How to Make a Small E-Reader Easier to Read

Start with larger text, then adjust spacing, font weight, and the screen controls available on your Kobo or Kindle. Menu options vary by model and file type.

Open a book’s reading menu and make the text larger first. Then adjust the font, spacing, margins, and available screen controls on your specific device. “Contrast” is not a universal e-reader setting: Kobo documents brightness controls on most models, while Kindle documents page-background choices, and availability varies by device.

Start with the reading menu

Use a reflowable e-book, then open its reading controls. The labels differ between brands, and Amazon notes that Kindle display settings may vary by model in its Kindle text display guide.

  • Kobo: Tap the center of the page to open the Reading Menu, then tap the Font icon for text controls. Kobo describes this menu in its eReader basics guide.
  • Kindle: Tap the top of the screen and choose Page Display (Aa) to find text and layout settings, as described in Amazon’s Kindle text display guide.

If the menu names differ, consult the support guide for your exact model rather than assuming another model has the same controls.

Make text larger, then improve the layout

Increase font size first

Raise the size in small steps and read a few lines at each setting. Choose the smallest size that feels comfortable at your normal reading distance; there is no single numeric setting that works for every reader or screen.

#1 Best Overall
Eyoyo 3.5" Portable Digital Video Magnifier, 2X-25X Zoom Reading Aid Black
  • 2X-25X Magnification: Supports 2x/8x/16x/25x magnification to zoom in and out on text. Please note that the magnifier must be placed on books or newspapers for reading; otherwise, the image may appear blurry due to the fixed focus
  • 8 Color Modes: Choose from full color, black and white, black on white, white on black, blue on white, white on blue, yellow on blue, and blue on yellow. Multiple color modes are available to suit your vision needs
  • Snapshot & Screen Lock: Supports photo capture and playback. You can take snapshots of important or loved ones' images and play them back. The freeze picture function is also available, making it easier to read and view. Supports TF cards up to 32GB (TF card not included)
  • AV Output: Connect the magnifier to a television using a TV cable, allowing you to view images at a larger magnification than the screen of the magnifier
  • Ergonomic Handheld Design & Foldable Bracket: The streamlined body makes it comfortable to hold for extended periods. The back of the magnifier features a foldable bracket for flat placement on a desktop. Slide the magnifier to read from start to finish in a newspaper. Ideal for reading, writing, and viewing maps, and books

Adjust spacing and margins if larger type feels crowded

On Kobo, the Font menu provides controls for font size, line spacing, margins, font face, and justification. Kobo says the preferred text appearance is remembered for other books. Kindle’s Page Display controls include font size and layout options such as spacing and margins. These settings change how much text fits on a page, so adjust them together rather than enlarging type while leaving a cramped layout.

Try a different font or more weight if letters look faint

Choose another typeface from the available font list if its letter shapes are easier for you to distinguish. Kindle’s guide also documents five boldness levels; try a modest increase and compare a few lines. Kobo documents font selection, but its guidance does not establish a boldness slider on every Kobo model.

Use the screen controls your device actually offers

There is no universal “contrast” slider established by these manufacturer guides. Look for the control your model provides instead:

  • Kobo brightness: Most Kobo eReaders have a built-in light, though not all do. On models with the light, Kobo documents adjusting brightness by swiping up or down along the left edge of the screen. See its reading basics guide.
  • Kindle page background: Amazon documents page-background color and themes in the Page Display menu. Which choices appear depends on the device.

Try the available brightness or background choices in the room where you normally read. Pick the one that makes the text easiest for you to distinguish; the documentation does not identify one setting as best for everyone.

Separate page advancement from page refresh

A page-turn action advances the book; a refresh setting affects how the display redraws after a turn. They are different controls. Kobo’s Reading Menu documentation covers page navigation, skimming, and onscreen controls, but does not establish a single page-refresh setting for every Kobo reader. See Kobo’s Reading Menu guide.

The Kindle Oasis User’s Guide describes an option in Reading Options to refresh the display on every page turn; its default minimizes refreshes. That is guidance for the Oasis model family covered by the guide, not a menu path to assume on every Kindle. If flashes during page turns bother you, check your exact model’s guide for a refresh option before changing it.

Check the file type if font controls do nothing

If the size and style controls do not change a document, check whether it is a PDF. Kobo explicitly says its reader cannot change PDF text size or style using those controls in its font adjustment instructions. PDFs often preserve a fixed page layout, so the reflowable-text adjustments described above may not be available in the same way.
