The count depends on which Spartan program you mean, which stage of recruitment or augmentation you are counting, and which point in the story you are describing. The official Halo sources give useful figures for SPARTAN-II, but they do not add up to a current, franchise-wide roster, and some Spartan statuses have never been published.
Why one total does not exist
Halo’s official definition does not describe a single group. The Halo Encyclopedia glossary, reproduced on Halo Waypoint, defines a Spartan as “a genetically enhanced and cybernetically armored human super-soldier of one of four military projects” (Halo Waypoint, “The New Halo Encyclopedia Is Out Today”). Any answer therefore has to say which project it covers. The official articles compare SPARTAN-II, SPARTAN-III and SPARTAN-IV, and each program has its own intake, its own timeline and its own fate for its members.

A number also changes meaning depending on the stage it measures. A count of candidates selected for recruitment is not a count of people who completed augmentation, and neither is a count of people alive at a particular moment in the fiction. Most confusion online comes from treating these stages as one population.
What the official SPARTAN-II figures establish
The most detailed official figures concern SPARTAN-II, the first program. They come from Halo Waypoint’s “Canon Fodder: Heart and Soell” (Halo Waypoint, “Canon Fodder: Heart and Soell”). Each figure below is scoped to one stage:

- Fully articulated 6.5" action figure Figures are fully articulated for different positions and play with.
- Halo accessories: includes interchangeable weapons and hands.
- OFFICIALLY LICENSED PRODUCT - Officially licensed Halo toy by Wicked Cool Toys, a Jazwares Company.
Selection and recruitment
- 150 candidates were selected for SPARTAN-II.
- 75 of those candidates were taken to Reach. This is a recruitment-stage figure. It is not a count of all SPARTAN-II members.
Augmentation and rehabilitation
- 33 SPARTAN-II survivors of augmentation are consolidated in the official roster discussion.
- 23 candidates died during augmentation.
- 12 washouts were rehabilitated and became Spartans.
The same official discussion lists other fates and states that the accounting has complications. Do not treat the 33 survivors as a current living total. They describe a point in the story’s accounting, not the state of the program at every later date.
The Laconia Station losses
A separate official article, “Canon Fodder: Eklund’s Ensemble,” describes a fictional event rather than a census. It says that at least 76 Spartans who opposed Cortana’s rule were lost when Laconia Station was destroyed, and that a new generation of SPARTAN-IV recruits was deployed afterward (Halo Waypoint, “Canon Fodder: Eklund’s Ensemble”). The figure is explicitly a minimum (“at least”), and it covers one event and one group. It is not the total number of Spartan deaths, and it does not tell you how many Spartans remained afterward.

Why official sources cannot give a full status list
The Halo Encyclopedia is the most complete official reference for Halo lore, and it was created with Dark Horse (Halo Waypoint, “The New Halo Encyclopedia Is Out Today”). Even so, it does not publish a complete Spartan status list. In “Canon Fodder: Encyclopedia Extravaganza,” 343 Industries explained the decision: “Apart from the space limitations already mentioned, we also had to make the best decision for what content we wanted to reveal at this point in our franchise’s storytelling” (Halo Waypoint, “Canon Fodder: Encyclopedia Extravaganza”). The statement is not attributed to a named individual, so it should be cited as 343 Industries’ position.
In practical terms, a reader can confirm the SPARTAN-II stage figures above, can confirm the Laconia event, and can confirm the four-project definition. Beyond that, a status for an individual Spartan or a total for the whole franchise is not something the official sources establish.

How to phrase an accurate answer
If you need a short answer, say that the number depends on the program and timeline being counted. If you have room for one more sentence, add the most specific figure that matches the question:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- For how many SPARTAN-II candidates were chosen: 150, with 75 taken to Reach.
- For how many SPARTAN-II members survived augmentation: 33, according to the official roster discussion, which notes complications in the accounting.
- For how many Spartans were lost in one battle: at least 76 at Laconia Station, in the fictional event described by Halo Waypoint.
- For a franchise-wide total of living Spartans: no official figure is established.
Keeping these scopes separate avoids the most common error, which is adding the recruitment, augmentation and rehabilitation numbers into a single population.

Further reading on Halo lore
For readers who want more background, the official Halo book guide covers the franchise’s published books and wider context (Halo Waypoint, “Official Halo Book Guide”). Treat the Halo Encyclopedia as a reference for lore and definitions, not as a source for a definitive current Spartan count.
