Build your presentation around the competition’s rubric, permitted format, and time limit. Then connect your team’s question or need to its approach, evidence, conclusion, and next step. Give every teammate a meaningful speaking role and prepare everyone to answer questions about the whole project.
Start with the competition’s rules and rubric
There is no single presentation format or time limit for every STEM competition. Before making slides, a poster, or a demonstration, find the organizer’s current rules and judging criteria. Check which formats are allowed, how long you have, whether questions count toward that time, and any restrictions on display size, equipment, or setup.

For example, Penn State Hazleton’s Regional STEM Research Fair lists poster, oral slideshow, and show-and-tell formats. Its published schedule allows 10 minutes total: 8 minutes for the student explanation and 2 minutes for questions. That is a rule for that fair, not a general STEM-competition standard; check the current event guidance before planning around it. See the Penn State Hazleton Regional STEM Research Fair guidance.

Read the rubric for the qualities judges assess. Across the reviewed event criteria, recurring priorities include clear organization, project understanding, relevant evidence, effective visuals or demonstration, and meaningful participation by team members. The emphasis and scoring vary by event. The Society for Science ISEF Grand Award Judging Criteria, for instance, address project results, conclusions, limitations, and team contributions.

What should we include in our science fair presentation?
Use a connected explanation rather than a string of disconnected activities. Adapt this sequence to the rubric and your project: a research investigation and an engineering design project may need different emphasis.
- Problem, need, or question: State what you wanted to investigate or solve, and why it matters. For a design project, explain who has the need and what the intended solution should do.
- Approach: Describe the experiment, investigation, or design process. Focus on the decisions that shaped the work and explain why you chose them; you do not need to narrate every task the team completed.
- Evidence: Show the most useful data, observations, tests, or prototype behavior. Label charts, photographs, and diagrams, and explain what each one demonstrates.
- Interpretation: Explain what the evidence means, whether it supports your conclusion or meets your design goal, and what limitations affect that judgment.
- Conclusion and next step: Give a clear answer or outcome, then identify an improvement or further investigation that follows from what you learned.
This is a planning scaffold, not a required order. Use the criteria for your event to decide what deserves the most time. The Twin Tiers Regional Science Fair research and engineering design rubric is one example of criteria that address project understanding, presentation, and questions.

Choose a format that makes the work easy to understand
If the organizer offers a choice, compare the options against the rules and what your project needs judges to see. No format is established as universally better.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Rules and timing: Is the format allowed, and can you meet the time, size, and equipment limits?
- Communication: Would a spoken explanation, a visual summary, or a working demonstration make the project clearest?
- Evidence: Which format lets judges inspect the data, tests, design decisions, and results most easily?
- Team roles: Can every member contribute naturally and explain a meaningful part of the work?
Slides or a poster
Organize the material so judges can follow the project without hunting for the main point. Use visuals to explain the process and evidence, with readable labels and only the text needed to interpret them. Penn State Hazleton’s STEM Research Fair judging criteria assess organization, the balance of visuals and text, and visual appeal for posters and oral presentations.

Show-and-tell or a demonstration
Make the demonstration central when the format and project call for it. Explain what the device or prototype is meant to do, show relevant behavior, and connect that behavior to the results. Supplementary charts, photographs, or other permitted media can clarify the analysis, but should not distract from the project. Penn State Hazleton describes show-and-tell as a format centered on demonstrating a practical device.
A tri-fold board may suit a poster or exhibit format, but it is not automatically needed for an oral presentation or demonstration. Confirm the event’s display and setup rules before buying materials; the organizer’s requirements determine acceptable dimensions and equipment.

How do we divide the presentation between team members?
Give each person a substantive part of the explanation, such as the question, method, evidence, or conclusion. Assign roles based on who can explain each part clearly, but make sure the handoffs form one coherent account instead of a set of isolated mini-talks.

Rehearse transitions aloud. Each speaker can briefly connect their part to the next—for example, moving from the method to the evidence—without repeating the previous speaker’s explanation.
How long should our presentation be?
Use the limit published by your competition, not a generic target. Confirm whether the time includes questions and whether organizers impose separate limits for speaking, setup, or demonstration. The Penn State Hazleton fair’s 8-minute explanation plus 2-minute question period is one event-specific example; other events may set different limits.
Rehearse with a timer set to the actual speaking allowance. If you run over, cut secondary detail before removing the explanation of your evidence or what it shows. Leave room for questions when the event schedule includes them.
Prepare for judges’ questions
Practice answering in a few clear sentences, using the team’s actual evidence. If you do not know an answer, say what you know and what the project did not establish rather than guessing. Take turns answering so each teammate practices explaining more than their assigned segment.
- What problem or question did you choose, and why?
- How did you decide on this method or design?
- What evidence supports your conclusion?
- What did not work as expected, and what did you change?
- What limitations affect your results?
- What would you test or improve next?
- What did each team member contribute?
These are useful rehearsal prompts based on common rubric areas, not guaranteed questions from a particular judging panel. The ISEF judging criteria and the Twin Tiers rubric both address project understanding and communication about the work.
