To show the whole photo, place it on a portrait canvas with the proportions of your iPhone screen, then set that finished image as your wallpaper. The canvas fills the space around the photo with margins—such as a solid color or a blurred enlargement—so the original can stay uncropped. If you only need to adjust the framing, try the Lock Screen’s pinch and drag controls first.
Why the whole photo may not fit edge to edge
A photo and an iPhone display may have different proportions. Filling the screen edge to edge can therefore cut off part of the image; showing every edge may leave space around it. Pinch and drag can change the framing, but they cannot make mismatched proportions identical. Apple’s cited guides do not describe a universal “fit without cropping” switch or prescribe one pixel size for every iPhone.

The canvas approach is the one to use when preserving the whole composition matters most. Its dimensions are a general image-layout choice, not a setting Apple specifies; screen proportions vary by iPhone model.

Make a new image with the whole photo visible
- Duplicate the photo. Work from a copy so the original in your library remains unchanged.
- Create a portrait canvas in an image editor. Use proportions close to your iPhone display. Apple’s guides do not give a universal pixel dimension, so avoid treating one exact size as suitable for every model.
- Fit the photo inside without stretching it. Keep all four edges visible. Fill any remaining canvas area with a solid color, a blurred enlargement of the photo, or another background you choose.
- Save the layout as a new image. Select this prepared copy when you set the wallpaper.
Set the prepared image as your Lock Screen wallpaper
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper, then choose Photos and select the prepared image. Apple documents this wallpaper setup path and also offers Photo Shuffle as a separate choice; see Apple’s wallpaper instructions.
- In Lock Screen customization, adjust the framing if needed. Apple says to pinch open to zoom in, drag with two fingers to reposition the photo, and pinch closed to zoom out. See the iPhone User Guide.
- Check the preview, including the clock, widgets, and placement of the subject. Tap Add or Done to finish. Depending on the screen, you can set a wallpaper pair or customize the Home Screen.
Apple’s current interface can vary by iOS version and device. If you do not see an option described here, your software or model may differ.

If you only need to reposition the photo
Before editing a separate canvas, try adjusting the image in Lock Screen customization: use pinch to change zoom and drag with two fingers to move the photo. This may be enough to keep an important subject in view. If you need every edge of a differently shaped original visible, use the prepared-canvas method instead; the added background is what preserves the whole image while filling the display.
