How to Make a Private YouTube Live Stream

Make a YouTube livestream private in Studio, invite viewers using their signed-in Google accounts, and check the replay’s visibility afterward.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make a YouTube live stream private, open YouTube Studio, create or schedule a stream, set its visibility to Private, then invite viewers using the Google accounts they will use to watch. They must open the stream link while signed in to an invited account; the link alone does not give an uninvited person access.

Choose the right visibility before you go live

YouTube’s visibility options control access in different ways. Choose based on whether you want to admit named people, anyone with a link, or channel members.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Setting Who can watch Sign-in and sharing Discoverability and use
Private The channel owner and people specifically invited. Viewers need the stream link and must sign in to the Google/YouTube account invited. Forwarding the link does not invite another account. Best for a small, named audience. Private content does not appear on the channel homepage.
Unlisted Anyone who has the link. Individual invitations are not required; a viewer can pass the link to others. Does not appear in YouTube search or the channel’s Videos tab. Convenient, but link possession is not a controlled invitation.
Members only Eligible paid members of the channel, optionally restricted to selected membership levels. Access depends on channel membership eligibility, not an invitation to a named Google account. Use for a member benefit if the channel has this option. It is separate from a Private stream.

YouTube documents Private and Unlisted video access in its privacy settings help and explains members-only streams here.

Check that your channel can livestream

YouTube’s general livestreaming requirements include a verified channel, no livestreaming restrictions during the prior 90 days, and a creator who is at least 16 years old. Review the current YouTube livestreaming eligibility guidance because requirements and interface labels can change.

Mobile livestreaming has additional requirements: the channel must be verified, have no restrictions in the previous 90 days, have livestreaming enabled, and have at least 50 subscribers. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. It may limit mobile audiences for channels with fewer than 1,000 subscribers; mobile archives for those channels may default to Private. See YouTube’s mobile livestream instructions.

  1. Open Live Control Room. Sign in to YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live.
  2. Create or schedule the stream. Open Stream to create a stream now, or choose Manage > Schedule stream to set one up for later.
  3. Set visibility to Private. In the stream’s settings, choose Private. Confirm the setting before you start sending the feed.
  4. Copy the connection details. Copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s server/URL and stream-key fields. YouTube describes the stream key as similar to a password, so do not share it publicly or send it to viewers. Use the official encoder setup instructions if you need help locating the fields.
  5. Start the encoder feed. Check Live Control Room as the stream connects, then confirm the watch page is working.
  6. Invite viewers. Use YouTube’s private-sharing controls to invite the email accounts your viewers will use. Send each person the specific watch link and tell them to sign in to the invited account.

Start a private stream with a webcam

If you are streaming directly through a computer webcam, open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go live > Webcam. Enter the stream details, choose Private for visibility, select the webcam and microphone, then start the stream. You do not need to buy a separate webcam if your computer already has one or if you are using another documented camera setup. See YouTube’s webcam livestream guide.

Invite viewers and fix access problems

A private stream is restricted by the invited account, not just by possession of the link. If someone cannot watch, work through these checks:

  • Full HD 1080p video calling and recording at 30 fps. You'll make a strong impression with this PC webcam that features crisp, clearly detailed, and vibrantly colored video
  • Open the exact watch link. Private streams do not appear on the channel homepage, so viewers should not rely on finding the stream there.
  • Check the signed-in account. Ask the viewer to confirm they are signed in to the same Google/YouTube account whose email received the invitation. People with multiple Google accounts can be signed in to the wrong one.
  • Verify the invitation. In the private-sharing controls, confirm that the intended email/account is included and spelled correctly. If necessary, invite the correct account and resend the stream link.
  • Do not switch to Unlisted just to fix an invitation error unless link sharing is acceptable. Anyone who receives an Unlisted link can pass it on.

Check the replay after the stream

After ending the broadcast, open YouTube Studio’s Content > Live area and check the replay’s visibility separately. Streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep a local recording if the broadcast must be preserved, and verify that the archive has the intended privacy setting; YouTube lets you change the replay to Private in Studio. Details are in YouTube’s archive guidance.
