How to Make a Radio Stream Sound Consistent When YouTube Changes Volume

A practical guide to diagnosing YouTube playback changes and keeping a radio stream consistent with measured, restrained station-side processing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First find out whether the volume change is in your station’s feed or only in YouTube playback. Measure the station output with a loudness meter, correct inconsistent programme levels upstream, and use restrained real-time loudness control with peak limiting for live audio. YouTube also offers viewer-side audio enhancements, so changing your station’s processing before checking the player settings can make the original problem worse.

Find out where the volume change happens

Compare the audio at three points: the programme or source, the station’s processed output, and the YouTube player. If the source and processed output are steady but YouTube sounds different, investigate playback-side settings before changing the station chain. YouTube confirms that some videos may receive volume adjustments and other audio enhancements, but it does not document one universal loudness target or the exact processing applied to every video.

  1. Listen to the source and the station output. If you can, monitor the feed before and after your station’s processing or encoder. Note whether the change is already present before the signal reaches YouTube.
  2. Check YouTube playback settings. In the player, open Settings and inspect Stable volume and Voice boost when those options are available. Compare playback with Stable volume off; if Voice boost is on, note that it turns Stable volume off.
  3. Match listening levels. Compare source and YouTube playback at similar perceived volume. A louder comparison can seem clearer or fuller even when the underlying balance has not improved.
  4. Change one layer at a time. If the station output itself varies, address the station chain. If the difference appears only in YouTube playback, do not compensate by blindly raising or compressing the source.

YouTube says Stable volume is on by default for videos where the feature is available; it is not available on every video and is turned off for YouTube Music and official music videos. Viewers can toggle it in player settings. YouTube’s audio enhancements guidance also describes automatic volume and sound-mixing adjustments, and Voice boost, which can reduce background sound and highlight speech. Enhancements do not apply to every video. Channel owners can manage whether enhancements apply to future uploads in YouTube Studio; that setting does not affect ads or videos already uploaded, and viewer accessibility settings may take precedence.

Measure loudness, dynamics and peaks separately

Peaks alone do not tell you whether a radio programme sounds consistently loud. Use a meter that reports integrated loudness and true peak; keep loudness range in view when preserving the contrast between speech, music and other elements matters. These measurements answer different questions: integrated loudness describes average programme level, loudness range helps describe its dynamics, and true peak helps identify potential overloads.

For a broadcast reference, EBU R 128 version 5.0 (November 2023) recommends an average programme loudness of -23 LUFS and the use of Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. That is an EBU broadcast recommendation, not a documented universal YouTube target. The EBU’s R 128 S2 guidance for streaming treats streaming as a distinct delivery context and notes that streaming platforms typically use a higher target loudness than broadcast standards. Choose a target appropriate to your station, market and distribution requirements rather than assuming one number suits broadcast and every online platform.

EBU TECH 3401 version 2.0 (November 2023) addresses loudness normalization and level control across radio production and distribution workflows, including metering, FM, Internet streaming, DAB and media players. For broader Internet audio delivery considerations, AES AESTD1008 version 1.21-9, published 24 September 2021, covers loudness normalization, dynamic range management, metadata, peak control and playback.

Correct the station feed without flattening the programme

Normalize recorded material before it goes live

When the programme is assembled from recordings, align source material and transitions before transmission. Check speech, music, jingles, adverts and other elements as a sequence, not just as separate files: abrupt differences often become most obvious at handoffs. A consistent average level is useful, but retain intentional changes in loudness and dynamics rather than making every moment equally loud.

Use real-time correction carefully for live audio

Live feeds cannot generally be normalized in advance as a completed file can. Real-time loudness-correction hardware or software can reduce drift, but it cannot predict what is coming next and may override an intentional change in programme loudness. The Audio Engineering Society describes an analysis period of 30 seconds to two minutes as a typical balance between average-level control and natural dynamics; longer integration tends to sound more natural, with fewer audible artifacts. Treat that as guidance, not a universal setting: the right response depends on the material and how quickly its level changes.

An audio compressor limiter can be part of a live control chain, but it is not a substitute for loudness measurement or careful setup. Compression changes dynamic range; limiting helps control peaks after gain is applied. Use both only as needed, and listen for pumping, unnatural changes in speech or music, and transitions that have lost their intended contrast.

Protect true peaks after applying gain

Any gain applied by normalization or real-time correction can raise peaks as well as average level. Use appropriate peak control, then verify the result with a true-peak meter. Keep loudness and maximum true peak as separate checks; meeting an average loudness figure does not by itself guarantee peak safety.

A practical setup and listening checklist

  1. Choose the delivery context. Decide which broadcast or streaming requirements apply to your station and audience. Use EBU R 128 as a broadcast reference when appropriate, not as a YouTube specification.
  2. Meter the complete programme. Record integrated loudness and true peak, and review loudness range if dynamics matter. Include representative speech, music, jingles, adverts and transitions.
  3. Locate the inconsistent stage. Compare the source, processed or encoded station output, and YouTube playback. Use the same material and matched listening levels.
  4. Fix the earliest source-side inconsistency. Align source material, transitions and levels in the station chain before adding stronger downstream correction.
  5. Set live correction conservatively. If needed, use real-time loudness control with an analysis period suited to the programme. Monitor whether it overrides intended changes or produces audible artifacts.
  6. Check peaks after correction. Apply appropriate peak limiting where gain is being added, then verify true peaks at the output.
  7. Recheck the whole listening experience. Listen across programme changes and in YouTube with relevant audio settings noted. Adjust the station chain only for problems present in that chain.

Troubleshoot the common causes

What you hear Likely place to investigate What to do
Volume jumps between songs, speech and jingles in the station output Uneven source levels or transitions upstream Measure representative material and align levels at the source or in the station production chain before increasing real-time correction.
The station output sounds steady, but YouTube playback does not YouTube player-side audio enhancements or a different listening comparison Check Stable volume and Voice boost when available, and compare at matched listening levels. Avoid compensating in the station chain until the source and output have been checked.
Speech becomes unnaturally prominent or background audio changes Voice boost or aggressive dynamic processing Check whether Voice boost is active in the player. On the station side, reduce or reassess processing that is changing intended dynamics.
The stream sounds crushed, pumps, or loses contrast Real-time correction acting too quickly or too strongly Use a more conservative correction approach and review the analysis period. Listen through programme transitions, where pumping and flattened dynamics are easiest to notice.
Peaks distort after loudness correction Gain increase without sufficient peak control Check true peak after gain is applied, use appropriate limiting, and verify the final output rather than relying on an integrated loudness reading alone.
A YouTube setting is missing or has no apparent effect Feature availability varies by video and viewer settings Compare another eligible video if possible. Stable volume is not available on every video; YouTube says Voice boost is also unavailable for some videos.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the radio stream is built from uploaded recordings or a playlist and should keep playing on YouTube around the clock, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
