Can you create Grok Imagine videos for free?
That depends on the access currently available to your signed-in Grok account. xAI’s Grok Imagine page describes image and video generation, but the official information reviewed does not confirm an unconditional free tier, a quota, who is eligible, or availability in every region. Check the current app or web experience before planning around free generation.

Choose how to start the video
Grok’s video workflow supports two useful starting points: describe a scene from scratch, or provide a still image and describe how it should move. The first is text-to-video; the second is image-to-video. Pick the mode that fits the material you already have.

- Image-to-video: Supply a still image when you want the clip to begin from that image, then describe the motion or change.
For the API’s grok-imagine-video-1.5 model, xAI documents clips from 1 to 15 seconds and output resolutions of 480p, 720p, or 1080p for text-to-video and image-to-video. Reference-to-video is capped at 720p. These are API specifications; the consumer app may offer different controls. The API also supports aspect-ratio choices, including 16:9 and 9:16, but app controls may differ.
Generate and save a clip
- Check access: Open Grok Imagine in the current Grok app or web experience and confirm whether video generation is available to your account and what limits apply.
- Choose an input mode: Start with a text prompt or a still image and motion prompt. In the API, the request can include a prompt and, for image-to-video, an input image.
- Set the framing and length: Match landscape, portrait, or square framing to the intended destination. For API requests, choose from supported settings; do not assume the same settings appear in the app.
- Generate and review: If using the API, submit the request and poll its request ID until the result is ready. Inspect the clip for unwanted motion or visual errors before enhancing it.
- Save the result promptly: xAI says API-generated video URLs are temporary. Download the clip or begin processing it soon after it becomes available if you need a durable copy.
Upscale the clip separately with Video2X
Video2X is an independent open-source project for machine-learning video super-resolution and frame interpolation. It is not a Grok feature or a one-click integration. Its project documentation describes local installation options and a free Google Colab route; which is practical depends on your device, setup, and available Colab resources. Colab sessions have constraints, and Video2X cautions against excessive repeated sessions.

- Keep a downloaded copy of the original clip so you can compare results or start over.
- Use Video2X’s project instructions to choose a local installation or its documented Colab workflow. Follow the current project setup rather than assuming a particular interface or model option.
- Process the video with the project’s available super-resolution workflow. Processing time and feasibility depend on the hardware or hosted resources available to you.
- Watch the output at the size where you intend to publish it. Compare it with the original for invented textures, softened edges, flicker, or other artifacts before replacing your source file.
Upscaling increases pixel dimensions; it cannot reliably recover detail that was never present in the generated clip. It may synthesize apparent detail, so a larger output is not automatically a more accurate one.

xAI’s video-editing endpoint changes an existing clip in response to a prompt. It retains the source video’s duration and aspect ratio, does not accept custom duration, aspect ratio, or resolution settings, and caps edited output at 720p. Use editing when you want a content change; it is not xAI’s documented route for increasing resolution. For resolution enhancement, use a separate super-resolution tool such as Video2X.

What the free workflow does—and does not—cover
- Video creation: Consumer free access is not established for every account; check the current offer in Grok.
- Upscaling: Video2X documents a free Colab option, but setup, processing resources, and session limits apply.
- Higher resolution: The API can generate up to 1080p in the specified text-to-video and image-to-video modes, so upscaling may not be necessary for every project. The app’s settings may differ.
- Visual quality: Neither generating at a larger resolution nor upscaling guarantees accurate fine detail. Review the actual clip at its intended playback size.
