You can turn a soda-can wall into a DIY solder-paste stencil by flattening the aluminum, preparing artwork from the PCB’s solder-paste layer, and making openings for the pads. A toner-transfer-and-etch approach is documented, as are CNC machining and fiber-laser cutting; each has different equipment needs and precision limits. The most important design rule is to use the PCB’s paste-layer artwork—not a decorative board image—and align it to the board.
What the stencil does
A solder-paste stencil is a thin sheet with openings over a printed circuit board’s surface-mount pads. You spread solder paste across the stencil, lift it away, place components on the deposited paste, and reflow the assembly. The stencil helps apply paste to many pads in one pass rather than dispensing it pad by pad.

A beverage can is thin aluminum, not the stainless steel used for many commercial stencils. A homemade can stencil can be useful for a small project, but the available maker reports do not establish that it matches a commercial stencil’s precision or service life.

| Method | What it involves | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Toner-transfer etching | Transfer printed resist artwork onto can aluminum, then etch the exposed areas. A detailed maker account documents this approach: LowPowerLab’s metal-stencil guide. | Low equipment barrier compared with machining or metal laser cutting, but toner transfer can be inconsistent and openings can over-etch. |
| CNC machining | Flatten and hold the can aluminum, then machine the apertures. A 2020 project log describes this approach: Making a solder paste stencil. | Requires access to a CNC and careful workholding; the cited account does not quantify accuracy or stencil life. |
| Fiber-laser cutting | Cut the apertures in thin can aluminum with a suitable fiber laser. A 2026 report describes a can-opening tool and fiber-laser stencil build: A Good DIY Solder Stencil Begins With A Cleanly-Sliced Soda Can. | Fast in that reported build, but requires access to appropriate laser equipment and settings. |
| Laser-cut film | Use Kapton or Mylar rather than can aluminum. Adafruit documents this alternative in its DIY solder paste stencil guide. | A different material and workflow; depends on compatible laser access. |
There is no controlled comparison in these sources showing one method is universally best. Decide based on equipment access, how flat and repeatable a sheet you can make, the aperture consistency your board needs, and whether you expect to reuse the stencil.

Prepare the can wall
- Start with an empty can. Remove the top and bottom, then cut down the side to open the cylindrical wall into a sheet.
- Flatten the sheet carefully. The aluminum naturally keeps a curve, and kinks or creases can prevent even contact with the PCB. A 2026 build describes a 3D-printed guide that holds a utility-knife blade against the turning can for a controlled circumferential cut before the wall is opened.
- For a toner-transfer etching workflow, account for the can’s coatings. The LowPowerLab maker sanded the inner protective coating in the transfer area and removed exterior paint so progress was easier to see. That is a report of one etching workflow, not a requirement for CNC or laser fabrication.
Cut can edges can be sharp. Handle the opened sheet cautiously; the cited guides do not provide a formal safety protocol.
Make aperture artwork from the PCB design
- In your PCB design software, export the cream or solder-paste layer as a Gerber. This layer defines where paste should be deposited; a rendered board image does not.
- Include the board outline or another reliable registration feature so you can position the stencil in the same place as the PCB.
- Decide whether to reduce the apertures from the pad dimensions. Etching may enlarge openings unevenly, while cutting processes also have finite precision. The right dimensions depend on pad geometry, material and thickness, process tolerance, and the amount of paste you want.
The guides give different, method-specific examples: LowPowerLab’s 2013 etching guide suggests shrinking apertures by 5–6 mil as a starting point, while Adafruit’s laser-cut film example uses approximately 2 mil shrink. Neither value is a universal setting; do not copy one without considering your process and board.

Make the openings with toner transfer and etching
This is the documented low-equipment metal route, but it has two practical weak points: transferring a clean resist pattern and stopping before apertures over-etch.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Print the solder-paste artwork in toner onto transparency film, as described in the LowPowerLab guide.
- Align the printed pattern to the prepared aluminum and transfer the toner so it protects the areas that should remain metal. The maker identifies transfer consistency as the hardest part and reports retouching imperfect resist areas.
- Open the apertures by removing exposed metal, then rinse and remove the remaining resist as appropriate to the chosen process.
Etching can enlarge openings unevenly, especially on closely spaced features. The source is a personal build account, not a chemical-safety authority: it does not establish a safe concentration, risk-control procedure, exposure limit, or disposal method. Do not treat its named chemicals or steps as validated safety guidance. Before handling any etchant, consult current manufacturer safety information and the applicable requirements where you live; if you cannot establish safe handling and disposal, choose a non-chemical method.

Check alignment and apply paste
- Place the stencil over the PCB and align its apertures to the pads, using the outline or registration feature included in your artwork.
- Spread solder paste across the stencil openings, then lift the stencil without shifting the board.
- Inspect the deposits before placing components. If apertures are misaligned or paste bridges neighboring pads, check registration, flatness, and aperture size before reusing or revising the stencil.
- Place the surface-mount components and reflow the board using a process appropriate to the solder paste and components.
A maker reports that a stencil made paste application quicker than applying it pad by pad, but the cited accounts provide no controlled speed, quality, yield, or lifetime measurements.

When another option makes more sense
- Choose CNC or fiber laser if you have access to the equipment and can securely hold the thin sheet. These avoid the toner-transfer step, but the cited reports do not provide comparative accuracy measurements.
- Consider laser-cut Kapton or Mylar if you have compatible laser access and do not specifically need a metal stencil; Adafruit documents both as stencil materials.
- Consider ordering a stencil if dependable registration and repeat use matter more than making it from a can. Adafruit notes ordering as an option, but current suppliers and regional availability are not established by the cited guide.
