To run a science livestream with background music that never stops, build one OBS Studio scene with your camera or demonstration, your microphone, and a VLC Video source holding your music playlist with Loop Playlist turned on. Set the music below your voice in the Audio Mixer, make a test recording, paste your YouTube stream key, and go live. The stream continues only while OBS is running on a computer with a working internet connection, and the music you use must be licensed for live use, which YouTube checks automatically.
What you need before you start
- A computer with OBS Studio installed. Use the current release from the OBS Project website and keep it updated.
- A camera or capture device for the presenter, or a screen capture of the experiment. A webcam, a USB capture card fed by a camera, or a display capture all work in OBS.
- A microphone that OBS can see as an audio input. A USB microphone or a headset is enough to start; the equipment is a convenience, not a requirement.
- Your music as local audio files in a format OBS documents support for: MP3, AAC, OGG, or WAV. Only use tracks you have the right to play in a live broadcast (see the rights section below).
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. A channel that has never streamed may need to wait for YouTube to activate live features, which can take up to 24 hours after you first turn them on.
- A stable upload connection. As a planning figure, check that your upload speed comfortably exceeds the bitrate you plan to use, with headroom for other devices on the same network.
Step 1: Build the scene
A scene is the set of sources OBS composites into your broadcast. Keep the presenter, the visuals, and the music in one scene so nothing changes while you are live.

- In OBS, open Sources and click +. Choose Video Capture Device for a webcam or capture card, or Display Capture for a screen or experiment view. Position and crop it in the preview.
- Click + again and choose Audio Input Capture for your microphone. Name it clearly, such as “Presenter mic”.
- Click + and choose VLC Video Source. The OBS Sources Guide lists VLC integration as a way to add a playlist to a scene. Name it “Music playlist”.
- In the VLC source’s properties, add your files to the playlist with the + control. Arrange them in the order you want, or use a shuffled order prepared in advance.
- Confirm that Loop Playlist is enabled. OBS’s Media Sources guide documents this option, which restarts the list when it reaches the end; the documented default is On. Check it anyway, because a playlist that stops after its last track will leave a silent stream.
- Leave the VLC source visible in the scene you broadcast from. If you switch to a different scene that does not contain it, the music stops being part of that output. Use one broadcast scene and avoid switching away during a live session.
Step 2: Balance speech and music in the Audio Mixer
The Audio Mixer shows one channel for each audio source. You need the presenter and the playlist as separate channels so each can be adjusted on its own.
- Speak at your normal volume and watch the Presenter mic meter. Speech should move in the upper part of the meter without reaching the red clipping zone.
- Play the playlist and watch the Music playlist meter. OBS’s Audio Mixer guide recommends keeping background music in the green zone, so that it sits clearly under speech.
- If the music is too loud, lower its fader in the mixer. For finer control, open the menu (three dots) on the music channel and choose Advanced Audio Properties, then adjust the volume and confirm which tracks are routed to the stream.
- To hear what viewers hear, set Audio Monitoring for the music source to Monitor and Output in Advanced Audio Properties, and use headphones to avoid feedback.
The meters show levels, not clarity. Whether the voice stays intelligible over the music is something only a listening check confirms, which is why the test in Step 4 matters.
#1 Best Overall
- [Natural Audio Clarity] Operated with frequency response of 50Hz-16KHz, the podcasting XLR mic delivers balanced audio range, likely to resonate with your audience. Directional cardioid dynamic microphone corded will not exaggerate your voice, while rejects unwanted off-axis noise for vocal originality and intelligibility during your PS5 gaming streaming video recording. Get the desired level via monitoring volume control when gaming recording. Smooth mic gain knob on the PC microphone gaming has some resistance to the point, easily for audio attenuation or boost presence to less post-production audio. (Only available for USB connection)
Step 3: Set the stream and output options
Stream key and service
- In OBS, open Settings and choose Stream.
- Set Service to YouTube – RTMPS, and Server to Primary YouTube ingest server.
- In YouTube Studio, go to Create then Go live. Find the stream key on the stream settings screen, copy it, and paste it into the Stream Key field in OBS.
Treat the stream key like a password. Anyone who has it can send a stream to your channel. If it has been shared, reset it in YouTube Studio’s stream settings and paste the new key into OBS before your next broadcast.
Video: resolution, frame rate, and bitrate
Under Settings then Video, set the Base (Canvas) Resolution to match your camera layout, usually 1920 x 1080, and the Output (Scaled) Resolution to the same or a lower value. Set Common FPS Values to 30 for talk-led shows or 60 for fast motion or moving demonstrations. Higher frame rates need more bitrate and more upload bandwidth.

- [Mic Volume Knob] Gaming condenser USB mic compatible for PS4 with additional volume knob itself has a louder or quieter adjustment and is more sensitive. Your voice would be heard well enough through the zoom microphone USB when gaming, skyping or voice recording. Also, you can adjust your volume to zero and protect your privacy.
- [Widely Use] USB-powered design, the condenser microphone for recording no need the 48v Phantom power supply, works well with Cortana, Discord, voice chat and voice recognition. The podcast microphone for Mac, with USB-B to USB-A/C cable, is compatible with desktop, laptop or PS4/PS5, which meets most of your daily recording needs.
- [Clear Output Voice] Cardioid condenser microphone for PC captures your voice properly, producing clear smooth and crisp sound. Great computer recording mic for gamers/streamers/youtubers focus on the main source and reduces background noise. The streaming microphone does the job well for broadcast ,OBS and teamspeak.
Under Settings then Output (in advanced mode), set these values:
- Encoder: a hardware encoder such as NVENC or Apple VT if your machine offers it, which lowers CPU load; otherwise x264.
- Rate Control: CBR (constant bitrate), which gives YouTube a steady stream.
- Keyframe Interval: 2 seconds. Keyframes that are too far apart make the stream slow to recover after a dropout.
- Bitrate: see the table below.
| Output | Frame rate | Starting video bitrate (planning range) | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p | 30 fps | 2,500 to 4,000 Kbps | Slow connections, talk-only segments |
| 1080p | 30 fps | 4,500 to 6,000 Kbps | Standard talk and demonstration show |
| 1080p | 60 fps | 6,000 to 9,000 Kbps | Fast-moving experiments and live motion |
These ranges are starting points for planning, not fixed YouTube requirements. YouTube updates its live encoder recommendations over time, so compare them with the current guidance in YouTube Help before you settle on a value. Choose a bitrate your upload speed can sustain with spare capacity; if you cannot, a lower resolution at a steady bitrate gives a better result than a high bitrate that drops frames.

- Click Stop Recording, then open the file from the recording folder listed in Settings then Output.
- Listen on headphones and on a phone speaker. Check that your voice is clear over the music, that the music does not clip, and that the loop transition is not silent.
- Adjust the music fader and repeat if needed.
For a live rehearsal, go to YouTube Studio, create a broadcast with its visibility set to Private or Unlisted, click Start streaming in OBS, and check the preview in YouTube Studio for a few minutes before switching the broadcast to public.

Music rights for live streams and archives
Music is the part of a science livestream most likely to end a broadcast without warning, so set it up deliberately rather than assuming it is fine.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- A consumer music subscription, a purchased track, a public playlist, or a “royalty-free” label does not by itself give you permission to play music in a live broadcast. What matters is whether the license covers this specific use: live streaming, the archived video if you keep one, monetization, the territories you reach, and any attribution the license requires.
- YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. YouTube’s Help Center states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” (YouTube Help, “Copyright issues with live streams”)
- When a match is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder. If the content remains, the stream may be temporarily interrupted or terminated.
- Even licensed third-party music can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. For licensed content, YouTube directs the creator to ask the rights owner to add the channel to its allowlist.
- YouTube’s Audio Library music is royalty-free for use in YouTube videos. Creator Music usage details vary by track and can prohibit live streams, so check the terms for each individual track before you use it live.
Before you go live, check each track against its license for live use and for archive use. If a track is not cleared, remove it from the playlist for the live session rather than relying on the stream to survive.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Music stops after the last track | Loop Playlist is off | Open the VLC source properties and enable Loop Playlist. |
| Music is audible in OBS but silent on YouTube | The music channel is muted, or Audio Monitoring is set to Monitor Off | Unmute the music channel in the mixer; confirm the output setting in Advanced Audio Properties. |
| Music missing from the stream entirely | The VLC source is hidden or the scene was switched | Keep the VLC source visible in the broadcast scene and avoid changing scenes during the live session. |
| Voice buried under music | Music fader too high | Lower the music channel in the mixer and re-check the test recording. |
| Dropped frames in the OBS status bar | Upload bandwidth or CPU cannot sustain the bitrate | Lower the bitrate or resolution, switch to a hardware encoder, or close other uploads on the network. |
| YouTube reports the stream is not receiving data | Wrong stream key, wrong server, or OBS not started | Re-copy the stream key from YouTube Studio, confirm the service is YouTube – RTMPS, and click Start Streaming in OBS. |
| Stream replaced by a placeholder or interrupted with a copyright notice | A third-party content match was detected | Stop the stream, remove the track, and confirm licensing or allowlisting before the next session. |
| Stream stops when the laptop sleeps | The computer sleeps or the display locks into sleep mode | Disable sleep and display sleep for the session, and plug in the power adapter. |
| Recovery is slow after a dropout | Keyframe interval set too high | Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in Output settings. |
Keeping a home setup running
A computer-based livestream is only as reliable as the machine running it. OBS has to stay open, the computer has to stay on and awake, and the connection has to keep its upload speed for the full length of the broadcast. Schedule updates for times when you are not live, keep the stream key handy for re-entry, and expect to restart manually if the computer or internet fails. For long sessions, a home power cut or a router restart ends the broadcast unless you are there to restart it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the OBS setup above is more than you need for a show that plays pre-recorded material on a loop, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live 24/7 from uploaded videos. It loops and plays playlists from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. It does not go live from a camera, so a live presenter or live demonstration still needs the setup described above. It streams to YouTube only.
- Upload your recording or build a playlist of your science episodes and music bed.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live. The stream then runs from the cloud.
- Nothing has to stay on at home.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode and no quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, one free day per account.
- Monthly plan: $9.99 per month. Daily, weekly, 6-month, and yearly plans are also available, and only the length changes.
The same music-rights rules apply to cloud streams, so clear every track for live use before you upload it. Start your free day at app.streamneo.com/register, with no card required.
