings and inspect the dimension selection. A dimension set to none is intentionally excluded and its data is removed. Start a new conversion from the backup with the required dimensions enabled.
Chests are present but the player has no items
This is consistent with the reported limitation on player inventories. Check the storage chests you prepared before export. If an item existed only in a player inventory, it may need to be recovered from the Bedrock copy or replaced manually.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Villagers, animals or armor stands disappeared
Entities are not reliable conversion targets. Verify that the terrain and containers are intact, then repopulate the area in Java. Do not repeatedly convert the same damaged output expecting entities to reappear; use the original export as the source for another attempt.
A redstone machine or command system no longer works
Redstone and command blocks may require manual adjustment. Disable the machine, test each stage, and adapt command syntax for Java. Keep a clean converted copy so that experiments do not permanently alter your only usable result.
Best Value
Java refuses to load the output
Check that the output version selected in Chunker matches the Java Edition version you are using. If the world still fails to load, make a fresh conversion from the Bedrock backup, choose the intended Java target again and avoid adding packs or modifications until the unmodified world opens.
Alternatives and when they make sense
Amulet for advanced control
Some guides suggest the desktop Amulet editor for complex worlds because it offers more control over world data. That recommendation is not independently verified here, and it is not a simple replacement for the documented Chunker workflow. Consider it only when you understand the specific edits you need and have multiple backups.

Third-party web converters exist, but their claims and limits vary. One service claims a maximum unpacked-world size of 10 GB; that is a provider-specific claim, not a general limit for Bedrock or Java worlds. Uploading a world also means trusting an outside service with your save. For a private or irreplaceable world, the desktop workflow keeps the files local and avoids an unresolved web-version status.
Why not convert inside Minecraft?
Neither Bedrock’s world-edit screen nor Java’s world menu includes a built-in command that translates one edition’s save format into the other. Exporting from Bedrock and using a dedicated converter is therefore different from changing a game setting or importing a normal backup.
A safe hand-off workflow for a shared or server world
- Complete the conversion and verification in single-player first.
- Keep the original Bedrock save, the exported
.mcworldarchive and the clean Java output as three separate copies. - Repair missing entities, commands and redstone before inviting other players.
- Give the shared Java world a new name so nobody mistakes it for the Bedrock original.
- Record the Java version and any separately installed packs alongside the world backup.
This order prevents a partially tested conversion from becoming the only copy used by a group.
Final pre-launch checklist
- The Bedrock world still opens and has not been overwritten.
- A separate
.mcworldexport exists. - Chunker came from Hive Games’ official GitHub release rather than a mirror.
- The selected Java output version matches the installation that will open the world.
- Difficulty, game mode, game rules and all required dimensions were reviewed.
- Important items were moved from player inventories into containers before export.
- Terrain, biomes, containers, maps and each required dimension were inspected in Java.
- Missing entities, villages, strongholds, packs, redstone and commands have been identified and scheduled for repair.
- The converted world has been saved, closed and reopened successfully.
With those checks complete, Chunker gives you the most practical current path from Bedrock to Java while preserving the original world as a fallback. The conversion is successful only when the resulting Java save works for your actual builds and play style—not merely when the converter finishes writing files.
