A 403 means a server understood a request but refused it; it does not, by itself, tell you why. First establish whether the screenshot API returned the 403, or whether it successfully returned an image showing a 403 page from the target website. Then check the request’s authentication format, account permissions and provider-specific policies before trying again.
First find out which request returned 403
A screenshot workflow involves at least two different servers: the screenshot API you call and the website it visits. A 403 can come from the API endpoint, a proxy or gateway in front of it, or the target website whose page was captured. Those cases need different fixes.
- Record the API exchange. Note the exact host and path, HTTP method, status, response headers, content type, response body, timestamp and any provider request ID. Redact API keys from URLs and logs.
- Check whether the response is an image. If the API returned a successful image response, open the image and inspect what it depicts. A forbidden page rendered by the target site is not the same as the screenshot API refusing your call.
- Do not trust the file extension alone. An error response saved as
.pngor.jpgis still an error response. Check the status and content type before treating the body as an image.
Providers do not all use the same error format or map the same account condition to the same status. Read the body and the provider’s documentation for the endpoint you called; do not assume every error is JSON or that every 403 has one universal cause.
For HTTP semantics, RFC 9110 defines 403 as a refusal to fulfill a request the server understood. It distinguishes 401, generally used when valid authentication credentials for the resource are missing or absent, from 403, which can mean the credentials are inadequate—or that refusal is for an unrelated reason. RFC 9110, section 15.5.4.

Check the API request and credentials
Compare your call with the current documentation for the exact provider, endpoint, API version and HTTP method. Authentication placement is provider-specific: a key in a query parameter is not necessarily interchangeable with an Authorization header, and a GET endpoint may not accept the same credential format as a POST endpoint.
- Confirm the host, path, method and API version are correct for the operation.
- Check that the target URL is well-formed and all required parameters are present.
- Verify the key is active and belongs to the intended account or project.
- Use the exact documented header name, authentication scheme or query parameter for that endpoint.
- Look for accidental whitespace, truncation, stale environment variables, or a key from a different project.
For example, ScreenshotEngine documents Bearer authentication in the header for its POST endpoint, while its GET endpoint requires an api_key query parameter; a Bearer header alone does not satisfy that GET schema. Check account access, quota and restrictions
Inspect the provider dashboard and the full error body for account or policy issues. Depending on the service, a refusal can reflect an inactive or suspended subscription, an expired trial, a billing balance, exhausted usage, insufficient project permissions, API restrictions, or an origin or source-IP rule.
- Confirm the account, subscription and billing status are current.
- Check usage limits and whether the project or key has the necessary permissions.
- Review any configured API restrictions, allowed origins, source-IP allowlists or network rules.
- If the call works locally but fails in deployment, check the deployed environment’s outbound IP and network policy against the provider’s requirements.
Status codes vary by vendor even for similar conditions. ScreenshotAPI.net documents quota, trial and account-related cases that may return 403; ScreenshotEngine documents monthly quota exhaustion as 429. If the captured page itself shows 403
If the screenshot API call succeeded and the returned image depicts a forbidden page, your API key has authenticated you to the screenshot service; it does not automatically sign the renderer into a separate target website. The target may require a login, reject the renderer’s traffic, or restrict access by location or other policy. Check the target URL in a normal browser and investigate the target site’s own access requirements.
Use only access methods you are authorized to use. If the target requires cookies or authorization headers, verify that your screenshot provider supports passing them to the rendered page and follow that provider’s documentation. Support varies: ScreenshotEngine says its documented capture endpoint accepts a public URL and does not expose custom cookies or target-site authorization headers in that endpoint. That limitation is specific to its documented endpoint, not all screenshot APIs.

Retry only after changing a relevant condition
A 403 is a refusal, not normally a signal to repeat the identical request as if it were a transient rate limit. RFC 9110 says a client should not automatically repeat a 403 using the same credentials. Correct the suspected cause first—for example, use the right key format, restore account access, adjust an authorized restriction, or fix the target-site access method—then make one controlled request.
If the corrected request is still refused, contact the provider with the method, endpoint, timestamp, status, response body, request ID and non-secret options. Remove API keys from headers, query strings, source code and logs before sharing diagnostics. Follow the provider’s documented retry guidance if the response is instead a 429 or 503.
