How to Make a Minecraft 1.20 Server (Java Edition): Complete Setup and Port-Forwarding Guide

A complete Minecraft Java 1.20 server guide covering the official JAR, Java compatibility, first launch, EULA acceptance, server.properties, LAN and internet connections, port forwarding, security, backups, and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can make a Minecraft 1.20 Java Edition server at home with the free official server JAR, a compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE), and a folder where the server can store its files. The first launch creates the configuration and world files, then stops until you accept the EULA. After that, configure server.properties, allow the server through your computer’s firewall, and choose the correct connection address: localhost for the host, a private LAN address for people in the same home, or your public IP plus a forwarded port for friends elsewhere.

What you need before starting

This guide is for a self-hosted Minecraft Java Edition 1.20 server. It does not create a Bedrock server, and a Java server cannot be joined by Java players running a different game version unless a compatible bridging setup is used. Decide the exact 1.20 build first; “1.20” is a release family, while the JAR filename identifies the build you will actually run.

  • A computer that can remain on while people play.
  • The official Minecraft Java server JAR for the exact 1.20 build you intend to use. The software is free to download.
  • A compatible Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Compatibility depends on the selected JAR, so check that build’s requirement rather than assuming one Java major version works for every 1.20 file.
  • Administrator access to install Java, create firewall rules, and change your router if players will connect over the internet.
  • A wired or reliable wireless connection if possible, plus enough free disk space for the world, logs, and backups.

The official server software does not promise a fixed player count, universal RAM amount, or uptime figure. Performance depends on CPU speed, available memory, storage, simulation and view distances, world activity, and whether you add mods or plugins.

Download the exact 1.20 server JAR

Choose Java Edition and the intended build

Use Minecraft’s official server-download page and select the Java server file that matches the client release your group will play. Minecraft 1.20 is the Trails & Tales release, but you still need the precise point release represented by the JAR name. Keep that filename; it will be used in every launch command.

Do not rename a file in a way that hides its extension. On Windows, enable “File name extensions” in File Explorer if necessary so you can distinguish .jar from a similarly named download. Save the file locally rather than running it directly from a browser’s download folder.

Install and verify Java

Install a compatible JRE

The official download guidance requires a compatible JRE to launch a Java server JAR. The correct Java major version is tied to the exact server build; there is no single version stated as universal for every 1.20 JAR. Install a current JRE that the selected file supports, then verify it from a terminal or command prompt:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
java -version

The command should print a version instead of an error. If it reports an older or incompatible runtime, install the required JRE and open a new terminal so the updated PATH is loaded.

Fix “java is not recognized”

On Windows, that message normally means Java is not installed or its executable is missing from PATH. Reinstall the compatible JRE with its PATH option enabled, or add the JRE’s bin directory to the system PATH, then run java -version again. On macOS or Linux, use the package manager or JRE installer appropriate to your system and confirm that the shell resolves the intended Java executable.

Create a dedicated server folder

Make a folder with a simple name such as Minecraft Server. Copy the downloaded JAR into it. The folder will eventually contain the world directory, server.properties, eula.txt, logs, and other generated files, so keeping everything together makes backups and upgrades much safer.

Avoid placing the server inside a cloud-synchronised folder while it is running; simultaneous file synchronisation can lock or overwrite world files. Give the folder a location that your account can read and write without repeated permission prompts.

Run the server once to generate its files

Open a terminal in the folder

Open Command Prompt or PowerShell on Windows, Terminal on macOS, or a shell on Linux. Change to the folder containing the JAR. You can also open a terminal from the folder’s context menu where the operating system provides that option.

Launch without a graphical window

Replace the filename below with the exact name you downloaded:

java -jar minecraft_server.1.20.x.jar nogui

The first run may report that properties or eula.txt could not be loaded. That is expected: the server is creating its initial files. It may stop after writing them, or remain at a prompt depending on the build and environment.

If the command says the JAR cannot be found, list the folder contents and correct the filename, including capitalization and punctuation. If it throws a Java version error, return to the compatibility check instead of repeatedly launching the same runtime.

Accept the EULA before the server can run

Stop the process if it is still active, then open the generated eula.txt in a plain-text editor. Change the line:

eula=false

to:

eula=true

Save the file without adding quotation marks or extra spaces. Starting the server after this change means you agree to the applicable Minecraft End User License Agreement. If the server continues to stop with an EULA message, check that you edited the eula.txt in the same folder as the JAR and that the file was actually saved.

Configure server.properties

Run the server once after accepting the EULA so it can create server.properties, then stop it cleanly before editing. Open that file with a plain-text editor. Each setting is written as name=value; do not add spaces around the equals sign unless the file already uses them.

Setting What it controls Practical guidance
server-port The TCP port used by the server. The Java default is 25565. If you change it, use the same value in the firewall rule, router forwarding rule, and connection address.
gamemode The default game mode. Use the mode supported by the selected build: survival, creative, adventure, or spectator.
difficulty World difficulty. Choose peaceful, easy, normal, or hard according to your group.
pvp Whether players can damage one another. Set deliberately for cooperative or competitive play.
max-players The connection cap. Set a conservative value and raise it only if the host remains responsive under real use; no universal capacity is guaranteed.
level-seed The optional world-generation seed. Leave it blank for a random seed or enter a chosen seed before the world is created.
motd The message shown in the multiplayer server list. Keep it short enough to identify the server and any important house rules.
spawn-protection The protected radius around the world spawn. Choose a radius that protects shared infrastructure without blocking normal building.
allow-nether Whether players can enter the Nether. Set it according to the type of world you want to run.
server-ip The local interface to which the server binds. Leave it blank unless you have a specific multi-interface or binding requirement.

Save the file, then restart the server. A property change normally takes effect on the next start; changing a file while the process is running can be overwritten when the server shuts down.

Start the server with an explicit memory setting

After configuration, launch the same JAR again. This example sets both the initial and maximum Java heap to 2 GB:

java -Xms2G -Xmx2G -jar minecraft_server.1.20.x.jar nogui

The 2 GB values are an example, not an official requirement or a guarantee for a particular player count. Leave enough memory for the operating system and other applications, and adjust only after observing CPU, memory, storage, and tick performance. Large values can make the computer less responsive if they leave the operating system without sufficient memory.

Keep the terminal window open while the server is running. To stop safely, enter stop in the server console and wait for the save to complete; closing the window or killing the process can risk world corruption.

Connect from the host and your home network

Host computer

In Minecraft Java Edition, open Multiplayer, choose Add Server, and enter localhost as the address. This tests the server on the same computer without involving your router.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Another device on the same LAN

Find the host’s private LAN address, such as an address in the 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, or 172.16.x.x–172.31.x.x ranges. A friend on the same home network enters that private address and the configured port. If the port is the default, the address can be written as 192.168.1.20:25565; if the client accepts the default automatically, the suffix may be omitted.

Allow Java or the configured TCP port through the host operating system’s firewall when prompted. Test locally before attempting internet access: if localhost works but another LAN device cannot connect, the likely causes are a firewall rule, the wrong private address, wireless client isolation, or a server bound to an unintended interface.

Let friends connect over the internet

Give the host a stable private address

Your router must always forward the server port to the correct computer. Use a DHCP reservation in the router, or configure a carefully chosen static private address that does not conflict with the router’s DHCP range. Record the host address because it is needed in the forwarding rule.

  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!

Create the port-forwarding rule

Sign in to the router and find its Port Forwarding, Virtual Server, or NAT section. Menus differ by manufacturer, so follow the router’s own documentation for the exact screens. Create a rule that forwards the server’s TCP port—25565 by default—from the router’s internet-facing interface to the host’s private LAN address and the same local port.

If you changed server-port, forward that new value instead. A mismatch between the property, router rule, and firewall rule will prevent remote connections even though the server appears healthy locally.

Allow the port through the host firewall

Add an inbound firewall rule for Java or for the selected TCP port. Restrict the rule to the needed network profiles when your operating system offers that choice. Do not disable the firewall entirely as a shortcut.

Give friends the correct address

Find the home’s current public IPv4 address from the router’s status page or a trusted network-status service. A remote player enters that address followed by the port, for example 203.0.113.40:25565 when the default port is used. The example address is documentation-only; send your actual address privately to the people you trust.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A public home IP reveals a network endpoint and can attract unwanted connection attempts. The official setup guidance treats public disclosure as a security risk. Do not post it in a public chat, forum, livestream description, or social profile. Share it only with trusted players, and consider a private access method or managed hosting if you do not want to expose or administer your home network.

Test in a controlled order

  1. Start the server and confirm that it reaches a ready state without an EULA or Java error.
  2. Join from the host with localhost.
  3. Join from a second device on the same LAN using the host’s private address.
  4. From a different network, have one trusted friend test the public address and port.
  5. Only after those tests succeed, invite additional players and increase max-players if the computer remains stable.

Testing from inside the same network with your public address can fail on routers that do not support NAT loopback, even when outside players can connect. Use a genuinely separate network for the internet test.

Back up and maintain the world

Make backups with the server stopped

Use stop in the console, then copy the world directory and the configuration files to storage separate from the live server. Include server.properties, eula.txt, and any permissions or operator files you rely on. A backup made while chunks are actively saving may be incomplete.

Update deliberately

Keep the original JAR and world backup before testing a new build. A 1.20 point release can change behavior or require a different Java runtime. Replace the JAR only when every player is ready to use the matching client version, and keep the filename in your launch script synchronized with the file on disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Protect access

Give operator privileges only to people who need them. Review the console and logs for unexpected login attempts, avoid sharing the public IP broadly, and remove players you no longer trust. If your group needs stronger isolation than a home port can provide, managed hosting or a private network overlay may reduce router administration, but those options introduce recurring costs and provider-specific terms.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The command says “java” is not recognized

Install a JRE compatible with the exact server JAR, ensure its executable is on PATH, open a new terminal, and rerun java -version. If multiple Java installations exist, remove the ambiguity by calling the intended executable directly or correcting PATH order.

The server immediately stops and mentions the EULA

Open the generated eula.txt beside the JAR and change only eula=false to eula=true. Save it, verify the filename is not accidentally eula.txt.txt, and restart from the same folder.

localhost works, but friends cannot join

  • Confirm the server is still running and that the client uses the same Java Edition 1.20 build.
  • Check the operating-system firewall for an inbound Java or TCP-port rule.
  • Verify that the router forwards the exact server-port value to the host’s current private address.
  • Check for two routers performing NAT; the forwarding rule may need to exist on both, or the upstream device must be placed in bridge mode.
  • Ask the friend to use the current public IPv4 address and include :25565 when the default port is in use.

The server starts, but the client cannot join

Compare the client’s release and the server JAR filename. A client on another 1.20 point release may be refused. Also check that the address contains no spaces, that the server is not full, and that the selected port in the client matches the configured port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The world becomes slow or players experience delays

Lower view distance or the player cap, close unrelated applications, and inspect CPU, memory, disk, and network use while the problem occurs. Keep the heap within what the computer can provide; assigning more memory than the machine can comfortably spare can worsen responsiveness. There is no official fixed RAM-per-player formula, so treat any number found elsewhere as hardware- and workload-specific rather than a guarantee.

Port forwarding appears correct, but no outside connection arrives

Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT. If the router’s “public” address differs from the address visible to the wider internet, inbound forwarding may not be possible without an address or relay option from the provider. A second router, guest-network isolation, or a changing public IP can cause the same symptom. Recheck the rule after the host’s private address changes.

Home hosting versus managed hosting

Self-hosting gives you direct control of the files, Java runtime, world backups, and network policy, but you are responsible for electricity, uptime, updates, firewall rules, and protecting your public IP. Managed Minecraft hosting removes most router work and may offer web backups and monitoring, but it adds recurring cost and provider-specific limits. Compare options using the factors below rather than choosing on advertised player counts alone.

Decision factor Home self-hosting Managed hosting
Setup effort Install Java, run the JAR, edit properties, configure firewall and router. Usually an account and control-panel setup; exact steps depend on the provider.
Router and firewall access Required for internet players. Normally handled by the provider’s network.
Recurring cost No server-software charge; you provide hardware, power, and internet service. A monthly or annual hosting charge is typical; current prices vary by provider and plan.
Backups You design and verify your own backup routine. Some plans include backup tools; retention and restore limits must be checked.
Player capacity Bound by your computer and connection under your workload. Bound by the selected plan’s resources and provider policy.
Geographic latency Best for players near your home connection. Choose a data-center region that suits the group.
Java-version control You choose and verify the runtime for the exact JAR. The panel may offer selected runtimes; verify support for the 1.20 build.
Mods and plugins You control the files and update process. Support varies by provider, server type, and plan.
Privacy and security responsibility You protect the home IP, firewall, router, and accounts. The provider operates the network, while you still secure accounts and server permissions.

If the group is small, trusted, and comfortable with router administration, a home server is the most direct route. If nobody can leave a computer on, configure NAT, or maintain backups, managed hosting may be worth its recurring cost after you verify exact 1.20 support and the provider’s terms.
