Change the value of ServerName in the active Killing Floor 2 server configuration, under [Engine.GameReplicationInfo]. On Windows this is usually KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini; LinuxGSM uses a per-server directory with a LinuxServer-KFGame.ini file. Stop the server before editing, save the file, and restart it. If a hosting panel manages your instance, use its Server Name field instead of relying on a direct file edit.

The setting that controls the name players see
Killing Floor 2 reads the public server name from the ServerName key in the [Engine.GameReplicationInfo] section. That value is the long, display-oriented name shown to players in the server browser or in-game server list.
A nearby key called ShortName is separate. It is an optional short label, not a replacement for ServerName. You can leave it unchanged when you only want to change the full public name, or update both values when you want a matching short identifier.

The important detail is to edit the configuration file that the running instance actually loads. A default template, another server’s directory, or a panel-generated copy may not affect the instance you are viewing.
Windows dedicated server: exact procedure
The standard Windows setup documented by Twistor’s Steam server guide is a generate, edit, restart workflow. The first launch creates the configuration files; later launches read the values you saved.
- Launch the dedicated server once. This initial run allows Killing Floor 2 to create its server configuration tree. If you have never started this installation, the expected INI file may not exist yet.
- Stop the server cleanly. Do not edit the file while the server process is still running. A running process or a management script can rewrite settings during shutdown or startup.
- Open the active configuration file. In a normal Windows installation, browse to
KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.inibeneath the server installation directory. Use the copy belonging to the instance you intend to make public; installations with more than one server may have separate folders. - Find the correct section. Search the file for
[Engine.GameReplicationInfo]. Within that section, locate the line beginning withServerName=. - Replace only the value. Keep the key name and equals sign intact, and replace the existing text with the name you want players to see. For example:

ShortName. The Windows guide recommends replacing the default “Killing Floor 2 Server” value forServerNameand says you may do the same forShortName. Changing the short value is optional when the full display name is all you need. - Save the INI file. Confirm that your editor did not append an extra extension such as
.txt. The file must remain an INI file in the server’s activeConfigdirectory. - Restart the dedicated server. The new value is read during startup. After the restart, refresh the in-game server browser and look for the new name.
If the section or key is missing, you are probably looking at a file that has not been generated for this instance, a template rather than the active file, or the wrong server directory. Start the intended server once, stop it, and check the generated file again before creating a new section manually.

LinuxGSM server: edit the per-server configuration
LinuxGSM installations commonly keep each server in its own directory rather than using the Windows filename. A typical layout is /home/user/serverfiles/KFGame/Config/kf2server, with the generated Linux configuration file named LinuxServer-KFGame.ini. The exact parent path can differ with the Linux account and LinuxGSM layout, so treat the per-server directory as the authority.
- Identify the LinuxGSM instance. Use the directory belonging to the server you start with your LinuxGSM service script. Do not edit a second installation or a generic template.
- Stop the instance before editing. LinuxGSM documentation warns that configuration changes can be overridden on restart if you edit while the server is running. Stop the service using the normal LinuxGSM control command for your instance, then verify that the game process has ended.
- Open the generated Linux INI. In the per-server configuration directory, open
LinuxServer-KFGame.ini. For the common layout, that means checking beneath/home/user/serverfiles/KFGame/Config/kf2server. - Locate
[Engine.GameReplicationInfo]. The required key isServerName=inside that section. Change the text after the equals sign, not the section header or key spelling. - Optionally change
ShortName. Keep this as a separate decision. It is a short identifier and does not replace the long display name. - Save, then start the same LinuxGSM instance. The server must restart to load the edited value. Refresh the in-game browser after startup.
If the edit vanishes after a restart, first check whether the service was still running when you saved. Then verify that the LinuxGSM instance starts from the directory you edited. A host script can regenerate a file from startup settings, so a successful save in one directory does not prove that directory is authoritative.

Managed hosting panel: change the authoritative field
Managed providers often expose the same setting through a graphical control panel. Shockbyte’s Killing Floor 2 documentation labels the field Server Name and states that it is shown on the in-game server list.
- Stop the server from the panel. Waiting for the panel to show a stopped state prevents a running process from rewriting the configuration.
- Open the file-management area. In the provider interface, go to Files, then Config Files, and open the Killing Floor 2 server settings page. Labels can vary slightly by panel version, but the relevant page is the one containing game-server startup settings.
- Change Server Name. Enter the public name you want displayed. Use the panel field rather than editing an arbitrary copy of an INI when the provider manages startup values.
- Save the setting. Allow the panel to write or regenerate the configuration. Do not overwrite the panel’s generated file with an older local copy.
- Start the server. After startup completes, refresh the in-game server browser and verify the displayed name.
A panel can be authoritative even when it also gives you file access. If a direct INI edit disappears, make the change in the panel’s Server Name control and let the provider regenerate startup configuration.
Self-managed files versus managed panels
The setting itself is the same, but the reliable edit location and failure modes differ by deployment type.

Use the table as a decision rule: edit the INI directly when you own the server process and its files; use the panel field when the provider owns the startup configuration.
Why the name keeps reverting
A name that returns to the default after every restart usually indicates an authority or timing problem rather than a spelling problem. Work through these checks in order.

You edited a template or a different server
Installations with multiple instances can contain several PCServer-KFGame.ini or Linux configuration directories. Confirm the file path used by the process you launch. The active file should contain the [Engine.GameReplicationInfo] section and the changed ServerName value before startup.
The server was still running
Stop the process before saving. LinuxGSM specifically warns that changes made while the instance is running can be overwritten during restart. The same stop-edit-save-start sequence is the safest workflow for a self-managed Windows server.
The key is in the wrong section
The setting belongs under [Engine.GameReplicationInfo]. A ServerName line placed in another section may be ignored. Keep one active occurrence in the correct section so you can tell which value the server should load.
The key appears more than once
Search the entire active file for ServerName=. If duplicate entries exist, remove the ambiguity by keeping the intended value under [Engine.GameReplicationInfo]. Also check whether an included or generated file is being recreated by a startup tool.
A managed panel regenerated the file
When a provider exposes a Server Name field, that field may be the startup authority. Set the name there, save it, and restart from the panel. A manual edit in the file browser can be replaced the next time the panel applies its saved configuration.

The browser is showing cached information
After a successful restart, refresh the in-game server browser rather than relying on a list that was open before the server stopped. The setup guidance for Windows expects the restarted server to appear in the refreshed list.

Safe editing and recovery practices
Keep a small backup
Before changing the line, make a copy of the active INI with the server stopped. A backup lets you restore the previous configuration if an editor changes line endings, removes a section, or you later need to compare generated values.
Change the value, not the configuration structure
Preserve the section header, key spelling, equals sign, and surrounding settings. The supported change for this task is the text after ServerName=; avoid reformatting unrelated options in the same file.
Restore from the generated file when necessary
If the server stops reading the configuration after an accidental edit, stop it, restore the backup, and start again. If no backup exists, launch and stop the intended instance to obtain a fresh generated file, then reapply only the ServerName change in the correct section.

Use one naming convention across the two fields
A descriptive ServerName helps players recognize the server in the list. A compact ShortName can identify the same community or instance where a short label is displayed. Because the fields serve different purposes, changing one does not automatically change the other.
Common questions
Where exactly is ServerName in PCServer-KFGame.ini?
Search for the section header [Engine.GameReplicationInfo], then find the ServerName= line inside that section. On a standard Windows dedicated server, the file is KFGameConfigPCServer-KFGame.ini.
Do I have to change ShortName too?
No. ShortName is a separate nearby identifier. Change it only when you want a different short label in addition to the full public name.
Can I change the name without opening an INI file?
Yes, when your managed host provides a Killing Floor 2 settings page. Stop the server, open Files > Config Files, choose the Killing Floor 2 server settings page, edit Server Name, save, and start the server.
Why does my edit disappear after restarting?
