Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStart by making the in-book text large enough to follow comfortably, then adjust spacing, margins, alignment, orientation, and brightness to suit the page and your reading conditions. On Kindle, open the Aa or Page Display menu; on Kobo, tap the middle of the page to open the Reading menu. Options vary by model and book, so change one setting at a time and read a few pages before making another adjustment.
Make the text bigger or smaller first
Increase the font until the letters are comfortable to follow. Then check how much text remains visible and how often you need to turn the page. Larger text can make reading easier to track, but it also means fewer words per page. There is no single best font size for every reader, screen, or reading environment.

Try one change, read a few pages, and decide whether the result works before changing another control. This makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.

- Open the reading controls: Tap the top of the screen to reveal the toolbars, then select the Aa Page Display icon.
- Adjust the font: In the Font tab, choose a font and move the size slider or use the plus and minus controls. On supported books, pinching on the page is another way to change the size.
- Adjust weight if letters look too light: Kindle documents five boldness levels; try a heavier setting if it makes the text easier to distinguish.
- Refine the page: In Layout, adjust line, paragraph, word, and character spacing; margins; portrait or landscape orientation; and justified or left alignment.
- Save a preferred combination: Themes can save Font, Layout, and More preferences, as well as change the background color.
Amazon describes these controls for Kindle E-Readers 6th Generation and later, but notes that display settings vary by model. If a control is missing, check your device model and the book format rather than assuming the e-reader is faulty. See Amazon’s “Customize Your Kindle E-Reader Text Display” help page.

In-book text and device menus are separate
The Aa reading controls change text in the ebook. A separate device setting changes the Kindle’s interface text, such as text in menus. Amazon lists that device-level control for Kindle E-Readers 11th Generation and later, Kindle Scribe, and Kindle Colorsoft: Settings → Screen and brightness → Display & text size. The in-book text remains adjustable from the Aa reading toolbar. See Amazon’s “Enlarge the Font Size on Your Kindle E-Reader” help page.
Change text size and brightness on Kobo
- Open the Reading menu: While reading, tap the middle of the screen.
- Make the text bigger or smaller: Tap the Font icon, then drag the Font Size slider or use plus and minus.
- Adjust brightness where supported: While reading on an eReader with built-in lighting and the relevant control, swipe up or down along the left edge of the screen.
Kobo’s reading instructions and controls vary by model; not every eReader has the same light or menu options. Consult Kobo’s “Kobo eReader basics: Reading eBooks” guide for the documented steps.

Look for other comfort and accessibility options
Kobo lists adjustable fonts, including OpenDyslexic, as well as margins, line spacing, Dark Mode, ComfortLight Pro, and Large Print Mode among its accessibility-related features. Availability differs across models, so treat these as options to look for rather than settings every Kobo can use. Its overview also describes brightness and Natural Light options: Kobo’s accessibility features page.

Choose layout settings to match the text
When larger letters make a page feel crowded, try changing spacing or margins. These adjustments can make the page feel more open, but wider spacing and larger margins leave less text on each page and can mean more page turns.

- Line spacing: Increase it if lines feel cramped; decrease it if the gaps make the page harder to follow or reduce how much text fits.
- Margins: Narrower margins can fit more text across the page, while wider ones create more blank space around it.
- Alignment: Justified text creates straighter edges on both sides. Left alignment leaves a ragged right edge and may be more comfortable if the spacing between words looks uneven.
- Orientation: Landscape changes the line length and the shape of the page. Try it if portrait feels too narrow, then judge whether the longer lines are easier to track.
These are trade-offs, not universally better settings. The right combination is the one that lets you follow lines comfortably while keeping page turns and visible text at a level you find acceptable.
Set brightness for the room
Adjust brightness while looking at the page in the lighting where you actually read. The support guides describe where to find brightness controls, but do not establish a universally correct level. On Kobo, the left-edge swipe is documented for supported models; the exact light features vary. Some Kobo models also list Natural Light or ComfortLight Pro, but those options are not available on every device.

Why a setting may be missing or behave differently
Controls depend on both the e-reader and the book. Kindle’s help notes model variation, while Amazon’s Enhanced Typesetting description applies to reflowable Kindle books. For those books, the layout system can adapt to large fonts or short line lengths, including changing to left alignment or reducing a landscape two-column layout to one column. Amazon also describes hyphenation, word-spacing improvements, kerning, and dynamic color contrast for Enhanced Typesetting; do not assume those behaviors apply to every ebook or format. See Amazon KDP’s Enhanced Typesetting information.
If a control is absent, first check your model and whether the book is a reflowable ebook. A fixed-layout book or a device with a different feature set may not respond like the examples above.
