For a PDF using Firefox’s documented workflow, open the page in Firefox, choose Print…, select Save to PDF, adjust the print settings, and save.
Can Firefox headless save a webpage as PDF directly?
Not through a PDF-printing option documented in Mozilla’s current command-line reference. That reference defines --headless as running Firefox without a GUI and separately documents --screenshot [path] for saving a screenshot. The screenshot option implies headless mode, but its output is an image, not a PDF. See Mozilla’s command-line reference.

Save a webpage as PDF in Firefox
- Open the webpage in Firefox.
- Open the browser menu and choose Print….
- In print preview, select Save to PDF from the destination dropdown.
- Set the page range and layout options you need, then click Print and choose where to save the file.
This workflow uses Firefox’s print preview, not headless mode. Mozilla’s instructions are in How to print web pages in Firefox.

Settings that affect the PDF
- Orientation, paper size, scale, and margins: adjust these to control fit and whitespace.
- Pages: print all pages or specify a page range.
- Pages per sheet: fit multiple document pages onto each printed sheet.
- Headers and footers: include or omit page details.
- Backgrounds: choose whether to print background colors and images. Background printing is unavailable when simplified format is selected.
Check the preview before saving: a site can use different styling for print than for the screen, so content and layout may change.
Use simplified formatting when available
Firefox’s Simplified print format can remove clutter such as buttons, advertisements, and background images. Its availability depends on whether the page has a simplified version; the setting is also unavailable if Reader View is already enabled. When Firefox’s screenshot option is enough
If you need an image rather than a document with printable pages, Firefox documents --screenshot [path]. Mozilla says this option implies headless mode. It is not a substitute for PDF export when you need page ranges, paper size, margins, or a paginated document. Check the command-line reference and your local firefox --help output for the syntax available in your build and platform.

Troubleshooting
“Unknown option” or no PDF output from a command
Do not assume --headless means PDF export: it only indicates that Firefox runs without a GUI. Consult Mozilla’s command-line reference and run firefox --help for options supported by your local build.
The screenshot is an image, not a PDF
--screenshot is documented for screenshot output. Use Firefox’s print preview and Save to PDF for a PDF through the documented Firefox workflow.

The saved PDF looks different from the webpage
Webpages can use print-specific styles. Review print preview and adjust scale, orientation, paper size, margins, and background printing. Try simplified format if the page offers it and the setting is available.
Why the PDF-printing CLI question comes up
Mozilla Bugzilla issue 1407238 is titled “Cli argument for print page or generate pdf command in Firefox headless mode.” It provides historical context for a request, not proof of feature availability or status in every later Firefox build.

Does Firefox’s `–headless` option itself export a PDF?
