Use Chrome’s headless mode for a one-off capture, or Puppeteer when you need a repeatable script with control over the viewport and page readiness. Then publish the resulting image at a URL that social crawlers can fetch and point your shared page’s og:image metadata to it. Rendering the image and making it discoverable to preview crawlers are separate steps.
Choose a capture method
| Method | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
Chrome CLI --screenshot |
A one-off capture or manual smoke check. | Fewer workflow controls than a script; the documented default output is screenshot.png. |
Puppeteer page.screenshot() |
Repeatable captures with scripted navigation and readiness checks. | You must maintain the automation runtime and account for site-specific loading behavior. |
| Puppeteer element screenshot | A dedicated card or other single element. | The element must exist and be ready to capture. |
Puppeteer documents both page and element screenshots in its screenshots guide. Its API reference documents Page.screenshot() as returning image bytes, or a base64 string when requested. The documentation consulted lists Puppeteer 25.12.0; check the version used by your project because APIs can change.

Capture a URL with Puppeteer
Install Puppeteer in your project, save this as an ES module such as capture.mjs, and replace the target URL and readiness checks to match the page you control or are authorized to capture.

const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1200, height: 630, deviceScaleFactor: 1 });
const response = await page.goto('https://example.com', { waitUntil: 'networkidle2' });
if (!response || !response.ok()) {
throw new Error(`Navigation failed: ${response?.status() ?? 'no response'}`);
}
if (new URL(page.url()).hostname !== 'example.com') {
throw new Error(`Unexpected final URL: ${page.url()}`);
}
await page.screenshot({ path: 'social-card.png' });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
The capture guide uses networkidle2 in an example, but it is not a universal signal that every font, lazy image, animation, or application-specific component is ready. Check for the content the image needs before capturing; for example, wait for a known selector:

- LCD Screen and Battery: 2.7in LCD screen with 2 AA alkaline batteries for convenient on-the-go use
await page.waitForSelector('[data-social-card-ready]', { timeout: 15000 });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'social-card.png' });
Use a selector that your page actually renders, and add checks for required text or image readiness where they matter. For a designed social graphic, a fixed-size card component is usually a better target than a full-page capture:
const card = await page.waitForSelector('.social-card', { timeout: 15000 });
if (!card) throw new Error('Social card element was not found');
await card.screenshot({ path: 'social-card.png' });
Use page.screenshot() when the intended output is the visible viewport or a full-page image, and an element screenshot when the page has a dedicated card. Puppeteer’s guide describes element capture through ElementHandle.screenshot(); use the option appropriate to your installed version.
Make a one-off capture with Chrome’s CLI
Chrome’s headless command-line reference documents this basic capture:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1200,630 https://example.com
It saves screenshot.png in the current working directory by default. The window size sets the viewport used for the capture. This approach is useful for a manual check; use Puppeteer when you need custom waits, selectors, filenames, error handling, or batches of URLs. Chrome’s headless CLI reference also documents --dump-dom, which outputs the serialized DOM after Chrome parses the page and runs scripts. That can help inspect rendered markup, but it does not create a social card image.

Publish the image and add social metadata
A screenshot file alone does not create a social preview. Put the image at an absolute URL that the relevant preview crawler can fetch, then add metadata to the HTML page people will share. The Open Graph Protocol defines og:image and optional properties for dimensions and alternative text.
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/social-card.png">
<meta property="og:image:width" content="1200">
<meta property="og:image:height" content="630">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="A concise description of the card image">
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
See the Open Graph Protocol source for its image properties. The X-specific tag and sizing guidance here comes from a third-party guide, not an official X source in the material available for this article. That guide recommends 1200 × 630 pixels as a practical starting point for a summary_large_image card, not as a universal guarantee. Verify current platform behavior before relying on a particular size, crop, or format.
Check the result before release
- Confirm the image file exists and has the dimensions and aspect ratio you intended.
- Open the image itself to check for clipped content, missing fonts, unloaded images, or a viewport that shows the wrong part of the page.
- Fetch the shared page’s HTML and verify that its
og:imagevalue is the intended absolute URL. - Check that the image URL is publicly reachable by the preview crawler, rather than requiring a login or a browser-only session.
- Inspect the shared URL with the target platform’s current preview tools where available; platforms may handle image crops and caches differently.
Troubleshoot common capture problems
The screenshot is blank or shows a loading state
The capture may have happened before the app rendered its content. Replace a generic idle wait with a selector or other app-specific readiness condition, check that navigation returned a successful response, and inspect the final URL for redirects.
Images, fonts, or late content are missing
A quiet network does not necessarily mean every visual asset is ready. Wait for the page’s expected content and, where necessary, check that required image elements have completed loading before taking the screenshot. Lazy-loaded content may require scrolling it into view or using a capture approach that triggers its loading.

The card has the wrong crop or dimensions
Set the viewport explicitly and decide whether you want the visible viewport, a full page, or one element. For a designed card, capture a dedicated fixed-size component rather than relying on the layout of an entire article page.
The image is correct, but no social preview appears
Debug metadata separately from browser rendering: verify that the shared page advertises the intended og:image URL, then confirm the image can be fetched by the relevant crawler. A local image file is not enough if the crawler cannot reach its published URL.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. A GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Here is a one-call example that saves a WebP screenshot of Stripe; replace the URL with the page you want to capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for API options.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents and MCP clients such as Claude and Cursor. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does capturing a screenshot automatically make it a social preview?
No. The shared page also needs social metadata such as an Open Graph og:image URL pointing to the published image.
Should I capture the whole page or just a card element?
Capture a dedicated element when you have a designed card component; use a page screenshot when the viewport or full page itself is the intended image.
