To improve indoor air quality, first reduce or remove pollution sources. Then bring in outdoor air when conditions are suitable, use filtration for particles, and control moisture at its source. These measures complement one another: a purifier or HVAC filter cannot remove every pollutant or fix a leak.
What should you do first to improve indoor air quality?
Start by identifying what may be adding pollutants: cooking, smoking, cleaning products, furnishings or building materials, combustion appliances, water leaks, or outdoor air entering the home. Where practical, remove the source or reduce its emissions. Use products as directed, and ventilate during activities that release pollutants when outdoor conditions allow.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes source control as usually the most effective approach to indoor air quality problems; ventilation and filtration are additional measures. People spend an average of 90 percent of their time indoors, according to the EPA’s July 2025 indoor air quality factsheet.

Outdoor air can dilute indoor pollutants. Open windows or doors when outdoor air is clean and the weather is comfortable. Use bathroom fans that exhaust outdoors during and after showers, and use an outdoor-vented range hood or fan while cooking. Install, operate, and maintain mechanical ventilation according to its instructions.

- WHY CHOOSE AHAM VERIFIDE AIR PURIFIERS: AHAM (Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers) is an ANSI-accredited organization that sets strict standards for appliance performance. Air purifiers with the AHAM VERIFIDE seal have been independently tested for air cleaning performance and energy efficiency. When you choose an AHAM certified air purifier, you're choosing a product trusted for reliable and effective indoor air quality improvement
- HIGH-PERFORMANCE AIR PURIFICATION: A powerful 56W high-torque motor and 143 CFM CADR delivers fast, effective cleaning. The Levoit Original Filter is HEPA-grade while operating in Sleep Mode (Based on IEST RP C001.7). Ideal for home, bedroom, or office
- AHAM VERIFIDE, PROVEN PERFORMANCE: AHAM VERIFIDE with a CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) rating of 143 CFM for smoke, 153 CFM for dust, and 167 CFM for pollen—refreshing air in a 222 ft² room 4.8 times per hour and a 1,073 ft² room once per hour
- GENUINE REPLACEMENT FILTERS: For the best performance and longest lifespan, use official Levoit filters designed specifically for Levoit air purifiers. Levoit replacement filters ensure the best fit and high-efficiency filtration, while off-brand filters may be unreliable and may damage your Levoit air purifier
- FIND COMFORT: Our filter has strong filtration performance of fine particles. 99.97% filtration efficiency for 0.1 to 0.3μm airborne particulates, including pollen, dust, and animal dander allergens. Tested by an independent lab
Ventilation is not always the right choice. Check local air quality and conditions first; avoid bringing outdoor air in when pollution or pollen is high, temperatures or humidity are extreme, or it is unsafe. In warm, humid climates, outdoor air can add moisture even if its relative humidity is lower than the indoor reading. EPA’s guidance on improving indoor air quality and mold and health explains these trade-offs.
Which filtration option fits your home?
A portable HEPA air purifier and a central HVAC filter serve different areas and have different sizing measures. Both are primarily particle-control options, not substitutes for source control or appropriate ventilation.

| Option | Area served and sizing | Maintenance and limits |
|---|---|---|
| Portable room air cleaner | A room or defined area. Match the clean air delivery rate (CADR) to the room area; larger CADR generally serves a larger space. EPA’s estimate for an eight-foot ceiling is 65 cfm minimum CADR for 100 sq ft, 130 for 200 sq ft, 195 for 300 sq ft, 260 for 400 sq ft, 325 for 500 sq ft, and 390 for 600 sq ft. | Use and replace filters as directed. Higher ceilings may require more CADR. CADR rates particle removal, not gas removal; gas-targeted media such as activated carbon may be needed for gases, and EPA says there is no widely used performance rating system for gas-removal filters. |
| Central furnace or HVAC filter | Areas served by the central system. EPA recommends MERV 13 or the highest efficiency the system can accommodate; check the equipment guidance or consult an HVAC technician if unsure. | It filters only while the system runs. Longer fan operation can raise energy costs and may impair humidity control during cooling. Replace or clean the filter on schedule; an overloaded filter works poorly. |
The CADR figures are EPA estimates, not guarantees for every room or purifier. Many portable cleaners achieve high CADR with HEPA filtration. EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models. Avoid air cleaners that intentionally generate ozone, which can irritate airways. See the EPA’s guide to air cleaners and filters for the home for details.

Choose filtration according to the pollutant and the area you want to treat. A portable unit can target particles in a room; a compatible HVAC filter treats air passing through the central system. EPA reports that studies of portable HEPA cleaners have found small improvements in some cardiovascular or respiratory outcomes and in some allergy or asthma symptoms, but effects are not always noticeable or consistent. That evidence does not establish that a particular model will improve an individual’s health.

“The key to mold control is moisture control,” the EPA says in Care for Your Air: A Guide to Indoor Air Quality. Fix plumbing leaks and water intrusion, dry wet materials thoroughly as soon as possible—ideally within 24–48 hours—and do not paint, seal, or enclose wet or visibly moldy material before addressing it.

- Air Quality Monitoring: This air purifier is designed with a built-in PM2.5 sensor and real-time display, eliminating the need for guesswork about air quality. In auto mode, when it detects a decline in air quality, the purifier with the indicator changing to green, blue, yellow or red, and the fan accelerating to purify the air more efficiently.
- Remarkable Filtration: Featuring an advanced filtration system, the air purifier effectively removes airborne particles (such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke ). When activated, this air cleaner can refresh the atmosphere in a space up to 2400 sq ft / 223 m² every 30 minutes, ensuring you enjoy a fresh and comfortable air quality throughout the day in your home or office. (Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
Keep indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A humidity gauge or hygrometer can help you monitor it. Use outdoor-vented bathroom and kitchen fans during moisture-generating activities. If humidity remains consistently above 60 percent, EPA says a dehumidification strategy may be needed, particularly in warm, humid conditions. A dehumidifier can reduce excess humidity, but it will not fix a leak or replace appropriate mold remediation. See the EPA’s brief guide to mold, moisture, and your home.

A practical order of operations
- Identify and reduce sources: Remove or limit the cause where practical, including smoke, emissions from products, or pollutants from cooking.
- Ventilate when outdoor conditions permit: Use open windows or outdoor-vented kitchen and bathroom exhaust to remove pollutants and moisture.
- Add filtration for particles: Size a portable cleaner by CADR and room area, or use MERV 13—or the highest compatible rating—in the central system.
- Find and correct moisture problems: Repair leaks, dry wet materials, monitor humidity, and use a dehumidifier if excess humidity persists.
