How to Make a Home More Resilient to Ember Attacks During a Bushfire

Embers can ignite a house before flames arrive. This practical Australian guide covers roof and gutter cleaning, metal screening, gap repairs, vegetation management, BAL assessments, maintenance and evacuation planning.

Embers can reach a house kilometres ahead of a bushfire front and keep arriving after the flames have passed. The most effective preparation is layered: remove combustible debris, keep roofs and gutters clean, close gaps, fit appropriate corrosion-resistant metal screens, maintain the building envelope, and make major construction choices according to the property’s Bushfire Attack Level (BAL). These steps lower the chance of ignition or ember entry; they do not make a house fireproof or guarantee that it will survive every bushfire.

Why ember attack deserves priority

Ember attack is the most common cause of building damage or destruction from bushfires, according to Australian Government guidance published through YourHome. The same guidance says that around 80% of houses lost can be attributed to ember attack, either alone or combined with other bushfire mechanisms. That figure describes reported house losses, not the probability that any individual home will burn, and the page does not show a year for the statistic.

Embers are burning pieces of bark, leaves, twigs and other material carried by wind. Queensland Fire Department warns that “Fire embers can travel kilometres during a bushfire, putting your property at risk long before flames reach your house.” They can land in a dry gutter, under a roof edge, in a wall cavity, beneath a deck, or against stored materials. A fire may then develop out of sight and spread into the building.

This is why a house that is well away from the visible fire front can still be exposed. Preparation must address both pathways: embers entering the building and embers igniting combustible material next to it.

Begin with a seasonal inspection

Walk around the property before each bushfire season and repeat the check after severe winds. Use the inspection to find small defects that are easy to overlook during normal maintenance. Take photographs of questionable joints, screens and roof details so a tradesperson can quote on a clearly defined repair.

Roof, gutters and eaves

  • Remove leaves, bark, twigs and rubbish from gutters, downpipes, box gutters and roof valleys.
  • Check the roof covering for cracked, missing or loose tiles, damaged sheets and failed seals.
  • Inspect ridge caps, roof edges, eaves, flashing and penetrations for gaps through which embers could enter.
  • Look for openings around chimneys, skylights, evaporative-cooler ducts, antennas, solar equipment and other services that pass through the roof.
  • Check any gutter guard for damage, corrosion or accumulated debris. A guard is not a substitute for cleaning and inspection.
  • From the ground, check that downpipes discharge properly and that water cannot back up into the roof space during a storm.

Walls, doors and windows

  • Test that external doors and windows close firmly and that their seals remain continuous.
  • Inspect flyscreens for tears, loose edges, damaged frames and poor fits.
  • Look for cracks or openings in cladding, around window and door frames, at service penetrations and beneath eaves.
  • Check vents, weepholes and other wall openings for damaged or missing covers.
  • Examine the base of the building and any underfloor area for gaps, leaf litter and stored combustible items.
  • Open and close each protected window or door to confirm that a screen, shutter or seal does not prevent normal escape and operation.

Services and equipment

Confirm that water supplies, hoses, pumps and other equipment are serviceable if the household intends to defend the property. Home defence is not a substitute for an evacuation decision: monitor official warnings and follow the household bushfire plan.

What to do after a windy day

Wind can deposit fresh leaves in a gutter, blow debris beneath a deck and loosen a screen or flashing that appeared sound during the pre-season check. After a severe wind event, inspect the roof perimeter, gutters, vents, weepholes, decks and external storage again. If smoke or fire is nearby, do not climb onto a roof or enter a hazardous area; follow fire-service directions and leave when advised.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reduce the chance of embers entering

Closing likely entry points is a building-maintenance task first. Seal or repair gaps around doors, windows, cladding, eaves and roof penetrations, while preserving required drainage and ventilation.

Use suitable metal screening

Australian guidance commonly describes corrosion-resistant aluminium, bronze or steel flyscreen material for relevant openings. The guidance reviewed describes gaps or apertures under 2 mm; Country Fire Authority (CFA) guidance specifies a maximum 2 mm aperture for the screens it addresses. Treat that number as an application-specific requirement, not a universal instruction for every opening or building element.

Queensland Fire Department recommends steel wire mesh screens on windows, doors, vents and weepholes. NSW Government guidance similarly recommends fine metal mesh screens on windows and doors. Plastic or fibreglass flyscreen is not the metal screening described in those recommendations. Mesh must be firmly retained in a frame, and the frame, fixings and surrounding opening also need to remain serviceable.

Opening or location What to check Important qualification
Windows and doors Fine, corrosion-resistant metal mesh; tight frames; undamaged seals; doors and windows that close fully Screen material and aperture must suit the opening and the property’s BAL requirements.
Vents and weepholes Metal mesh or a compliant ember-resistant cover that does not detach or clog Do not block drainage or required ventilation; confirm the appropriate construction detail.
Eaves, roof edges and penetrations Gaps, failed seals and loose flashing repaired; mesh installed where the design requires it Roof details are part of the building system and may require a qualified installer.
Underfloor areas Openings protected where required; leaves and stored combustibles removed Enclosure, ventilation and drainage changes should be checked against the relevant BAL and building rules.

When comparing mesh, record the wire material, stated aperture, frame material, corrosion resistance, fixing method and the dimensions of the opening. A screen that is fine enough but badly retained can still lift in wind or leave a gap at a corner. A robust frame is also easier to remove for cleaning and inspection.

Do not assume that a generic marketplace screen satisfies AS 3959:2018, a local building rule or a particular BAL. Confirm the product’s material, aperture, corrosion resistance, fixing method and intended application before installation. Where the opening is part of a required fire-resisting or ventilation detail, use a suitably qualified installer rather than adapting a household flyscreen kit.

Keep gutters, roofs and the area around the house free of fuel

Even a well-screened house can be threatened when embers ignite material outside it. Clear combustible debris from the roof and gutters immediately rather than waiting for the annual inspection.

Manage vegetation and stored materials

  • Remove accumulated leaves, bark and fallen branches from around walls, decks, stairs and external air-conditioning units.
  • Keep firewood, gas cylinders, building materials, furniture and other combustible storage away from the building where practicable.
  • Avoid building up combustible mulch against walls or beneath windows.
  • Prune or manage vegetation so that fallen material does not collect against the house and access for inspection is maintained.
  • Keep decks, verandas, subfloor spaces and roof valleys free from dry debris.
  • Check narrow ledges, window sills, fence junctions and the space beneath outdoor stairs, where leaves can accumulate unnoticed.

Metal gutter guards can reduce the amount of debris entering a gutter, but they do not eliminate ember exposure. Fine material can still settle on or beneath a guard, and the roof and guard still need inspection and cleaning. Choose a guard that does not create a new entry route or interfere with drainage.

Understand BAL before undertaking major work

Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) is a site-specific assessment used to determine construction requirements. It reflects factors including the type and amount of vegetation, the slope and the distance between the building and vegetation. The result guides decisions about materials and details such as windows, doors, roofs, vents, walls and subfloor protection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to obtain an assessment

Consult a suitably qualified bushfire practitioner and the relevant local authority before replacing windows, changing a roof system, enclosing an underfloor area, adding shutters, rebuilding after damage or undertaking another major retrofit. A practitioner can relate the proposed work to the site’s BAL and to the applicable building requirements. Do not infer a BAL from a neighbour’s property: vegetation, slope, separation distance and building position can differ substantially.

Use AS 3959:2018 in context

Official Australian guidance references AS 3959:2018 for construction in bushfire-prone areas. The standard itself was not reviewed here, and requirements can also depend on jurisdiction, building element and the assessed BAL. Treat the standard reference as a prompt to obtain the correct professional and regulatory advice, not as permission to copy one detail across every project.

Questions to ask before approving work

  • Which BAL applies to this site and to the proposed work?
  • Does the component address ember entry, radiant heat, direct flame contact or nearby fuel?
  • What material, aperture, frame and fixing specifications are required?
  • Will the change preserve drainage, ventilation, moisture management and safe operation?
  • Who will install it, and what evidence will show that the installation matches the required detail?
  • Does the quote identify preparation, removal of old components, sealing and final inspection separately?

A practical preparation sequence

  1. Set a date before fire season. Put a whole-property inspection on the calendar and include the roof, gutters, eaves, walls, openings, decks and underfloor spaces.
  2. Clear combustible debris. Clean gutters and roof valleys, remove leaf litter from around the building, and relocate combustible storage.
  3. Repair the envelope. Replace damaged roof materials, restore door and window seals, repair cladding gaps and secure loose flashing or vents.
  4. Inspect screens. Replace torn or poorly fitted screens and verify that the material and aperture are appropriate for the opening and BAL.
  5. Check external fuel paths. Look beneath decks, around stairs, near walls and around service equipment for dry vegetation or stored items that could ignite.
  6. Review water and equipment. If the household may defend the property, test pumps, hoses and water access, without treating this as a reason to delay evacuation.
  7. Recheck after wind. Strong winds can deposit new leaves and branches and can loosen screens, roof components or seals.
  8. Confirm the emergency plan. Follow official warnings, know the trigger for leaving and ensure every household member understands the plan.

Compare a retrofit by the hazard it addresses

No single product is automatically the best choice. Compare an option against the specific pathway it is intended to interrupt, its compliance requirements and its maintenance burden.

Measure Primary pathway addressed Checks before choosing Ongoing attention
Roof and gutter cleaning Ember ignition of debris Safe access and complete removal from valleys, gutters and downpipes Repeat before season and after windy conditions
Corrosion-resistant metal ember mesh Ember entry through windows, doors, vents or weepholes Material, maximum aperture, frame, corrosion resistance, fixing and BAL suitability Inspect for tears, corrosion, blocked ventilation and loose edges
Gap and seal repairs Ember entry through the envelope Roof, eaves, cladding, service penetrations and door/window interfaces Recheck after building movement, weather or maintenance work
Metal gutter guard Debris accumulation in gutters Material, fit, drainage and whether it can be cleaned Lift or inspect as appropriate; remove debris that collects on top or below
Major component replacement Ember entry, radiant heat or other BAL exposure Site BAL, local rules, component certification and qualified installation Maintain seals, screens, shutters and surrounding construction

There is no controlled, comparable percentage reduction in risk or cost-effectiveness figure for these measures in the government and fire-service guidance cited here. Ask for itemised local quotes and for the installer to identify the opening, BAL assumption, materials and maintenance requirements. Be wary of a seller who promises a guaranteed survival rate or treats a generic screen or guard as compliant without identifying the relevant opening, BAL and standard.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

“The fire front is far away, so the house is safe.”

Embers can arrive well ahead of flames and continue afterward. Keep monitoring conditions and inspect for smouldering debris if it is safe to do so.

“A gutter guard means the gutters no longer matter.”

Guards can collect fine debris and can themselves become contaminated. Continue cleaning and inspecting the roof drainage system.

“Any flyscreen will stop embers.”

Recommendations in the cited guidance concern corrosion-resistant metal mesh and, for the CFA guidance reviewed, apertures no greater than 2 mm. Plastic or fibreglass mesh is not interchangeable with that specification.

“A neighbour’s BAL or building detail will work here.”

BAL is site-specific. A different slope, vegetation type, separation distance or building position can change the requirements.

“Sealing every opening is safest.”

Blocking a required vent or drainage path can create moisture, pressure or service problems. Use an ember-resistant detail that preserves the building’s necessary ventilation and drainage.

“Meeting a standard guarantees survival.”

Standards and maintenance lower risk but cannot remove the uncertainty of bushfire behaviour. Exposure, nearby fuels, wind, construction details and the condition of the building at the time all matter.

Plan for evacuation as well as property preparation

House preparation supports, but does not replace, a bushfire plan. Decide in advance when the household will leave, where it will go and how pets, medicines, documents and transport will be handled. Follow official emergency warnings and local fire-service instructions. If conditions become dangerous, personal safety takes priority over attempting to defend a building.

What resilience can—and cannot—mean

A resilient home is one with fewer ember entry routes, fewer combustible deposits and construction details matched to its BAL. The practical goal is to reduce the number of ways a small ember can start a hidden fire and to make inspection and maintenance routine. No screen, gutter guard or construction standard can guarantee survival in an unpredictable bushfire.

Maintenance calendar for ongoing readiness

Timing 重点 tasks Reason
Before fire season Complete the whole-property walk-through; clean roof drainage; repair screens, seals, tiles, flashing and vents; move stored combustibles. Find defects and accumulated fuel before the period of greatest exposure.
After strong winds Remove newly deposited leaves and branches; check screens, gutter guards, roof edges and service penetrations. Wind can create a fresh ember path or damage a previously sound detail.
During the season Keep access clear for inspection; watch official warnings; do not allow mulch, firewood or rubbish to build up against the building. Conditions and fuel loads can change quickly.
After maintenance or renovation Recheck seals, penetrations, ventilation and drainage; retain product and installation information. Trades work can unintentionally leave gaps or alter a BAL-relevant detail.

Keep a written list of repairs and the date each screen, seal, roof detail and gutter was checked. This does not certify compliance, but it helps the household spot recurring defects and explain the building’s history to a qualified practitioner.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far can bushfire embers travel?

Queensland Fire Department says embers can travel kilometres, so a property can be exposed long before the flame front arrives and after it passes. Distance from visible flames is not a reason to skip preparation or warnings.

What mesh should I use to keep embers out?

The guidance cited recommends corrosion-resistant metal mesh, including aluminium, bronze or steel, for relevant openings. Queensland guidance specifies steel wire mesh for windows, doors, vents and weepholes, while CFA guidance describes a maximum 2 mm aperture for the screens it addresses. Confirm the exact material, aperture, frame and fixing against the opening and the site’s BAL.

Is a 2 mm aperture requirement universal?

No. The 2 mm figure comes from the CFA guidance for the screens it describes. Requirements vary by building element, jurisdiction and BAL, so do not apply that number automatically to every vent, roof detail or other opening.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a gutter guard stop ember attack?

No. A metal guard may reduce debris entering a gutter, but fine material can collect on or below it and embers can ignite other roof or wall debris. Continue cleaning and inspecting gutters, valleys, downpipes and guards.

Do I need a BAL assessment for replacing windows or enclosing a subfloor?

Obtain advice before major work such as replacing windows, changing a roof system, enclosing an underfloor area or adding shutters. BAL is site-specific and depends on vegetation, slope and distance from vegetation; a suitably qualified bushfire practitioner can relate the work to the applicable requirements.

Can I use plastic or fibreglass flyscreen?

Those materials are not the corrosion-resistant metal screening described in the cited bushfire guidance. Use the material and aperture specified for the particular opening and BAL, with a frame and fixings that remain secure.

Does complying with AS 3959:2018 guarantee that a home will survive?

No. Standards and preparation reduce risk but cannot guarantee survival. Bushfire intensity, wind, exposure, nearby fuels, maintenance and construction details all affect the outcome.

Should I stay to defend a prepared house?

Preparation is not a substitute for evacuation. Follow official warnings and the household plan, decide departure triggers in advance and leave when conditions or authorities indicate. Personal safety takes priority over protecting the building.

The Bottom Line

Prepare for ember attack as a continuing maintenance task: clear roof and gutter debris, remove nearby fuels, repair gaps and seals, use appropriate corrosion-resistant metal screening, and match major work to a site-specific BAL assessment. These layers reduce risk, but no product or standard makes a home fireproof, so keep evacuation plans and official warnings central.
